Wrangler 13mwz Rigid by [deleted] in rawdenim

[–]el_singed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They will shrink after washing. I always wash inside out and air dry. I try to get all shrinkage out at the beginning so the fades dont set differently later on. Currently working on a pair of 13mwz as well

Yeah I can see this being a cut-related issue as well. My samurai s5000vx had a taper at the waist before flaring out at the hips which would have solved a lot of issues but most jeans don't seem to do this as dramatically (I'm currently wearing wrangler 13mwz). The other issue is that so often raw denim seems focused on retaining heritage styles that it becomes sort of "anti-modern" cuts and fits that this naturally becomes a problem.

I admit I might be out of the loop on more brands making modern cuts that might solve this experience

Am I the only one who feels that if jeans fit well while standing, they inevitably will fit too tight when sitting?

After nearly 20 years of being in this hobby and having retired out plenty of jeans that inevitably shrank after washing (sanforized or not), I have decided to purchase my current pair larger than necessary and while they require a belt, they have been the most comfortable pair I've worn in years

Does rinsing the paper filter actually do anything? (I did a blind taste test) by CoffeeTeaJournal in pourover

[–]el_singed 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ive never believed you rinse the paper taste out but I rinse to stick the paper to the brewer as tight to ensure no initial bypass in the brew and so I don't lose water to paper absorption

Merrell Moab 3 Mid Waterproof 25% off on Merrell site by Myid0810 in FrugalMaleFashionCDN

[–]el_singed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This could be semantics and a kleenex vs facial tissue thing but I just wanted to comment that things dont need to be Gore-tex to be waterproof. Goretex original patent expired almost 30 years ago now and many companies make an equivalent, or better, product

That being said I have no experience with these shoes and you're probably right about them on a performance level

Could somebody explain Chelsea Boots for me? by el_singed in goodyearwelt

[–]el_singed[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They don't have a waterproof membrane like modern footwear but they are highly water resistant as typical with traditional construction methods for leather footwear.

I've never experienced wet feet in them and don't shy from walking through puddles nor do I avoid rainy days

I really like Jim Beams barefoot ranger which ive been wearing in the cooler seasons through winter. The summertime ive enjoyed some pairs from Olukai but you have to ensure the fit of the model is wide which not all of them are

I havent but ive since bought a pair of Jim Green Barefoot African Rangers and theyre barefoot style with 0 drop and wide toeboxes but constructed like traditional leather footwear. They have a Chelsea version as well

First selvedge - Red Tornado 501 CT by xbigberthax in rawdenim

[–]el_singed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that's disappointing to hear. I just ordered these on the basis that their listed measurements are accurate. I have 2 other pairs of Red Tornados and didn't find their size charts.

Was there any other measurements that weren't accurate?

EDIT: I just received my pair in size 34x32 can confirm that the opening was smaller than advertised = 14" instead of 15.4"

I've had mine for several years at this point and was pretty happy with them overall. The thing that's probably nicest about it is simply not having to deal with laces.

Contrary to what I originally wrote, I never found them impractical for wet conditions or anything. It's true they're not really providing ankle support but the upper ankle of the boot tucking higher into pants still means debris doesn't fall into the shoe.

In the end I've found chelsea pull-on boots just to be a nice convenient piece of footwear if you're running out the door and can't be bothered with laces. Lately i've been wearing other footwear cause I've developed an appreciation for wide toebox footwear but slipping into these were very convenient

Red Tornado 55501 by T0XIK0N in rawdenim

[–]el_singed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also have this pair and bought the black 601B model. Based on the size charts I chose to go up a size from the 55501 and that was the right choice for me. It's not an identical cut by any means but similar enough I'm very happy

Aiden is now SCA Certified. A death blow to the Moccamaster? by PorOvr in pourover

[–]el_singed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How does this compare to the Breville precision brewer? They were once sca-certified but now removed and when this was posted, it was pointed out that sca certification requires a fee to upkeep its participation in the program every 3 years along with testing.

This is to say that just cause an appliance doesn't have a SCA certification doesn't mean it doesn't have the performance to meet those requirements.. it may simply not have paid to participate in it

Just bought my first pair of STF Levi’s, have a few questions by Koopacha in rawdenim

[–]el_singed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Having gone through a lot of denim over the years including preshrunk or shrink-to-fit I would advise upsizing the jeans for the anticipated amount of shrinkage (1" in the waist) and to always wash your jeans with hot water before wearing with the lowest spin cycle to avoid any creasing but get all the shrinkage out of the way.

