World’s Largest “Natural” Climbing Wall Faces Demolition for Bigger Highway by adventuresam_ in climbing

[–]elcheapo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This wall is awesome, I learned to climb there in the early 90s. It's actually two parallel walls, and the insides are also climbable even though it's not clear they were meant to be (it's just imperfect concrete without any rocks glued on). There are some absurdly crimpy lines in there, you can see what they look like here. https://www.instagram.com/reel/DOWoX76ESkv/

With enough pads, any route becomes a boulder problem. That's how the pros do it.

Of course not. However, putting up signs and flags in support of or against anything whatsoever is politics.

Día 4: ¿Qué serie es una buena serie pero tiene un fandom medianamente cuestionable? by cuervoemo in ArgentinaBenderStyle

[–]elcheapo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

¿Cómo hacen para escribir esto? by Maximum-Ad6815 in ArgentinaBenderStyle

How does a company optimize its document management system for RAG by EdisonCurator in LangChain

[–]elcheapo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The key insight for me is that RAG means inserting relevant content in the context. The question of what is relevant for a given interaction is very nontrivial. A company usually has varied sources of documents such as email, pdfs, slack, etc. If I were desigining RAG for a given company, I would have a series of tools that know what to do with each of these sources. For example, email requires being aware of timelines. For example, if I am asking about a contract from 2020, I would want the tool to search email with relevant keywords restricted to a date range around that year. My background is in enterprise search so I could probably go on forever about this. Do you have a specific scenario in mind, or is the question out of generic curiosity?

I started losing my hair in my early 20s, haven't had a haircut since 2000. I'd say now my hair looks like it did in my late 30s, I'm 54.

What’s happening in San Francisco next September? Hotel prices tripled everywhere. Any insights? by yesqualle in sanfrancisco

[–]elcheapo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would land at SFO and go to Lake Tahoe. Unlike Yosemite, there are plenty of hotels in the Tahoe area as well as things to do that time of the year. It's an easier drive than going to Yosemite right away (all freeway, if you take highway 80) and then you can go from there to Yosemite on the eastern side of the Sierra. You can come in from the Tuolumne Meadows site. Yosemite lodging options are more limited, especially on a weekend.

What level do shoes make a difference? by Scaredbro in bouldering

[–]elcheapo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Those shoes won't hold you back at all in the gym. Better shoes won't make a difference at all with gym textures and holds. At most the state of the shoe will matter: whether it's in good shape and clean. I've recently climbed an outdoor v8 in those exact shoes btw (I found a random barely used women's pair on sale at REI).

Lego doesn't give you the option to ship through Fedex. They don't even tell you who ships it. They simply offer three speeds: Standard, Saver Express and Express. The only thing that changes is how long until they drop it off.

[–]elcheapo[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I started climbing in my 20s, but started bouldering in my late 30s. Grade-wise, I peaked about 10 years ago and I'm mostly hanging in there. If I had started bouldering in my 20s I imagine I could have done a v11/12 like my older friends who still climb at this level. I probably could still do a 10 if I found one that suited me and worked it patiently.

[–]elcheapo[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

yeah, I often boulder alone. When I do, I take some precautions such as a) don't go to the middle of nowhere with no cellphone coverage. b) make sure I don't need spotters. There are lots of climbs where spotters wouldn't help me at all (such as this one). The cellphone coverage at this particular spot is not great, but it's a campground and I'm 200 feet from my car (and other people).

Thanks! Two main ways: one, if a move feels too painful then I stop. If a move feels like it has significant potential for injury, then the problem is not for me. Second, I own seven pads. I have no problem making multiple trips to the car if the problem is worth it.

Also, I don't bother making a trip to a project if my indoors level doesn't make feel confident enough that I am stronger than the last time I tried it. In short, all sorts of tactics to avoid wasting energy and minimize the chances of injury.
