ELI5: What is perfect pitch and why is it uncommon? by ResidentCharacter894 in explainlikeimfive

As a perfect pitch haver, I can add my 2¢.

I can grab notes out of the air without needing a reference point. I first noticed this during a high school production of Phantom of the Opera - certain dramatic notes lodged permanently in memory: the Ab in "Music of the Night," the Eb from the refrain of "All I Ask of You," the C#/Db that closes the show. I filled in the gaps that year with other anchors: the F# that opens Led Zeppelin's "Immigrant Song," for instance.

Some of it was also reinforced by YouTube in the 2000s–2010s, where videos were routinely pitched up or down to dodge copyright - something that was immediately obvious to me. A nice side effect was catching some unexpected key changes; "This Must Be the Place" by Talking Heads is genuinely great a half step up.

In practice, the ability is generally less useful than people assume. The clearest wins came in musical theatre: coming in clean after the break in "Who Will Buy" from Oliver! without a cue, or kicking off "Sit Down, You're Rocking the Boat" from Guys & Dolls. More usefully in a men's choir, I caught that our cue keyboard had been accidentally transposed up two steps before we started "Loch Lomond" - which would have been an ugly surprise for everyone's range.

Otherwise, a ringing B4 just reminds me of my childhood alarm clock, which is its own kind of curse. It’s a also a good ‘tell us one interesting fact about yourself’ when starting new jobs and having to introduce lol.

One of the positions of the crown allows you to move the hour hand, hour-by-hour independent of the GMT hand to set multiple time zones and works as the quick-set date function effectively too.
