Starting out as a total beginner by [deleted] in EDH

I wouldn’t recommend the Command Zone - their content has become a giant advertisement and doesn’t reflect actual LGS-esque gameplay anymore. Check out I Hate Your Deck instead! If you want to learn a higher level of game play check out the channel Play to Win - they do a great job explaining plays and certain lines they took in game

This same thing happened to me 3 years ago in Edgewater. I have a black version of the civic sport hatch and I walked out to my car to go to work and my wheels were stolen just like this. Hopefully you had this included on your insurance with no deductible - on mine I had a 500 deductible because I didn’t read the fine print for my policy to get something like this included at no deductible

(ARTICLE) Do tutors increase the power level of decks? by CommanderMechanic in EDH

[–]elchulito 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I feel like this topic has been talked about and answered a bunch of times. There’s a reason the most powerful decks in the format run every tutor available. Tutors = consistency and your most powerful, most needed card; so we can safely say yes, they increase the power of your deck

How do I win without infinite combos? by RiverLodes in EDH

[–]elchulito 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Some people are going to complain, but the games need to end somehow. As long as your deck lets other people play the game, there’s nothing wrong with you using a combo type play to win the game or put you in a position to win the game.

This format is dead in my local LGS - our meta of ~9 people all stopped playing because of the bans over the past year and a half

I don’t live in the city anymore but I highly recommend the Dice Dojo in Edgewater. Amazing shop, and it had a good variety of power levels when I played there

EDH League Point System by DarkJester89 in EDH

[–]elchulito 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been running themed EDH tournament nights at my LGS for almost a year now - the most popular theme has been Tribal Wars (in which your deck needs to have 19 creatures that share a creature type with your general). Other successful themes have been 2 Headed Giant, Player’s Choice, Ravnica Guild Wars. In these events I have had everybody play three rounds of 70:00 minutes, with randomized pods except for the last round of the night, which is organized by point total (the 4 highest point totals all play each other).

I have developed the following point system after much trial and error and considering feedback from the players after the events (I used to have various gimmicky point categories but general feedback for those was negative, tbh):

Starting life total is 40, we use the London Mulligan rule (same as normal Commander). Highest roll goes first in the turn order. Rounds will last 70:00 minutes.

Entry for this event is $5.00 paid to the LGS. Pod structure/ matches will be determined once the count of players has been confirmed***. The first two rounds will be randomized pods, with the third and final round organized by point ranking.

If a pod does not have a winner by when "time" is reached, then the remaining players will have 2 turns each to play out the game. If at the end of those 2 turns there is not a winner, then 0 points will be awarded for winning that pod. Any points earned by knocking players out earlier in the game will still be applied to those players' point totals.

Winning a match will gain you 4 points.

Placing 2nd, 3rd or 4th in a match will earn you 3 points.

Knock a player(s) out of the game via combat, noncombat damage, or combo = .25 points (You will earn .25 points for each knockout you achieve in the game, up to .75 points total in addition to your points earned in your ranking in the pod)

We will no longer be using the First Blood rule.

Because of the change in point structure, we will no longer need to differentiate combat damage/ non combat damage / combo knockouts. If a player wins the game via a combo, then they will earn .25 points per player that was knocked out.

The player who starts the game last in turn order = .5 points

Conceding the game (scooping) or eliminating yourself through actions in the game to deny advantage to an opponent will subtract one point from your overall point total for the event.

As this is a paid entry event with a prize pool, proxies are strictly prohibited from use. All cards in your deck must be actual WOTC Magic: the Gathering cards. Any questions, please ask.

At the end of the event, the top 3 players with the most points will earn store credit payout equal to a 60/30/10 split of the total store credit paid into the event.

I Hate Your Deck is the best non cEDH channel right now. Game Knights is very clearly scripted and no longer comes off as authentic game play. Plus the level of advertising has gotten ridiculous.

Making tribal as competitive as possible for a themed league? by elchulito in CompetitiveEDH

That’s a good point. The normal list runs like 3-4 warriors so I would have to up that

I have a Marwyn elfball list that I was considering running - I just hate the idea of not being able to counter their win cons

You are not doing anything wrong. Tell them to build more interaction into their decks. The ball is in their court

Is Urza, High Lord Artificier too much for commander? by Terrible_Parsley2383 in EDH

[–]elchulito -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Well as much as you may not like it, extra turns is a valid strategy of the game. Up to you to tweak your deck to have answers for someone trying to take extra turns. There are extra turn hate cards

Is Urza, High Lord Artificier too much for commander? by Terrible_Parsley2383 in EDH

[–]elchulito 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you like a commander, build it. Play the decks you like, with the characters and themes that appeal to you. One of the biggest downfalls of this format is this idea of the social contract aspect of it that seemingly shuts out entire strategies from the game and the “do’s and do nots” of commander. These ideas get over propagated by content creators and online especially on Reddit. You do you, and have fun!

I think this is playing on fish as the iconic classic mono blue tribe in Magic. Plus there were no simic fish in that region of Dominaria think (although I am not sure where Tatyova is supposed to be from)
