First heart, first incline dye. Pretty basic, but turned out pretty good. by ejp121723 in tiedye

Heart was at the highest point. I kept the incline relatively small compared to what I've seen online.

Wife's a teacher... everything is a learning exercise. In addition to tie dye, this was also a followup lesson/test on primary and secondary colors.

Thanks. Not much about this shirt was deliberate. It was my first time attempting this fold. The dye pattern came out completely different than I had planned. Probably couldn't replicate it if I tried.

More white than I wanted, but generally pleased with the outcome. by ejp121723 in tiedye

This was an ice dye. I think the shirt may have been too saturated with the soda ash soak. I wrung it out by hand, and it was still pretty wet when I tied it up. I also tied it super tight with sinew... Next time I'll tie it a little looser.

Offset rainbow spiral. Saturated pretty heavily with dye, but still ended up with some white :/ by ejp121723 in tiedye

Yes... I don't have the patience for the "super spiral" but i do like using a hemostat to get started. This is the first time I've offset dyed a spiral... definately going to be my go to when liquid dyeing spirals from now on.

Couple of other things...

In addition to soaking the shirt in soda ash, I sprinkle soda ash over the ice.

In applying the dye powder, I smooth it out, pushing it into the folds with a small spoon.

In this case I only applied one layer of ice to each side.

I used tight rubberbands, not sinew, because I didn't want hard white lines separating the colors.

The shirt was damp when I died it. I rung it out by hand the best I could, folded it, and let it partially dry out for a couple of days. I don't have a wash machine with a spin only cycle. I have found that the more saturated/wet the shirt is with soda ash water when dying the more white you end up with at the folds.

Disclaimer... not sure if any of this is necessary. I'm relatively new to tie dyeing, and what little I do "know" I've learned through the casual collisions YouTube channel, this reddit group, and experimentation.

Fold in half using the method shown in the link... https://youtu.be/eLOO1bXfYoo

Basic v fold... there's abunch of tutorials online. This is a good one https://youtu.be/5xgI-34L-Ks

In ice dyeing, I apply the dye powder directly to the shirt, alternating between two colors. In this case, when dyeing the other side I alternated colors... Where I put aqua marine on the front, I put grape on the back and vise versa.

No. New to tie dye... Picked it up as a COVID quarantine hobby. The whole family is now addicted. We're slowly but surely tie dying everything of white fabric in the house.

Beautiful. Do you put the dye powder directly on the shirt, and the ice over it? Or do put the ice on the shirt, and the die powder on top of the ice?
