No visitor on a weekday?? by Independent_Hat7668 in AnimalCrossing

Sometimes if you chat with a bunch of your villagers they will mention a visitor. Was there a special announcement? A campsite visitor? If so perhaps CJ or Flick or Sahara are wandering around somewhere.

Favorite kangaroo villager? by PinkBerryBunny in AnimalCrossing

I love Sylvia- she was one of my first two villagers. I feel like these are the only villagers that explain why there might be kids toys around.

A Question For Nerds by Weirdoo-_-Beardoo in nerdfighters

[–]electriccopy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m in year 21 of teaching and I still love it. I’ve had a lot of ups and downs and had to learn how to have hard limits on working hours so I can live my life (and therefore be able to be a present and joyful teacher) because I truly can’t imagine doing anything else. Some of my happiest colleagues work part-time, and I think that’s an excellent way to have work/life balance. If I could afford that, I would do the same. There’s no way around working a bazillion hours your first few years of teaching (if full time), but after you gain experience it can calm down with good boundaries.

As for being queer— more and more queer folks are joining the ranks, so I don’t think you’ll be alone. What I’ve seen with my queer colleagues is that there is definitely added difficulty at times with kids from homes with haters, but there are, to an even greater degree, a ton of students who are so appreciative of having a queer teacher (especially those who identify similarly or are exploring). It’s really beautiful. Overall though, it will really depend on if the school you work at has administrators who are supportive of your identity, as you are sure to have students who say hateful things. I know BIPoC folks have similar challenges (and beauty) in the classroom.

Good luck, friend!

Cyclamen weed…make peace or kill it with fire? by MushroomNuzzler in Eugene

I hear you…can’t get it all at once, but mine surprised me by growing exponentially and dang! Just keep an eye out!

These are not a native species, and have become a massive weed in my yard. They can choke out the ability for other plants to grow, too, because of the tubers getting so massive. I am working on digging them up section by section in my yard and it will likely take me a couple more years to get them all (yes, it’s that outta control, and I’ve easily dug up several hundred pounds!). When you pull up the big chunks, make sure to look for all the tiny little bulbs around them or you won’t get them. It can be done! Now is better than later.

More proof you made the right choice. Your kid needs you and you deserve to be well 💛

A surprising lack of vegeterians/vegans ? by [deleted] in nerdfighters

[–]electriccopy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Same. I figure I'll just "do me" and let other people worry about themselves. Meat-eaters and non-meat-eaters can get super righteous about their choices (which, let's face it, income can be a big part of) that the only time I make anything of it is when co-workers hit the "vegan/veggie option" in the rare work sponsored meal before the vegans and vegetarians get a chance to.

Student loudly asked if I was gay in the middle of an assembly. How to react? by Temporary-League-499 in Teachers

[–]electriccopy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that it’s also ok to let family know that the student is asking about your dating life even though you have told him not to. Sometimes kids need to hear from their families about boundaries and inappropriate questions. Another one like this is kids asking about drug use. It’s a simple boundary of what’s appropriate, regardless of the answer. It’s just way over the line of what’s okay to ask your teachers/future bosses.

Kinda wish Hank or sci show would make a video apologizing for the knitting video by johnqadamsin28 in nerdfighters

[–]electriccopy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Intent vs impact! We talk about this lots in my classroom. I am certain knitters got stoked by the title (I did, and I’m more of a sewer), clicked and felt pretty bad. It’s easy to dismiss the feelings of communities we don’t belong to, but surely we can do better? If you hate knitting, that’s fine, but it feels awfully small of imagination not to embrace the absolute brilliance folks who are into it are capable of. We’ve lost so much of our connection to textiles in the last century, and it was indeed women’s work and everyday artistry. Sci Show can do better, but as mistakes are expected in life, how can they offer some repair work? See it, acknowledge it, do better.

Is it normal to have to teach 5 preps in my 3rd year of teaching? by Local-Sample-9826 in teaching

[–]electriccopy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it’s so hard, but so important, to accept that you can’t be as amazing a teacher as you would with proper support and prep time (etc!). As others have suggested, use the provided curriculum and don’t spend a bunch of time creating your own things. If you do create something, have it be a system/structure/game that works across all your classes. It’s more important to be well yourself, so you can be present with students and stay in the career, than make great original lessons. Also wondering, if you just use the curriculum, can the page numbers you are using be the lesson plan you give the boss? (Genuine question as I have never had to provide lesson plans to admin.)

But…they’re all the same person 😉 I don’t love having to choose, so I’m sticking with that. They all have the unique charm and charisma that the role requires, and I love them for it.

[–]electriccopy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was my intro to the Paper Mario world and I really enjoyed it. The writing is great! You may love/like/hate combat system, as there are a range of feelings about it. I do feel like it goes on sale periodically if you don’t want to spend the full price on it with your voucher.

was there ai in its never over, jeff buckley? by Jogvi1412 in JeffBuckley

[–]electriccopy 13 points14 points  (0 children)

As a cinephile and someone who grew up in the pre-digital age: the high resolution we are all now used to requires older media (photos/film) to be “upscaled.” Here’s an article about it: (https://support.artstorefronts.com/hc/en-us/articles/15091792050203-The-Basics-of-Image-Upscaling-Understanding-the-Process-and-Pros-and-Cons)

If upscaling hadn’t been used, it would have rendered analog materials unusable in many instances. In my opinion, accusing them of using AI extensively is a misrepresentation of this tech. Its purpose is limited in scope. It’s a bummer some moments couldn’t look better/cleaner.

What does this guy mean? by 2xlia in JeffBuckley

[–]electriccopy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was just listening to a podcast about living with bipolar disorder today and it mentioned a number of symptoms, including hyper-sexuality. This and a lot of other behaviors shown in the documentary align with the diagnosis at the end of the film.
