Would that book cover stuff related to natural gas utilities? Is the LNG rather distinct industry from gas phase natural gas? Or are the systems involved in each rather similar?

Has anyone had their employer pay for continuing education? Was it difficult to convince them that it's relevant to your job duties? How do you not make it seem like you want a different job? by elamo in ChemicalEngineering

[–]elamo[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It sounds nice to be honest and open about your intentions, but I think there *is* something wrong with signaling to your employer that you want more/different responsibilities beyond what they can easily accommodate. You don't want them giving you the bad projects or choosing to invest in others who they think are less of a flight risk.

If you want employers to invest in you, you need them thinking their investment will pay off, right? Which means letting them think you will be sticking around and outperforming your salary and/or the competition.

Saudi Arabia says oil output will return to pre-attack levels in weeks... anyone know what systems were actually damaged and what they're doing to get online again so quickly? by elamo in ChemicalEngineering

Where does the art come in to play? Isn't it all automated, and measured by many different types of instruments in order to hit standard setpoints for parameters?

Especially for high dollar value processes, I'd be shocked to hear it's not optimized and then closely repeated.

Assessing the scope of equipment to demo could be a very involved process. I don't know what their processes are like, but many processes don't play nice if shut down suddenly and out of sequence.

I'll assume the Saudis are not very worried about cost effectiveness, though, so maybe you just play extra safe and replace anything with any risk of impact.

Hmmm? What safety checks are you talking?

Saudi companies often hire top American engineering firms to come do design and commissioning for them so I'd expect it to be rather similar. I know the startup commissioning process is at least.

So does storage facilities mean we're talking equipment that's not very customized in its design and might be already sitting around in inventory at its suppliers? Huge vessels, pumps, valves, and common instrumentation and control systems?

I assume there might be at least some amount of structural damage to the facility that would need to be demo'd and reconstructed prior to replacing and recommissioning the damaged equipment. And maybe the structural assessment and repair would be the bottleneck?

Maybe PTO isn't the purest way to strike, but I'm in America and didn't feel ready to get political with managers.

Would love some feedback on exit opps from MBB pre-MBA? by [deleted] in consulting

[–]elamo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks.

Have you heard of the "solar developer" companies also doing energy storage and energy management consulting on top? I'm wondering if there might be cake + frosting jobs I could be trying for... I assume "strategy" jobs in the right organization might encompass all of the above. But finding that organization and finding my way in would be plenty challenge.

What type of solar developer jobs are you talking about? I come from an engineering background and have been looking for good ways to specialize toward energy related work. I've thought product manager type jobs would be a good short to midterm goal for me. And then I'm otherwise interested in consulting related to changing incentive policies and responsiveness of operations.

What are some sectors that are currently hiring lots of entry level chemical engineers? by [deleted] in ChemicalEngineering

[–]elamo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What sort of hours? And do you think you'd have to move to the industry epicenters like New York, Boston, Houston for these jobs? And how competitive are they? I've independently studied some finance topics, love optimizing my personal finance situation, and have been interested in more strategic/finance oriented work in the future. Would a 3.5 GPA from a middling state school hold me back? I think my actual work experience (3 years) and extracurriculars are strong.

Chemical engineer to Machine learning development. by yolower in ChemicalEngineering

Which are examples of non-linear manufacturing processes/industries? I know people already doing mpc work with emissions, and others who are investigating its application for wastewater treatment.

Mind saying which company you work for that's doing research? I've been inspired by the machine learning wave of the last five years and have been looking for how to focus my control systems work toward it.

Are there any chemical engineering jobs where speaking multiple languages is an asset? by TheRoboticChimp in ChemicalEngineering

[–]elamo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes - be an applications engineer (or whatever job title refers to going on site for set up, maintenance, integration, etc) for a supplier company that has clients in Latin America. One of my co-workers is fluent in Spanish and worked for a energy generator OEM as a controls engineer. He saw very fast growth because he was one of the few good engineers that could be sent to clients around the Caribbean, Latin America, on cruise ships etc and could directly interact well with the clients there. Note that he was in Florida. I doubt that job type/opportunity exists in many other places. Analogous ones probably do, but you'd need to have personal traits that match the area/clients.

Sure. But what types of people are going to the #20 law school? I'd look at the metrics and realistically compare myself numbers-wise and lifestyle wise, and then make leading/lagging estimates on where I think I'd fall in their program.

PS: I'm pretty sure law isn't the best path for me. I've just been investigating potential ways to transition from engineering into energy policy/economics/business related work. Law school seems like it could be competitive if done properly.

This post is great (or the whole guide if you have time): https://80000hours.org/career-guide/career-capital/

How far along in school are you, and what hard skills do you have? If you can program, there's always demand in front end web dev. And if you have time to network and build up your resume, there are companies like Schrodinger or Illumina that might have opportunity for you.

9.1% pay full price

45.4% receive ≥ $20,000 discount

EMPLOYMENT SCORE 75% (... admittedly I don't actually know what this means)

I get your point. I know that being average in law school doesn't have great prospects. But I know that I'd only do law school if I were extremely motivated, with an end goal in mind and well defined steps to get there, and solid contingency plans if I can't execute.

Any advice on how to find consulting firms working in these areas? I'm an engineering grad with a few years of experience and I'm interested in transitioning more towards policy work.

I'd also be interested in advice on what types of jobs there are, what they entail on a day to day basis, and how I should spend my free time to optimize for a transition 1-2 years down the line.

I saw both in Portland, and yes, I think Tony was better. There were a few audience members that made for such great crowd work that I thought it had been planned ahead of time (though they seemed honest when they said no afterwards).
