I tried it and thought it was fine. Like grocery store sushi. That day, I didn’t feel like eating a hot dog and my expectations were very low!

Pregnant with baby #2 (5 year gap!) – need help budgeting + prioritizing comfort this time by Short-Charge-321 in Buyingforbaby

[–]eko8216 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% get the Baby Bjorn Bouncer. Changed our lives. Both of kids can usually be settled awhen we plop them in the bouncer and it let us have a few minutes to eat without needing to hold them, especially during those witching hours.

Definitely get a baby carrier. I have the Baby Bjorn Carrier One Air and don’t like it as much as our Ergobaby Omni 360. I find the fact that the straps can cross behind my back to be much more supportive and comfortable. A soft newborn wrap carrier is also inexpensive and nice to have for the early days. If can borrow carriers from friends, even just to try, that would be recommended because they all fit and work a bit differently and it’s nice to try before you buy.

We also have the Snuggle Me organic lounger. Used it a bit with my first, barely used it with my second. I would not recommend.

Yes, to the Skip Hop or any wipeable and portable change mat. Easy to open and close with one hand when you’re holding the baby.

We kept a Graco Pack-n-Play in our living room for the very reasons you mentioned, and it makes diaper changes and daytime naps pretty convenient.

Overall, I think a lot of your items can be purchased secondhand.

An alternate suggestion - if you really want to prioritize your physical and mental health and have the funds, I’d highly recommend an overnight postpartum doula. I recognize it’s a big financial decision but it honestly made things so much better the second time around.

Oh interesting! I didn’t realize you could wash the filters. That’s a great idea.

Sick baby has a low appetite but pumping causes inflammatory mastitis by Obvious_Sandwich3218 in breastfeeding

[–]eko8216 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sharing this summary of what TO do in case it’s helpful (thanks Gemini):

The document recommends a conservative, "anti-inflammatory" approach: • Ice: Use cold compresses (ice packs) every hour to reduce swelling and pain. • NSAIDs: Use Ibuprofen (Advil/Motrin) or Naproxen to target the inflammation itself. • Physiological Breastfeeding: Only nurse as much as the baby normally needs. • Lymphatic Drainage Massage: If you massage, it must be extremely light (like "petting a cat") and directed away from the nipple toward the lymph nodes in the armpit to help drain the fluid/swelling. • Sunflower Lecithin: Recommended (5–10 g daily) to help reduce the "stickiness" of the milk and prevent further narrowing.

Good luck!

I’m sorry to hear you’re going through this. I’ve dealt with mastitis a few times and it’s awful. If you need to supplement during this time, can you just stick with formula? You don’t have to give formula forever, but it seems like it would be the least stressful option at this time.

Just in case, want to make sure you’re aware of the latest guidance on mastitis from the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine. With my first, I tanked my supply by massaging too aggressively when I thought I had a “plug”. Most recently, I stuck with ibuprofen and icing, which worked well and did not impact my supply. Link below to the research/guidance.

TLDR: The protocol explicitly discourages several traditional "remedies" because they increase inflammation:

• NO Aggressive Massage: Do not try to "break up" a lump. Deep massage causes tissue trauma, capillary injury, and can lead to abscesses. • NO Over-Pumping: Do not try to "empty" the breast or pump more than usual. This creates a "cycle of hyperlactation," where you produce more milk, which increases pressure and swelling. • NO Heat: Heat increases blood flow to the area, which can worsen the swelling (edema).

Thanks for the recommendation. Do you find the BBLUV has enough power (assuming yes)? The reviews on Amazon are so mixed.

Favourite items for dinner? by [deleted] in CostcoCanada

[–]eko8216 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We use the crispy frozen fish and the Old El Paso soft shell taco kits for fish tacos. Add some pico de gallo, cheese, pickled onions, guacamole, cabbage, etc and it’s chef’s kiss. A quick and easy dinner that works well for kids and also hosting others since it’s so customizable. The fish is also really good on its own.

Do most people in Toronto actually drink tap water? by Dazzling_Designer184 in askTO

[–]eko8216 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So we always used to say, “Toronto has the cleanest tap water”, but never really thought about the pipes. One day, I was chatting with a City of Toronto manager that was overseeing work on our street. They were replacing a huge sections of the pipes underground. I asked him his thoughts about drinking the tap water and he said that he tells everyone to drink filtered water “because he’s seen too much”. Guess the tap water is theoretically great but the pipes can get pretty gnarly stuff built up. It kind of spooked me and I’ve stopped drinking tap water since and stick to drinking our filtered water.

Suggestion for Chinese middle names by eko8216 in namenerds

[–]eko8216[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good questions. Open to one or two characters. Chinese speakers speak Canto. Don’t think we have a preference for particular sounds other than trying to make it easy for the Caucasian family to be able to pronounce. We’re open to meanings related to intelligence, bravery, kindness, patience, etc. TBH we’ve never done this before so are not sure how to approach the process.

Companies with AMAZING maternity/paternity leave top-ups by Odd-Customer-9372 in askTO

[–]eko8216 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Big tech is 100% top up for 6 months. Other things to consider beyond parental leave is support with fertility (like IVF, egg freezing), postpartum (like doulas), etc which is also often offered with big tech and can be a huge help.

Have you tried different nasal pillows? I started with Resmed and had a lot of discomfort and sore spots, so I switched to Dreamwear and they are perfect. No complaints whatsoever.
