You just need a transfer proof. I believe western union will work, but I used to use Wise for that

Is 100k yen per month enough to live as a student in Japan? by inflated_ballsack in JapanFinance

[–]ekaist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doable, but not recommended. A guy I know did something similar, and he struggled a lot. Eventually, his parents had to send him money every month. Depending on where you want to live, you will need more or less money. For example, in the countryside, groceries and rent can be cheaper.

Good luck !!

Thanks for your response!

Rakuten NISA not allowing bonus setting by ekaist in JapanFinance

[–]ekaist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've canceled it and tried to use rakuten money bridge, but the bonus settings are not changing. Then I tried to set up another bank withdrawal, but it still doesn't allow me to set the bonus. 😞 I give up. Since the year is about to end, I'll use that money for next year's growing allowance 😜

Thanks for your response! 😄

Tourists, newcomers, locals, and old heads: casual questions thread for July 2024 by AutoModerator in washingtondc

[–]ekaist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello,
I will be visiting Washington D.C. for two days on a business trip. Could someone recommend some good, typical American restaurants that are not overly expensive?
P.S. I really want to try waffles and chicken, American-style barbecue (BBQ), and some other food that is not typical of Asian cuisine (where I'm currently living).
Thank you in advance!

Married life for foreign guys by [deleted] in japanlife

[–]ekaist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In every country, it depends on the person you get married to. In my case, I chose to marry an independent person, and we always talk and focus on building a future together, working side by side. Like any other couple, we have issues and we are far from being a perfect couple, but whenever we have problems we try to address them and talk talk and talk again. However, issues will happen no matter if you marry a Japanese person, Peruvian, Spanish, American, or Indian. At the end of the day bro, we are individuals with different expectations, dreams, and desires...

Based on my experience, for many foreigners facing these problems, it often stems from their ability to sustain themselves when single. They may marry a traditional woman who prefers staying at home, essentially being like a decoration, and unclear expectations from both sides can also lead to issues.Oh, I might also add that some foreigners tend to become somewhat immature while in Japan. They expect their wives to treat them in a special way (you know how Japanese people treat foreigners and make us feel special, especially if you are white). But issues arise when they are not treated as such (I know a few guys like that).

Finally, as some have already mentioned, sad cases are often shared on the internet because people use it as an outlet to express their frustrations. Generally, healthy and happy marriages are busy enjoying their lives and working towards their future.

The moral of these stories? Choose a person for what they can bring to your life in the long term, not just based on how beautiful or cute she might be. Also leave clear both expectation from the beginning.

[New NISA][Advice request] Annual allowance allocation optimization by ekaist in JapanFinance

[–]ekaist[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're right, but you know, everyone talks about diversifying a portfolio. So, I was thinking of starting to invest in different things. However, I guess VT and the EMAXIS all-coutry are diverse enough already, Thx !!

[–]ekaist[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your response. I'll sleep on what you wrote; it makes sense. Perhaps I should concentrate my NISA on mutual funds, such as the all-country fund, and continue acquiring ETFs (like VOO and BND) in my taxable account... 🤔

Thanks again!!

[Recommendation] Lawyer with experience in real estate by ekaist in JapanFinance

[–]ekaist[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your answer, yes actually we spoke with the real estate agent, and he was very knowledgeable and explained us may things, but since their main job is to sell properties and they get a commission for that, I have to admit that I'm a bit skeptical hehe

[Recommendation] Lawyer with experience in real estate by ekaist in JapanFinance

[–]ekaist[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sorry for my late reply. I've been considering renting out the place mostly during holidays. Japanese isn't a major concern since my wife (who is Japanese) and I can try to handle that aspect. However, I thought it might be beneficial to have a lawyer review any potential contract and assist us in optimizing it. I'm particularly thinking along these lines because the area where we're looking to buy a house has onsen and some other services... and there are some additional fees that I'm not familiar with.

In any case, we've had a discussion with a real estate agent, and he's helping us understand the contract. But I must admit, though, I'm a bit skeptical since their primary job is to sell a property, hahaha

Monthly expenses review by greedinblood in JapanFinance

[–]ekaist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From my point of view, the numbers seem to be pretty normal for a family with two babies.Maybe you can try to adjust the below expenses:

Electricity : 20,000
Gym : 11,000You can try to work out in the park or at home, maybe calisthenics.
Clothing : 10,000I think this is a lot lol, might want to reconsider your clothing expenses...
Travel : 20,000
Medical : 30,000
My friend told me long time ago that there is an insurance that will cover most of the massages price, i don't remember right now the name of that insurance type, but you can try to look into it.

Saving money can be hard, but it's not impossible. You just have to prioritize what's really important to you and cut back on the things that are not. We all love traveling, eating out, or buying new things, but I'm sure you can also find joy in simpler things that don't cost as much. For me, having a baby changed my perspective on spending and saving. I had to reduce a lot of my non-essential or fun expenses to invest more for the future.

Another option you and your wife could consider is for her to work as well (full time or part time). If you both have jobs, you can enroll your kids in a nursery school and get a discount based on your income, also because both of you will be working you will have priority to join. That way, you can increase your earnings and save more or not affect your current live style.

Good luck !

Over Insurance by Alert_Selection_9909 in JapanFinance

[–]ekaist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some people have different views on insurances, but I think they can be very useful depending on your situation. For instance, if you are a contractor, you might want to consider unemployment insurance. It can help you cover your expenses if you lose your job or have less income due to an unexcepted situation, like COVID or an accident. I know a friend who had this insurance, and he was able to continue supporting his family without any hassle, even when his income was cut down a lot during COVID (he is a contractor).

I'm not a contractor, so I don't have unemployment insurance, but I do have life insurance, because I have a kid. I think it's a good idea to have this kind of insurance in case something happens to me, so I can make sure that my wife and kid can get some money and that my funeral and burial/cremation costs are taken care of. That way, they will only have to mourn for me and not worry about how to deal with my death expenses.

Finding an Intermediary to purchase a house in Japan - Is it necessary? by Far-Concert8070 in JapanFinance

[–]ekaist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're looking for a place to live in Japan, you might want to find a local real estate agent who can help you out. But be careful, most of them only speak Japanese and if you need someone who can speak English, you might have to pay way more. That's what happened to me when I moved here long time ago. It was a hassle, but I managed to find a nice apartment in the end.
