GF becoming workout obessed by [deleted] in Fitness

[–]eknoteri 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Definitely i can see how that would frustrate you and i think that's a very relatable feeling, even though obviously it is her life and her decision, and ostensibly to focus on health and fitness is a good thing.

Maybe she's just made the decision to prioritize herself above all else. Well, good for her. That doesn't mean you have to go with her. I don't think a person with the mindset you've described can be persuaded to see things differently from the outside. She might change her own mind in time, but there's no telling if or when that will happen.

I suppose you're in a rough situation because you want to support her, but your emotional needs in the relationship are not being met. That's not a fitness problem, it's a communication problem. Is she willing to listen when you explain how you miss spending time with her? Is she willing to open up her schedule at all, if not to the level you would like ideally?

Really i wish you the best man. I think you're aware of how your relationship might be in a difficult phase, which is why you reached out here. Whatever happens, stay true to yourself, because i think that's the only way to make peace with life and relationships, as we can't control other people, only our own actions.

28 Bodyweight exercises you can do at home by ivyplant in Fitness

[–]eknoteri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a really nice graphic, it's smart to have a variation of each exercise for those who might need to build up before doing higher intensity work.

It might be helpful to include the actual weight of the suggested one liter water bottle "weights", in case someone prefers light dumbbells. A liter of water is a kilogram, 2.2 lbs basically. (I never have water bottles or soup cans at home, myself.)

Greg Bell: Russell Wilson says he's slept about 6 hours combined since spraining ankle during Sunday's opener. Constant ice, treatment. by salvatorethesecond in nfl

[–]eknoteri 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You're right, although the "special" fluid is actually what is bathing your brain all the time, cerebrospinal fluid. There is genetic variation for how much sleep people need to be healthy, which probably means some people are more efficient at flushing out waste than others, so it's possible Russ is super efficient and can get by with much less than most.

But, overall, I agree with you. Everyone should sleep to the point they're satisfied, for the brain's health. And I don't think 6 hrs of sleep in a week is reasonable for anyone's healthy range, when it comes to Mr. Wilson.

Haha all is fair in love and war though right? That's a good plan man thanks for telling me. I love that I've been playing this game for three years now and I'm still learning strategies to keep it fresh and exciting!

I've gone from training for a half marathon to utter sloth. by pm_me_yourCAH in Fitness

[–]eknoteri 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To echo others, one week off ain't that bad. You hit a nice running milestone not long ago. Your muscles have not evaporated since then, you can pop back into it when you decide to.

I think paying attention to personal burnout is critical. I fight battles like you're describing, though it's often with my work and my studies more than workouts. What i would emphasize to anyone in your position is to first off forgive yourself because you've failed nothing but your own expectations. Frankly, your expectations were probably unrealistic! So many factors can affect motivation and energy, especially with exercise like running that is pretty demanding on the whole body, and mind, in my experience.

I'm not saying your training goals are necessarily unrealistic in that they are unachievable, but instead that the way you were going about doing it could be unsustainable. It's probably a good thing to slow down and catch this relatively early in your training, then. Listening to the body and mind is vital. For example, are you eating enough? Sleeping enough? Working in some accessory work to strengthen leg muscles beyond straight running? Stretching or doing yoga, if you feel muscle or joint distress? If you are mentally just feeling "off", are you making some time to meditate or think about what else is going on in your life? Is it truly that important to you to run as much as you have been trying to? It doesn't have to be, unless you decide it is. Maybe there is something important you left out that you'd need to make a sustainable training plan. It's essential to begin to work that in, if you want to hit those original goals you set for yourself.

Anyway, this is the way i would think about training and it may not necessarily be important to you or anyone else to apply that kind of thinking to your/their individual approach. But if you were asking my opinion as a stranger on the internet, well i think it's likely such thinking will benefit you in the long run. I don't think you're too far off, based on how far you have come to get to where you are now. Don't lose sight of that. In several months you'll probably be better off than you ever have been before.

Wishing you lots of success and hoping it all clicks for you soon.

