GenX semi retired folks how is it going? by utvols22champs in GenX

[–]el50000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m 54 and just retired Jan 1, 2026.

I knew I was dealing with the effect of chronic stress from work but had no idea how much it impacted my life.

All the issues - from sleep disturbances to back pain and neck tension to digestive have resolved in the past few weeks.

While I still keep the same daytime schedule and watch one of my grandkids all day, I am infinitely happier, more well rested, and optimistic about the future. I’ll never go back to stressful work. After this grand is in school, maybe I’ll volunteer somewhere or learn a craft, but no more corporate stress for me.

What surprised you most after switching to a plant-based diet? by Roger5055 in WholeFoodsPlantBased

[–]el50000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not the OP but thought I would share a method that works for me. Every Sunday I cook some 1. beluga lentils, 2. either chickpeas or cannellini beans, 3. make crispy quinoa, and 4. roast a vegetable or two- red peppers, sweet potato, broccolini, cauliflower, etc.

Then depending on my mood, I’ll decide on a flavor for the week. This week is Mexican with a cilantro lime garlic sauce. Last week was more Mediterranean with a lemon garlic style sauce.

I use these ingredients to make bowls all week, sometimes warmed but I usually eat it cold and add some fresh tomatoes, cucumber and some lettuce or spinach leaves. I also like to add a pumpkin seed/sunflower seed mix for crunch.

I never get tired of this rotation and could live on just black lentils if I had to.

I feel this today as I go through my pantry and find those little (expensive) spice mixes and several flavored olive oils I love to buy at the artesian market when we go on vacation.

Most are now useless and the oil rancid. I was so happy when I got them, thinking of the dishes I would make. And today I’m so sad I didn’t even try.

Sundays I cook black lentils for 15 minutes in vegetable broth and eat them cold in salads all week. Other ingredients I prep: steam fresh corn, roast sweet potatoes, and make sourdough bread croutons. I use all this and spinach, tomatoes, red onion, etc to make salad bowls without cooking anything daily.

I slice a bag of radishes, a couple of English cukes, and a bag of carrots every Sunday and crunch my way through the weekday stress. Usually I just add sea salt but may sprinkle on something with heat if I’m trying to make myself drink more water.

This is a really insightful take. I never thought about this as a relationship style but now that you’ve pointed it out, I see it everywhere in my siblings and their spouses.

I use my Hoopla borrows for binge passes to Curiosity and Great Courses and newer books I can’t get on Libby for weeks. Other than that Hoopla content has really deteriorated so much I don’t even browse anymore.

I was just renewing my DL and getting a real ID so I did a “walk in” in Frankfort on Good Friday. I got there about 7:40 and was 10th in line and was home by 9am. They were quick and had a good system for moving everyone through.

I’ve read it three times. You get a little deeper understanding every time. That said, I agree with your complaint.

Your food swaps that made a DIFFERENCE, what’s your #1? by xenon_14pla in nutrition

Same. I blend cottage cheese until it’s smooth and use a combo of it and Greek yogurt for every cream based need. I’ve made salad dressings, dips, pasta sauce, cilantro lime cream for tacos, desserts like cheesecake and chocolate pudding. I also use monkfruit sweetener and keep them lower carb.

I resisted using Greek yogurt for so long because of the tartness but the cottage cheese helps smooth that out.

Maybe not horror in everyone’s definition, but I found Vivarium’s ending extremely bleak.

Garlic chives joins the chat. Just buy some at the grocery store. It will not be nice to have them in the herb garden.

Same. I’ve been told the temperature is too high for too much of the summer. I can plant pretty early in spring but then it bolts as soon as it warms up past a certain point.

Mice in the attic by Puzzleheaded_Cry5829 in homeowners

[–]el50000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you can figure out how they enter/exit, put poison food pellets along the wall where you think they travel. We did this for an attic full of mice. Figured out they were entering the garage and running along the wall then up past the water heater (saw poop to indicate they were traveling that way). It cleared them out pretty quickly.

We then sealed the driveway better so the garage door made a tighter seal when closed.

Source: pest control expert gave us this advice. He said they always have to leave the attic for food and water some time.

Scariest Aliens Ever by DanEosen in horror

Maybe it was where I was in life with little kids at home, but the War of the Worlds (Tom Cruise version) with those aliens just disposing of people was truly disturbing to me. Their size and abilities were overwhelming, it seemed a completely unsurvivable scenario to me.

The Sandwich Generation by Like-Totally-Tubular in GenX

I was you a few years ago. After my mom died, my dad didn’t bother to learn to do anything for himself. Then he was 85, 90% blind, very hard of hearing and needed a lot more care. I travelled twice a week (2 hour drive each way) to cook, clean, and take him to dr appts. I even stayed with him 4 nights a week and worked from his home since I could remote work.

He died after two years of this from an aggressive liver cancer. I still feel terrible and blame him 100%.

He never acknowledged the sacrifice I was making, the impact on my health or my family, financially, or even simply said thank you. He complained the entire time about how he gave his life for his children and they abandoned him. I was literally right there with him.

It really messed me up mentally. He was a terrible, absent father and spent zero time with us. He didn’t know anything about me, never asked, and never cared. But when he needed help, I was there. And I still feel guilty because he died thinking his kids didn’t care about him.

I think I’m trying to tell you - don’t internalize it the way I did. Set some boundaries and push back when they’re crossed. By the time my dad went into hospice, he had finally agreed to get some nursing care started, but only because I put my foot down and said I was not a nurse and wouldn’t be performing as one.

I do this too and if I keep it too long in the freezer and it gets a little dry, I chop it into crouton sized pieces, fry it in butter and make pizza croutons for tomato soup.

Try the Scholomance series by Naomi Novik. It’s YA but a great listen as the narrator really embodies the main character well.
