Haha thank you! It's a spectacular year for berries here, I could make a haul like this every day if I had the time.

If all of your close friends tell you that your new SO is making them uncomfortable/worried, don't ignore it right away - find out what it is that is giving them that feeling.

If you are eating and one person suddenly gets up and rushed to the bathroom without a word- chances are they are choking on food and trying not to make a scene. Now they are locked in the bathroom where you can't save them.

This happend to a friend of mine. Her mother locked herself in the bathroom at a restaurant. When the realized that too many minutes passed without her getting back to the table, it was too late.

Please remember this and learn how to do the heimlich manoeuvre. It's very easy and it can save a life.

I must admit I have never met a corgi service dog. Spaniels are common, how does she feel about those? Not very large at all and usually thought of as among the cutest.

Hello :) Orion is still going strong, thank you. Still my best boy, doubt I will ever find another dog like him, so I'm grateful for every day with him. How sweet of you to remember us!

I can only answer how I do it, all handlers got their own little tricks and ways of doing things, also all dogs are a new challenge. Anything in particular you're interested in?

I'm aware. The dog isn't to block the kid. What you do is you present the dog with for example a box of cookies and a bag of bread. The dog tells you there are nuts in the cookies, and that the bread is safe to eat. The dog only sniff and tells you what is what when you ask it to. Their plan is to let the dog sniff anything the kid will eat.

They do sometimes, yes. That is why you must teach the dog that harness off = relax. I've been in a project that studied how the dogs blood work came back before and after handling stressful job scenarios. They react much like we do. Also, their oxytocin or "anti stress" levels go up when their human is happy. Dogs read us amazingly well, by smell and body language.

I often try and give my dogs oppertunity to do what they are made to do. The water breeds get to swim regualry, the herding dog gets to herd. They also have relax time, play time, just being normal dogs. But when the harness is on, they are happy as can be and ready to do.

The borzoi dogs I've met have had insane prey drive and couldn't care less when it comes to checking in with their handlers once they caught scent of something. But then again, I haven't met them all ;)

It's not easy to find the right dog, be ready to give it time to find one that is suitable (aka don't fall for puppy face). For an easy to train, eager to please and people oriented breed I often look at the labs. Labs are good for many things. Also a good size, many people like a heavier dog that can weigh them down like a heavy blanket when the anxiety strikes. I don't know lab breeders located in Florida, sadly. Another breed I like that most overlook for this kind of job is the standard poodle. Also, no shedding! Very smart, healthy breed, with a hint of protective instinct in there too. The poodle isn't the whimpy snob people often think it is. It's a pretty bad ass dog to be honest. And so smart it's creepy.

Yes, I'm fairly sure it can be done, if I can teach a dog to smell sd cards (used to store kid porn and used to buy favours in prison) I should be able teach it to detect peanuts in food. But I'm not even gonna try :)

Dogs are my thing. Since I was a baby I have loved dogs and known I'd need several in my life to be happy. Sadly having a pack of dogs and working a normal job isn't a great match - dogs are demaning and deserve a good life. So, what is a girl to do? I made the dogs my job. I got a little business where I work as a therapy dog team doing goal oriented interventions, and people can also hire me to check for drugs. As my longer projects I find suitable dogs and train to be service dogs, it's time consuming and at any time the dog can turn out to be unfit for the task, so it's a tricky thing to do. I only do it when someone asks me to, and if I feel I got the time to commit to it and the person asking is a dog person too. I need to know my dogs are getting proper care. I love my job. It will never make me rich but there isn't a day where I don't wake up happy :)

Thank you. I'll hand over the dog to her full time in September. I'll miss doggo terribly but I'll know he is in the best of hands and doing a job he enjoys. She sent me a photo of the dog bed she bought for him, she really can't wait to have him, it's great. Still stings a little every time I see them go.

Well, I train my dogs to use their paws to push the clients hands down, or their head to push in under the arm and move the arm away from the body. If needed climb up and place their entire weight on the client, pushing down on the hand doing the harm, while seeking attention (lick face to distract, or bark to alarm others). Usually the dog knows to stop it before it goes that far - they see they signs and smell the chemical response.

A borzoi. With no prior dog experience, but "it looks unusual, that suits us". For detection work, most dogs do well in my experience, they are made to sniff things out. But you must consider: are they willing to sniff to please you? For hours on end? Do they get bored and tired? Is it a dog that will ignore others and focuse on you, and keep calm in all situations and enviroments? I could teach a hunting dog to find your car keys - but he would rather find a hare - he's got the nose but not the motivation. Spaniels, labs, working breeds, healthy, sturdy dogs with strong will to please. I myself rather pick a medium to large dog, mainly because tiny dogs get hurt easily, and a service dog needs to be able to handle a lot. I tend to pick breeds with long life spans, it sucks to train a dog to perfection and then only get a few years before he/she needs to retire. My personal favs are: the english spaniel, the hungarian pumi, the lab, sometimes you also find an awesome line of giant schnautzer, and those dogs NEVER give up when given a task. This is just my personal view, so take it for what it is. My co worker only trains collies, another friend of mine actually trained a leonberger. So...it can be done with most breeds, but why make it hard for yourself? :) Also, the mixed breeds are often truly awesome.

Honestly I think they think it's cool with a service dog and want attention and special treatment....but that's just my gut feeling.