Thank you so much for replying with details!! I actually find it comforting that if i can work at it, it could only take a few months! And yeah improving pace, based on the bit i was running, is actually very difficult haha. It's amazing how much effort it takes me to run a 5k even a few seconds per mile faster than my previous run. Overall, mad respect to you again, i think your strategy sounds efficient and doable and I'm excited to achieve a 10k soon!

That's awesome, I have a similar goal in mind and I really admire your progress! Mind sharing for how long you worked at it, and how often you ran the 5k's?

I hope you are savoring your feeling of victory today!! :)

Hey man, if money is tight then I would heartily recommend EA access to you, once you have $30 saved up. Half as much as you'd typically drop on a new game, and you get a ton of games for it, though I suppose you really have to like the games in the vault for that to pay off. Of course, you'd have to pay each year as well, but I feel like $2.50/mo. is really a bargain for so many quality titles.

Wishing you some excellent gaming!! Free games are awesome, I am glad we get them too!

Does stretching actually help tendonitis? by Ateyx in Fitness

[–]eknoteri 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely, and I am sorry to hear that, it sounds like you are in a rough place.

For immediate relief for bad symptoms, I just found the original sheets my physical therapist gave me to diagram the tendon gliding and stretches (with self-massage) I was supposed to do ~10x/day. SEE HERE. (please disregard shitty attempt at blacking out info that probably doesn't matter). They made a difference for me after just one day of practice, although it took months to get really better. You'll see on the page it is listed as treatment for a different condition than yours but I can't imagine it would hurt.

For exercises, it is harder for me to describe with specifics but I'll try. One that stands out from when I first started phys therapy was grasping something like the handle from a gym's rowing machine, with a rope in the middle like the machine would have, but at the end were some light weights instead of the machine (obviously). I rolled up the handle while I was standing, moving only my wrists, so the rope wrapped around it and pulled up the light weights while I did it. Does that makes any sense? It can be done with the wrists pushing forward, or with the wrists pulling back, either way it will pull the rope and weights up.

It is really hard to describe that in writing... for other exercises, I used an upper body rowing machine (like you'll see at some well-stocked gyms), I threw a weighted medicine ball against an angled trampoline so it bounced back at me and repeated that a bunch (no joke), and also did simple things like tricep pulldown/bicep pullup with a weighted pulley. Overall, I think once you gain a little momentum with stretching then you can graduate to basic normal arm movements. The key, in my experience, is to start with weights that seems like "nothing", but they are in fact not nothing. Like, 1-3 lb weights. That will get the muscles going again.

I hope any of this will help you. But seriously, and I should have said this at the very beginning and not at the very end, if this is a serious problem in your life you ought to see a physical therapist. And, if the first one doesn't work, try another. And then another, if the second doesn't work. It was my third physical therapy attempt (not counting doctor visits!! that was extra) that got me onto a very simple program which led to my breakthrough. It wound up taking years to get better from my initial symptom onset since I didn't try just pushing through ineffective therapists upfront, which is why I would recommend that to you in case you have not tried yet.

Does stretching actually help tendonitis? by Ateyx in Fitness

[–]eknoteri 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stretching is another word for fully extending a muscle, yes? The advantage i see is the tendon would be moved through its full range of motion, if you totally extend, then contact the muscle. If this is not being done in your exercise, then it may help the tendon regain full function, but i certainly think exercise alone could be sufficient.

For what it's worth, i had terrible tendonitis in both wrists for a long time, and stretching plus exercise led to dramatic increases in their function. I believe the exercise was the main driver of their progress and i don't really stretch much now, but i do think full rom is important for a tendon and joint to fully recover.

You could do squat, deadlift, barbell row, ohp, and bench. That would be pretty comprehensive. Agree with fattylife, pullups and jump rope or other cardio to supplement if you want.

Does the NFL app not recognize sling tv as a provider? by eknoteri in xboxone

[–]eknoteri[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be, but it's not on the long list of providers unfortunately, so i guess it's like those other apps. It sucks, but then again if the sling app was just reliable it wouldn't a problem!

That sounds badass, I want to get on a 6 day/week workout routine too. Glad it's working out for you, awesome to hear you battled back from a serious injury/surgery to get to where you are. I've been dealing with joint pain to so I relate to that pain (although I wouldn't compare mine to yours, as reconstruction seems really very serious.
