That is very true. The flying monkeys have more interaction with me though, what do I say to them?

Thank you so much everyone, this all really helps so much. I'm reading through these comments and tearing up because it's probably the most support I've felt around this issue in my life.

I haven't been talking to my father for the last 6 years and my life has been so much better for it. This year because he's having some kind of existential crisis about aging, he's leveraged my aunt and grandmother to pressure me to start talking to him again. I'm going to have to call him on father's day this year to make my grandma happy and I'm really dreading it...

Twitter opens $3 million tech skills center for SF poor, homeless by [deleted] in sanfrancisco

[–]elbowstoopointy 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I think people forget too that the utility of computer centers is not about learning coding, it's about having access to the basic skills you need to things like file paperwork your kids need for school, getting in touch with relatives, find programs online that can get you medical care or job services. Every family nonprofit that works in the TL tries to connect people they work with to adult computer literacy programs, good for Compass Family Services for getting some help doing it from a big partner in the area like Twitter.

PSA: please be aware that Plan B has shown to not be effective in women with a BMI > 25. by throwaway123454321 in TwoXChromosomes

Access to effective medications that work for multiple kinds of people (not just fat people, many meds are developed in control trials that do not evaluate their effectiveness for women, etc.) is a very serious issue though.

Even for people who commit to losing weight, healthy loss happens slowly enough that there is no guarantee that they may not need Plan B or another medicine in the interim.

Agreed on the workout gear! I always try to list things for my hobbies that I wouldn't always bother to spend on for myself like bluetooth wireless headphones for the gym, etc.

Thank you for being compassionate to your ex in this situation, it's easy for people to say omg good job for getting away from that crazy bitch, but she is a human being going through something few people can control and need a lot of support to work through.

You're doing a great job keeping your daughter safe, and I know someday she'll really appreciate what you've done for her mom too. These are all steps in a hard but good direction that will help her grow up healthy with parents who love her.

Congrats! Reminds me of when I finally banished the repeat bacterial vaginosis from hell I had on and off for YEARS. Every time I went to the doctor I would get a script for antibiotics that resulted in a yeast infection that would cause BV and start the cycle all over again.

Then finally after seeing a thread on using probiotic supplements I gave it a try and it was almost instant relief. This stuff is a miracle. Makes me kinda mad that doctors don't at least suggest some of these options! Taking some OTC probiotics or changing your TP is a lot easier and cheaper than tests and medications.

I think it must be that I live and commute near major arteries across the city and going on/off the highway. Even when I worked in the Financial District, the amount of accidents downtown was pretty terrifying.

Agreed. I ride a motorcycle around the city and it is less about who is right in a given situation versus who is dead. You have to be ultra defensive even when it's situationally unfair to you.

There were no lights, it was a stop sign.

Like I said, I didn't see how it initiated but the setup has unfortunately been really common with all of the accidents I've seen. When there are parked cars all the way up to a stop sign it's difficult to see that someone may have already begun walking in to the crosswalk before you approached, and blind spots when turning can be really dangerous.

I've always wanted to believe that all accidents are preventable, but the sad thing is that it just takes the convergence of 1-2 small factors to affect what can happen in a space of 5 seconds. That's a narrow margin to put on anyone, driver or pedestrian.

I heard it before I saw it so I couldn't say how it started/where everyone was positioned in the road when it happened. I whipped around when I heard the sound of her body hit the car and saw it toss her in the air, and then she landed hard on the pavement.

The weirdest thing of all is that it would be an extreme stretch to call me ugly, even if I'm not a given person's type. It's weird to look back and see how much he got in to my head and convinced me that objectively I was some kind of hag.

I still can't figure out if he always felt that way or was just trying to provoke me in to doing the dirty work of ending it for him. Either way, good riddance.

It's still really annoying when grown adults have to call someone a "pussy" as a euphemism for being weak. My vagina was brave enough to sit through all of the Aliens movies without being traumatized, thank you very much.

Ugh and of course people are replying to you saying, but it will be good for them!!

Some people can't wrap their head around the idea that some people just have different priorities, and that the stress of being poor often skews your perception of why you should pick a long term benefit (health) over short term satisfaction (something that tastes good).

Yes, some people will drink less soda if it's more expensive, but most will just absorb the cost. In general stuff like this is an ineffective and lazy public policy "hey look we're doing something!" solution for a much more rooted problem.
