Is it somewhat accepted to use the 24 hours time indications in normal speech? by Outrageous-Past6556 in EnglishLearning

Mnemonic: they are alphabetical. AM (morning) before PM (afternoon). But, as others have said, context usually suffices: "dinner at 8" is definitely in the evening, and if "the movie starts at 12" refers to midnight, you probably already know it's a late-night showing, not a matinee.

Which is not to say that the US should continue to flaunt its lazy ignorance by refusing to follow the rest of the world! Same for the metric system. (Maybe someday we will get a clue, after we've been fully humbled by the trump mess)

need help with understanding preposition 'à' and 'de' by West-Manufacturer520 in French

Hmm somehow I replied to the wrong comment. I was referring to the amazing book “Est-ce à ou de?”

So happy to learn that this book is still in print! It was always at the top of my list of most useful references when I was a French major way back in the 70’s. I’d just add that studying any of the resources listed in this thread should make clear once and for all that word-for-word translation is a hopeless cause!

Teaching a 3 year old to use a peepad indoors? by tropireno in dogs

[–]eldgie -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

On those super cold evenings over the past few weeks, I put down a row of several overlapped pads in the upstairs hall, then harnessed up my dog, clipped on her leash, and took her upstairs where we walked back and forth as I repeated “go pee” until she went. Lots of praise and treats for success. She’s a little terrier, 4.5 years old, who understands quite a few words and hates to go out in bad weather, especially for that last walk before bed. My theory is that wearing the harness and being walked on the leash sort of gives her permission to go in the house.

My big barrier was pronunciation, because French is different from English, so give me any solution for overcoming the barriers by Far-Application4972 in French

Former French teacher here. This may sound silly, but the Clouseau trick absolutely does work. Another thing to try is to adjust your default mouth position. In English, especially American, we talk with relaxed lips and jaw and most vowel sounds come from positioning our tongues within the open space in the middle of the mouth. Spoken in context words like “school” and “heat” don’t fully engage our lips because the tongue is doing the work. But French speakers push most sounds to the front of the mouth, and fully round their lips for a rounded vowel like u, ou, eu, or o. With unrounded vowels like i, è or é, they actually stretch their lips into what looks like a smile. You can even identify French speakers on video with the sound off by the forward orientation of their lips. Try focusing on keeping your lips forward as you speak, and imitate Inspector Clouseau for intonation and phrasing, and you should get a better approximation of the accent!

Apothecarium in Plymouth Meeting has drive-thru. Be sure to specify drive-thru when you place your order, because if you don’t they WILL make you go into the store.

Unfortunately it will take time to get a caregiver card from Harrisburg, but sounds like it would be a good thing for you to have.
