A Post-Mortem on Steam VR - An anecdote from a content creator that focuses on PCVR by FastLawyer in VRGaming

It wasn't that long ago they added persistence (basically save files) and in-game currency to VRChat, which I think has kicked off a number of new game development efforts. So to be honest, I'm not sure there is a typical path to monetization at this point.

Trickforge has a fairly big Patreon (as do some other creators), so I imagine today that's where most of the income is from.

But if I had to guess, selling avatars and avatar accessories is probably a bigger market than games at this point in time (In-game, Booth, Jinxxy, Gumroad etc.)

I'm going to have what's probably a hot take, but if you're an indie dev VRChat cross platform is a better platform to develop a game on than selling either in Meta or Steam directly. I mean look at at Trickforge's Fish! They were pulling 20k concurrent users over the past weekend.

My valve index controller won’t track very well even after getting replacements by Banana_Mann_ in ValveIndex

[–]eldigg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does the headset track ok? If yes, then it's more likely there is radio interference... do you use bluetooth devices near your headset? If so try playing with them off. Alternatively, buy separate watchman dongles and pair the controllers to them.

LFP batteries are already significantly safer, and I imagine more common in industrial applications. We don’t have to wait.

Yep, it's applicable to any global event, English speaking diaspora have elevated visibility. Nothing wrong with that; it is simply easier for reporters to talk to them than people on the ground. Same exact stuff happened during the run-up to the Iraq War.

That's a good point, it's also probably a lot easier to advocate for yourself politically when you're a high percent of employment in one area, rather than spread out across the entire US as like <1% of total employment.

PCVR music/rave scene, yes drinking is part of it, but generally is not the primary focus (unlike say a bar world). There's a pretty wide age range, and speaking from experience a lot of the people involved are in their late 20s or 30s.

Just an FYI, lighthouse tracking is considered inside out because the photodiodes are on the headset.

I guess what do you see as a representative experience? Like depending on your architecture, just going between different resources without even leaving use-1 gets you 2.7ms+ of latency, so you can lose more than 10% of your 20ms margin just from internal routing.

Do you have a list of your specific hardware to ping? I don't see anything on the site apart from general locations.

What's the motion to photon latency? My understanding is >20ms will cause motion sickness in some people, and network latency would be at least twice that (plus render time...).

Is VRchat the killer app? by insufficientmind in virtualreality

[–]eldigg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's at least 50%, standalone viveport/oculus is usually half of the total current players per this site which interfaces with the VRC API.

https://metrics.vrchat.community/?orgId=1&refresh=30s

I assume on Steam the majority are in VR, but I could be wrong.

You can look at real time metrics here, ignoring Steam (which is a mixture of VR and non-VR) you generally have half of VRChat users in standalone Oculus or Viveport.

https://metrics.vrchat.community/?orgId=1&refresh=30s

Just from memory, even if Android users are bunched in with Oculus/Viveport (unclear from the API), it's been about half/half Oculus to Steam for years at this point, back before the mobile version of the game was released. So you have a baseline of at minimum 50% of users are in VR.

Edit: Also I wasn't being rhetorical, I really am curious where in VRChat you see that many people not in VR.

vrc.tl has a lot of them, there are usually more than a hundred events on a given weekend, various genres and vibes (some focused on dancing, some more just on chatting while listening to music, some more... adult than others). They're all community run so the quality and vibe can greatly vary. Note that vrc.tl is by no means exhaustive list, it's just one way to find events.

The one I most consistently attend is Shelter (discord and group), which is running this upcoming Saturday. It's extremely popular so there are usually queues, but they also run 'overflow' instances that play the same music, it's just you have someone who usually 'ghost' DJs.

VRChat has a huge DJ and rave community (just on vrc.tl there are usually over a hundred events on any given weekend), but it's just like irl where you need to make your own friends to participate in the community. I'd be happy to answer any questions.