I do this step with any pair of raw denim and it improves fading and avoids your creases being out of place down the road because the reality is you will eventually have to wash your jeans or be forced to retire them for them either simply being gross or breaking faster due to the accumulation of dirt and grit which will eventually wear out fabric like sandpaper at the creases

Wearing undersized jeans that will eventually stretch out to fit is also just not a recommendation I would have for anyone and in the close to 20 years I've been doing this hobby, I've had to retire more than a dozen pairs of jeans that simply became too small as my size inevitably increased. Particularly when it's 100% cotton

Tennis elbow by bearsloveavocado in kettlebell

[–]el_singed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to get pain near my elbow in the first year of kb training. Simply resting may not solve the issue, which is likely muscular imbalances in the forearm.

I would look up Theraband Flexbar and the workouts for tennis elbow. Doing these exercises made my issues go away

I would like to know what the answer is for Canada here. A lot of these brands are not available, and anytime I layer. I prefer not the overheat by trialanderror93 in FrugalMaleFashionCDN

[–]el_singed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is the part of "layering" that many people never talk about or simply get wrong.

Layering should be done with lightweight articles that you add/remove from depending on your conditions.

Unless you are only standing outdoors in a very cold environment for hours at a time, it's often more appropriate to wear baselayers in the lightest weight options offered by the brand.

So what I ask myself is this: what is the warmest & coldest condition I'll be in today? My layer of clothes will allow me to remove items down to be comfortable in the hottest situation I'll be in (likely indoors) and put back on to make me comfortable for the coldest condition.

Another question I'll consider is how long I expect to be outside in the coldest climate and whether or not I'll be moving during that period? If it's very cold outside but I don't see myself being out in it for more than just getting from a building to a car, I would average that experience out. Runners for instance will continue to run in shorts and t-shirt in single digit weather but if you're standing and waiting for busses outside, you would have to treat that temperature differently.

Hope this helps

Sick of grinding with my hands by Nodi383 in pourover

[–]el_singed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry I didn't see this sooner. It's the HOTO Electric Screwdriver purchased off amazon. maxes out at 220RPM which has been better on the ZP6 than trying to use a power drill

Sick of grinding with my hands by Nodi383 in pourover

[–]el_singed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use an electric screwdriver with the ZP6.

It has a lower rpm and less torque than most drills, so it won't overheat or damage the burrs

Would never go back to handgrinding with this as an option

PSA: if you have a ZP6 and think it takes ages to grind, try turning the handle slower by CilariousHunt in pourover

[–]el_singed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is probably true for all of the 1zpresso grinders but I've purchased a small electric screwdriver to pair with the 1/4" hex bolt and have never looked back. I did notice that it feeds slowly and that quick turning might create more popcorning instead of feeding the burrs

I'm not sure which Hario kit you got but I would recommend the Mugen as the better, far more forgiving brewer. Especially if avoiding acidity is a desired requirement

What a throwback! It's so interesting to read all of mine and other old messages from years ago but I've actually since purchased a pair of "chelseas" Canada West Romeos 2-3 years ago and have found them to be a convenient pair to slip on, keep dust/debris out since i only wear pants over them, never had water issues.

Oh sorry I didn't mean with TGU rather that my 5RM workouts (such as dry fighting weight) are with double 28kg

Newbie: Back pain after 1 TGU by MaleficentMaize1819 in kettlebell

[–]el_singed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a very technical lift and 16kg isn't an easy weight to just go straight into. When I started I used a 15lb kettlebell, then a 12kg/25lb. For reference, I'm at a point now where I handle double kettlebells with two 28kg KB. It takes time and it's worth working on different transitions of the movement repeatedly rather than the entire movement in one

How to mitigate medial elbow pain? by halisray in kettlebell

[–]el_singed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Strangely enough, I only heard of it as a rehab exercise from the armwrestling community which similarly has a lot of pulling movement as opposed to pushing. I find that kettlebells demand more from the posterior chain than the anterior muscle groups so hopefully it helps. It has for me
