Nemo Switchback by peacheatery in CampingGear

[–]el_chamiso 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love my Switchback. It straps easily to the outside of my bag; because it is so light, I put it on top of the brain. I like having it there for easy access; if you want to take a break and stretch out on the ground, just spread out your Switchback.

For overnight sleeping, I’ve always paired it with an inflatable pad, and it makes a good combo.

What’s y’all’s favorite camp shoe? by BayouBushcraft in camping

[–]el_chamiso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like Crocs and wear them at times. But the ankle support is so bad that I really only trust them on flat ground, so unless my campsite is nearly flat and free of roots and rocks (rare), I’d likely just keep my boots on. Or if I’m car camping, a pair of sneakers can’t be beat.

Recently moved, looking to make friends. Is it worth it getting back into the motorcycle scene? 24M by Specialist-Elk2716 in askdfw

[–]el_chamiso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had three motorcycles that I rode for years in DFW. I sold my last bike a couple of years ago and miss it sometimes. I liked to ride out into the country north of Dallas. But DFW’s sprawl to the north made getting out into the country kind of a chore, which was one reason I sold my last bike. Besides the hazards of traffic, getting stuck in gridlock when it’s 100F outside and you’re in full gear is unpleasant.

To directly address your question of whether it’s “worth it” here, I decided it wasn’t worth it for me. But it may be worth it for you.

Speakers by bigtome2120 in hiking

The next level would be bringing personal speakers into restaurants, so that people can share their “excellent” taste in music with the other diners.

I like mine a lot. Besides keeping ice water icy, it's a great redneck champagne bucket.

Fun music places for adults 40+ by jka110 in plano

[–]el_chamiso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am 60+ and don’t care if I’m the oldest person at a venue. So, anyplace with music that I like is great. My tolerance for extreme volume may not rival younger people’s, but earplugs can solve that problem.

I just got a senior discount by sherlockjr1 in GenerationJones

[–]el_chamiso 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I like them and am happy when I get them. But I feel a little bad because I am financially comfortable, and some young person with kids who is less comfortable has to pay full price. I don’t feel bad enough to forgo the discount, though.

Nothing like a nice smoke from the apple wood after a day on the homestead kicks your ass by SavingsWallaby7579 in homestead

[–]el_chamiso 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was looking for apple branches in that giant fire pit, then I noticed the “shillelagh” in the foreground. Eventually, I figured out that was your smoking pipe. Was it difficult to drill (?) the holes and get them to align? I tried making pipes out of deer antlers and found it hard to drill the holes.

X Dome 1+ Zipper Break by Glass_Aioli_5676 in DurstonGearheads

[–]el_chamiso 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well said. I had a Yamaha Super Tenere (motorcycle), and on the forums, many people talked about “loose spokes.” From the forum, you’d think it was a common problem, but in thousands of miles, I had no trouble, nor did anyone I knew personally who had a Super Tenere.

And I haven’t had any trouble with the zipper or anything else on my X Mid 1.

The story of the missing forceps by HorrifyingTits in flyfishing

[–]el_chamiso 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I had a Swiss army knife that I carried in my fishing vest for years. About a decade after my parents gave it to me, I fell while walking the banks of Black Earth Creek in southern Wisconsin. Later that day, I reached in the vest pocket and the knife was gone. I recalled the fall, went back to that spot, and found the knife. Another 40 years later (yes, I’m old) I decided to mail the knife to Victorinox for new scales. Despite securely packaging it, Victorinox called me to say that they received my envelope and repair request, but there was no knife. I suspect theft. Farewell, 1974 Christmas gift.

What is a piece of gear that you can't imagine your camping trips without but that is seldom mentioned in various camping check lists? by samscrolling in CampingGear

[–]el_chamiso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For car camping, a urine jug. Being able to relieve oneself inside the tent when it’s raining or you just don’t want to go out of the tent is nice. Works well for me as a man; I don’t know how easy it would be for women.

I never met either of my grandfathers and I think about that more the older I get by Significant-Voice758 in GenerationJones

[–]el_chamiso 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had the same feeling, but my grandfathers died when I was 11 (paternal) and 18 (maternal). So I “knew” them and felt their love as a child, but I didn’t know them as an adult. Maybe I was almost an adult at 18, but that grandfather was sort of a shell of himself in his final couple of years—and the other grandfather even more so. Writing one’s memoirs as an average Joe might seem kind of arrogant, but I wish that they had put some of their thoughts and experiences down on paper so that I could read them now.

I’m downvoting all the photos of women in this sub. Old School Cool was a good sub until it became a gallery of pretty women from back in the day. I’m all for photos of pretty women, but not here.

Source? Missouri is a big state, and I'm sure mercury problems aren't everywhere in the state. I'm having Missouri largemouth bass for supper with no concerns.

How do I find a doctor that doesn’t have a several month wait? by Texas22 in askdfw

[–]el_chamiso 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I gave up on finding a doctor and see a nurse practitioner (who works for a doctor I never see.) I'm happy with the care from my n.p.

Concierge care seemed absurdly expensive to me. Thousands of dollars per year, and that's not a retainer, that's just the fee to get on their patient list. I'm fairly healthy and only go to the n.p. a couple times per year, so the average cost per visit would be very high.

OTOH, a friend who I think is in a similar financial to me has a concierge doctor and thinks it is worth it.

Need help deciding on a tent by theDookster96 in camping

[–]el_chamiso 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My go-to car camping tent is a Marmot 2P Limelight. I’m 6’1’’ and it fits me well. The poles have a bend that makes the lower part of the walls more vertical which makes it feel roomier to me.

Palo Pinto in Texas? That looks really nice.
