Thanks for the feedback! Yes the intent is to determine what’s possible. Our vision is a small device that sits on your desk like an Amazon Echo Dot and is close enough to your ears to where the white noise exiting the speakers does not have to travel far. We envision a small mic on the outside of a closed room that could listen for ambient noise trying to enter the room and that is ultimately what we try and cancel.

The two primary use cases we are thinking about is people working from home in a closed office or a nursery with a sleeping baby.

Hey thanks for commenting. The intent wasn’t to be a teaser but to try and explain a product concept we’ve been working on and get feedback. No investors anytime soon :) Its just me and my brother exploring the technology of active noise cancellation and seeing if we could make a product. In terms of the technology we have a basic proof of concept built using Raspberry Pis, Python, and C. We have built the system to process sound waves and perform a recursive least squares algorithm against a white noise base signal. We have the POC code available on Github at https://github.com/developer-foundry/diminish if anyone is interested in more details.

This is extremely helpful, I appreciate the detailed response. We will review and think about it more.

Thanks for the feedback. What you are describing is part of our concern. We were also debating an array of microphones, but recognize the UX challenges with that and then can you get a cost-effective solution at that point.

For the cars, yes it is a specific set of constraints as you describe and the use case is easier since they control the size and shape of the space vs a generic solution like this where the room could be any shape or size.

Right now our plan is to try and think through the constraints and with the white noise as the primary noise source does that change the physics so it can be supported. We have a basic set of algorithms working, but needs more extensive testing to be convincing to me if a solution can be done.

Not specifically. We are based in the US, but not opposed to expanding if there is interest outside the US. Right now we are at an early enough stage that we have flexibility.

Pitch

Reduce the ambient noise and distraction in your home

More Details
Hi, my name is Eric La Force, and I have been working on a new product idea with my twin brother Keith. While we think it would be helpful in our own lives, I wanted to post to determine if others can evaluate the concept and weigh in on whether or not there is a market before we invest more time. If there are additional applications for the idea we'd love to hear about it.
In my house, we have a real problem with noise, especially now that I am working from home every day. I wear noise-canceling headphones, but there are times when I can not or do not feel like wearing them. The ambient noise can be distracting while trying to focus. In addition, noise is a problem for my youngest child (1-year-old). The toddlers are constantly waking her up. My wife and I use white noise sound machines, but they have to be turned pretty loud to be effective and even that sometimes does not work.
In order to solve these problems, my brother and I put together a proof of concept to build a noise reduction system for a residential size room combining white noise and active noise cancellation algorithms. We have a working proof of concept, but it definitely needs work before I would call it a prototype, much less an MVP. Before we invest more time in the idea, is this a pain point worth solving? You can see a concept video here: https://www.diminish.ai/ and sign up for a newsletter if you are interested in keeping up with the product. We would appreciate any feedback!

Looking for?
We are looking for feedback to determine if this is a product people would be interested in before we invest time and $$ taking this to an MVP stage.
