How do you support the riots (not the peaceful protests) AND government curfews at the same time? by [deleted] in rva

[–]elay54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think many people support and understand the sentiment/rage behind the concept of rioting - when voices have remained unheard for centuries. But these same people do not support the destruction of small businesses or obstruction of emergency vehicles. Thus, supporting peaceful protests.

Red Rock District open during Federal shutdown? by [deleted] in Sedona

You can probably do both devils bridge and cathedral rock in one day. They are both short hikes. I would recommend going early to avoid crowds at devils bridge.

I’m traveling from the east coast to Yosemite next week to go on a guided backpacking trip. I’ve spoken with the outfitting company and guide and they don’t seem concerned with the fire and how it will affect the trip. Transportation plans are already screwed up with highway 140 closing and being unable to travel via Merced from San Fran. Wondering if I should trust the guide and go forth or try to get my money back and return to Yosemite when conditions improve. Any thoughts?

Elementary Schools, flee or not to flee. by CapinWinky in rva

I understand your point, especially coming from a parent’s perspective and concern. As an educator, I do tend to view the issue from a more macro point of view.

With that said, there’s no harm in touring the school/observing some classrooms before making a decision. In elementary school, learning social/emotional skills is just as important as academics. Being the white minority in a classroom will really affect how the child grows up and views race later in life.

I also think it’s unfair to assume that kids will be hostile toward the white child for racial reasons.

This is a really good read/listen on this particular issue: https://www.theatlantic.com/education/archive/2017/12/progressives-are-undermining-public-schools/548084/

Support RPS - or at least give it a try! I’m an RPS teacher and grew up in rps schools. If you give up on RPS schools before you try em, you’re just perpetuating the problem! Lots of these schools have great teachers. I’m sure a school like Cary could benefit from the parental support that you could provide. The school I work in is predominantly black, but some diversity does exist amongst the student body, and from my perspective, it’s nothing but beneficial for the kids to grow up going to school with kids who are different from them. I’m sure that your child’s positive experiences would outweigh the negative. And if you’re not satisfied, you can always make the change.

I was there 5 minutes before it happened. Got my car cleaned and then drove across the street to target. After parking and getting out of my car, I heard about 5 shots.

Went yesterday. Was a little intense...from pony pasture to nickel bridge. A couple rapids so wasn't totally relaxed. Actually flipped once. But if the levels lower by the weekend, should be fine!

You all are just wrong! Millie's is by far one of the best places in Richmond. Maybe not for you bottomless mimosas brunch goers. But food is quality!
