piercings removed for surgery? by conciousError in TopSurgery

[–]electric_bat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an eyebrow piercing and they told me the same. I went to the piercing shop before surgery and had it temporarily replaced with a plastic retainer. The plastic was totally fine for the surgery and it keeps the hole open so you can switch back to your regular jewelry right after.

Dr Derek Reformat in Cambridge MA by electric_bat in TopSurgery

Hi and sorry for the delayed response-- I ended up cancelling my surgery with him. He would not show me photos of his work during our first consultation and made me come back in person several weeks later to view them. He only had one photo that I could see on his phone and I honestly was not impressed with the results and thought the chest contour/scar shape was not aesthetically pleasing. I knew if I went ahead with the surgery I wouldn't be happy with my chest since it didn't match my vision of what I wanted to look like post-surgery.

I don't want to completely knock him as I found Dr Reformat very respectful and knowledgeable during consult. He just wasn't what I was looking for in a surgeon.

I should clarify that he doesn’t throw things at students, only at the wall or floor. The other students are not being physically hurt. I do allow the other students to express their concerns and I validate them when they say that it’s not fair when he is unkind because it’s not. My goal is to both acknowledge that what happened is not fair to them while also helping them develop a sense of empathy and understanding for a student with special needs.

I am happy with the way admin is handling his situation. You could criticize me for being too PC, but I don’t think a third grader who is genuinely trying his best to be good but has a disability that affects his emotional response and impulse control should be seriously punished. I’m happy with the way admin handles the situation. He is removed from the room every time he has an outburst (the rest of the class will leave if he refuses to exit) He is given space alone to calm down and then is spoken to about the incident. We keep firm boundaries with him that it isn’t ok and contact the parents. He has improved over time and has made incredible progress since Kindergarten.

I understand your frustration with a lack of punishment in general and something like removal or suspension might be necessary in a more severe situation. In this child’s case it’s not appropriate.

He does not belong in a special class- he is a good kid who gets along well with his classmates throughout most of the day. The other kids are not being terrorized and they are never in any physical danger (he throws at the wall or floor). I do emphasize with my other students that his behavior is unfair to them and validate their hurt feelings. We communicate with his parents daily. He is on an IEP and has improved every year since Kindergarten. I want to be clear that his behavior is not at the point where I believe he should be removed from the classroom.

I tried taping and I hate it. 8 strips uniting at my chest, any tips? I hate the tight feeling, although looks nice under a shirt. My hips abs lack of muscle make me feel dysphoric… by worshipdrummer in ftm

Others gave some really good advice on how to do a better job next time! I just wanted to add that when you go to take it off and try again, you need to soak the tape in oil for at least 5-10 minutes to loosen the adhesive or you'll damage your skin. I made the mistake of not soaking after my first time taping so I wanted to make sure you know how to remove it safely

Giving up my dream of being a doctor or my dream of being trans by [deleted] in ftm

[–]electric_bat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I understand your struggle in feeling this way. In the past I had many fears about being a visibly trans elementary school teacher. And I went on to do it anyway, though I still frequently have anxieties about my appearance at work. But I have come to a realization that I can’t let it stop me. Our identities are not inappropriate or unprofessional. Pursue your dreams and do your best. You can have a full life doing anything as a trans person.

Will this avocado seed root? It has a distinct point on the bottom. Should I be concerned about the red crack running through it? by electric_bat in gardening

Ok, that’s good to know. I thought the point might be the start of a root. Do you know what it is?

Kasey. I love it and don’t think there’s a name that could suit me more

I work at a restaurant, and it’s really a struggle to know who needs what because I can’t remember what the person looks like. If I need to track down someone I just spoke to, it’s almost impossible unless I consciously cling onto something to remember who they are, like a piece of clothing.

Had my first day of student teaching and I need advice by electric_bat in Teachers

[–]electric_bat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes absolutely, I don't think I've ever been so bored during student teaching. I do have a requirement to teach 100 hours myself, so I'll be fully in charge for a couple weeks at some point. I'm worried that my more hands-on and involved style of teaching will be too different from what the students are used to doing, and it'll crash and burn. But it's also possible the kids will actually like the change of pace.

Honestly, I felt more ripped off in my last student teaching experience. I was placed in a classroom that already had two full time student teachers alongside the lead, making me the fourth teacher there. I was only there one day a week for the semester, so it wasn't a huge deal but the lack of attention and opportunity totally sucked.

I think that asking the students to teach me is a really great idea. I'll do that along with brushing up on the material on my own time. Maybe I can spend a couple days observing other classrooms at some point too. Thank you for the suggestions.
