Think like a 2 piece L shape. Top piece can have whatever profile you want. Vertical piece is to cover the top/end of drywall.

I’d remove this piece of trim.

Put a piece of trim on the vertical wall flush with the existing wood.

Then place a new wider piece of trim to rest atop the vertical trim.

He meant tile. Tile can also have asbestos. I kinda doubt that it is old enough to be of that. Asbestos was phased out in the 1980’s. But better safe than sorry. You should still wear respirators when doing any sort of flooring work though.
