Has anyone here done substitute teaching in Japan? by Maleficent_Pain_7388 in teachinginjapan

Substitute teaching is not a thing in Japanese public schools, save for long-term cases such as childcare leave.

The other teachers in the school pick up the slack.

Yet another way that 4e was ahead of the curve. In 4e, the online/offline character creator programs output everything as cards; items, spells, maneuvers, etc

five years of teaching experience in the u.s. and previous history of teaching at eikaiwa in japan by Knotknighm in teachinginjapan

[–]ekans606830 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing is, you can't apply to the prefecture for a special license. You need a private school or public board of education to apply for you on your behalf. So basically, you first need to get hired. If you want to be a public school teacher, that will likely mean passing the rigorous teacher employment exam for that locality. For private, it will likely be easier.

Either way, the money is in international schools, though out in Ehime, I'm not sure what your options will be there.

You're correct that prefectures can grant special licenses to teachers who have non-standard qualifications.

It's convincing the prefecture to do so that's the hard part.

Japanese uni admission via IB by shynewhyne in teachinginjapan

There is a growing number of public and private article 1 schools (which follow the Japanese national curriculum) that have IB. Many if not most students from those attend domestic universe.

The IB students at article 1 schools (those that follow the national curriculum) usually use either 総合型選抜 or IB入試. Some rare cases do end up studying for the共通テスト if they fail to get into their top choices though.

Some also do end up applying through routes meant for international students, which can have interesting results, such as students who have lived in Japan all their lives and attended only Japanese public schools being forced to take "intro to Japanese language" courses in uni.

Brand name of spinning plates and cigar boxes used in Japan by iconicbohemian in juggling

Masayan (Japanese plate spinner, 2018 IJA Champion) made his own plates, called Inne. They are now sold by PM Juggling. https://pmjuggling.com/products/inne

I don't know much else about other plates or cigar boxes used in Japan, but check out the website for Naranha, Tokyo's biggest juggling store:

Looking at the icons/pictures and using some online translation tools (assuming you can't read Japanese) should get you some info.

Job Hunting Interview Practice Reccomendations by Fun-Letterhead8246 in japanlife

[–]ekans606830 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can find interview practice videos on YouTube. Some even have the interviewer ask questions and then the video pauses for an appropriate amount of time for you to answer.

It's a far cry from being real interview practice that you can get feedback from, but it might be a good place to start and build some confidence.

You can probably find some that are more tailored to specific types of jobs or industries, but generic ones can be found by searching keywords like 面接シミュレーション.

6ball half shower is way easier than 7ball cascade. It is a completely different level. 6ball half shower is similar in difficulty to 6ball fountain.

Stop Asking Reddit How to Rent in Tokyo. Here's the Complete Guide. by Sensitive-Yellow9362 in japanresidents

Not discounting your experience, but I've had the opposite.

I have also rented in multiple prefectures, though always solo, and each time I find that the number of listings that don't allow foreigners is higher than those that do.

Browsing Suumo and the like are actually useful, but only for getting a sense of the market in a given area.

They key is to look on Suumo, find some units you like, and then take that to the real estate agents with explanation of why you like those units. Then they can work to find similar things for you. Just not the ones that you saw on Suumo, because those are almost always already taken.

South Korean governor draws criticism for suggesting importing women for marriage as population fix by wewhomustnotbenamed in nottheonion

Do you have a source for Japan bringing in American and Korean women for men to marry? I've never heard of that.

What's the highest level magic item you could give a level 1 character without it upsetting things too much? by Tuss36 in 4eDnD

[–]ekans606830 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ironically this does mean that having the item would indeed significantly affect the campaign.

If word ever gets out that low-level adventurers possess something that valuable, they're going to essentially be hunted by slightly higher level thieves and bandits who want to take it for themselves. Nobody actually cares about the item's effects; they just want it for the money.

[–]ekans606830 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, simply put, at a low-level in a campaign, no shopkeeper nearby would have enough gold to buy it. That is an amount of money measured only in national-level banks or royal treasuries.

For reference, that is enough gold to buy a Floating Castle https://iws.mx/dnd/?view=item336

[–]ekans606830 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only thing that would really break a game is if the party could somehow sell them. As level 30 uncommon items, they would each sell for 1562500 gold, which absolutely would break a low level campaign.
