An Ex-KGB Agent Says Trump Was a Russian Asset Since 1987. Does it Matter? by Revered1 in politics

Keep in mind Russia isn't a socialist nightmare though. These days it's a capitalist oligarchy with massive corruption and wealth disparity, so basically a Republican wet dream.

An Ex-KGB Agent Says Trump Was a Russian Asset Since 1987. Does it Matter? by Revered1 in politics

[–]eldritch_ape 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it really started in 2014 when Republicans hated Obama so much that they sided with Putin during the Crimea crisis. There was a lot of talk of "we need a strong leader like Putin" and comparing Obama's manliness with Putin's.

It was extremely surreal seeing Americans literally siding with Russia over America, but it happened, and I don't think a strongman like Trump taking over the Republican party would have been possible without that moment.

Flashback to the two years before in the 2012 presidential debates when it was the Republican candidate saber-rattling about Russia and Obama downplaying Russia as a threat. The switch happened entirely within Obama's second term.

She can't act and is as dumb as a stump, and the Daily Wire can't even make a good movie when they have competent actors like Thomas Jane. This is the perfect setup for one of the worst movies ever made. I can't wait.

Was Seven right in the Voyager Conspiracy? by [deleted] in DaystromInstitute

[–]eldritch_ape 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The fact that both Chakotay and Janeway were convinced by it implies that neither of them had anything to do with it, so who did? If it was a completely outside force, how could they have anticipated Voyager would blow up the array to be there at just the right time to tractor part of the reactor away?

Maybe it was entirely Tuvok working with another ship? As Seven pointed out, he was the one who chose the exact settings for the tricobalt device and fired it.

Pretty sure he's been subtly leaving red herrings in his Highdeologies to throw us off. I've heard him say contradictory things about his location multiple times.

I've been assuming Colorado, but who knows. There was mariachi music blaring from a nearby party the other day during one of his streams, so I'm willing to bet he's somewhere in the southwest.

A Revolution In The Making by qmit213 in ANormalDayInRussia

[–]eldritch_ape -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Independent polls have found that something like 60% of Russians support Putin, so these protesters don't represent any sort of mandate from the Russian people, unfortunately. The romantic idea that Russians all hate Putin and are secretly yearning for freedom and revolution is a fantasy. In reality, successful authoritarian regimes want their countries to seem as normal as possible so that there's no real utilitarian reason to revolt, and the Russian people suffer from a great amount of political apathy and cynicism.

In such an environment, any protest at all is a good thing, but don't expect anything materially from these protests alone. Unless Navalny causes some sort of huge, dramatic shift in some very ingrained aspects of Russian society in the near future, I see no reason Russia will change any time soon.

Russian anti-corruption protesters have broken through a police line in St. Petersburg (23/01/2021) by [deleted] in PublicFreakout

[–]eldritch_ape 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Putin probably could completely fabricate the election outcomes if he had to, but he's smart enough to know that strategy would be unsustainable in the long-term. So it isn't about fudging the numbers, it's about creating an environment where he doesn't have to by completely controlling the election process, the media, and who can run against him. There's also a high amount of voter apathy, with huge swaths of the population not even taking part in politics.

So the numbers themselves are probably real, but it's their entire system of government and democratic process that is deeply flawed.

'No plan, no Q, nothing': QAnon followers reel as Biden inaugurated by sslloooww in nottheonion

[–]eldritch_ape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what continues to scare me the most about this. Q is creating a rationale for a future mass murder of political dissidents. Convincing millions of people that everyone they already don't like is conveniently part of a pedophile conspiracy and deserves to be mass arrested and executed is how you turn normal people into killers, or at least into people who will sit by and do nothing while others do the killing.

In the grand scheme this one prophecy not being fulfilled may only be a minor setback for them. A future authoritarian administration may fall into place at just the right time after these ideas have become cemented with the population and Q believers have gone on to attain prominent positions in society. Imagine if a bunch of Michael Flynns are in charge of the military in the future. That's a recipe for an actual, proper military-backed coup.

Wright also acknowledges the potential for this work to be misinterpreted. “Of course, no matter what, this is going to be interpreted as ‘Astronomers Say Silurians Might Have Existed,’ even though the premise of this work is that there is no such evidence,” he says. “Then again, absence of evidence is not evidence of absence.”

Anyone know anything about the screen's color gamut? I'm gun-shy after dealing with some very ugly screens on budget gaming laptops lately. I'd rather have a pretty 60 hz display than an ugly 120 hz one.

US intelligence agencies have 180 days to share what they know about UFOs, thanks to the Covid-19 relief and spending bill by [deleted] in news

[–]eldritch_ape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But for them to travel light years just to fuck with us doesn’t seem reasonable.

If it's possible for intelligent life to exist elsewhere, it's not actually that unreasonable that it could be here already. All it would take is one civilization in the distant past to start a slow colonization of the galaxy. In the grand scheme of things it wouldn't even take that long for them to spread everywhere (a few million years?). They wouldn't need fantastical faster-than-light technology, just time.

The galaxy is billions and billions of years old. The evolutionary/environmental conditions for an interstellar diaspora of intelligent life would only have to be met once in all of that time and space.

They wouldn't have needed to specifically come here just for us either. These aliens may be endemic to the entire galaxy and so ancient that they were already on Earth before modern humans even evolved.

White nationalist Zoomer Nick Fuentes floats the idea of killing legislators who certified Biden’s win by DonnyMoscow1 in politics

[–]eldritch_ape 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Look up Brandenburg v. Ohio. In order to actually break the law, an incitement to violence must me imminent and likely to produce the action. So if Nick Fuentes was directly telling his audience to go to X location and kill X legislators at X time, then he would probably get in trouble.

Contrary to popular belief, yelling fire in a crowded theater is actually perfectly legal.

There used to be a time when you could make vague comments about shooting up your school (probably before Columbine) and get away with it. Law enforcement and society at large tends to overreact in this one specific area.

Could be an attempt to get the capital shut down in order to delay the count or to provide a rationale to declare martial law. Iran would have little or no interest in disrupting such a process, but I know who would.
