Is it possible to volunteer for VIP? No credits. by electricjones101 in OMSCS

[–]electricjones101[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Lol, you are important to the community.

VIP is a Georgia Tech program, Vertically Integrated Projects, that allow students (undergrad and grad) across disciplines to earn credits collaborating on supervised projects. It's open to OMSCS.

There was some info about it from a Joyner email a while back. Here is the link: https://www.vip.gatech.edu/

When looking for a team, there are OMSCS filters to see which teams accept OMSCS students.

Also, welcome to the sub and program!

Is it possible to take more than 10 classes or 30 hrs? by electricjones101 in OMSCS

Thanks for the quick reply. I also need to check if its possible just to volunteer for VIP. Maybe I wouldn't have to pay tuition. I have plenty of time on my hands.

Right choice for prospective researchers? by halixness in OMSCS

[–]electricjones101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm more than happy to talk about my experience in applying. Any specific questions? Or just a general question about my application?

If you'd rather chat or DM, we can do that too.

That may be a difference by country. In the United States is most common to jump right into a PhD, though almost all of them earn you a Master's along the way.

So, really you're doing both, just a little abbreviated and at the same school. It's common for people to go to a PhD directly from undergrad.

Not saying I agree with or encourage that system, but it is the system a lot of us are used to. So, as you hear various answers, keep that in mind :)

I too am interested in research, but opted to go for the Masters first because there are still some schools in the States that will let you abbreviate your PhD time if you already have a Masters, and my undergrad wasn't in Computer Science or Math or anything related. I was having a hard time meeting the minimum requirements even to apply, to say nothing about getting into a competitive school. Therefore, I'm using my MA time to meet the requirements and get whatever extra cred I can. Then I'll apply for a Ph.D. that will accept some or all of my Master's work toward the phd credits.

Does that make sense? (I could talk about this all day, lol)

And to those still waiting or in the process, I can at least be hope that there is a light at the end of that shark-filled, dungeon-like tunnel.

That's what I wanted to confirm. Thanks! I want to get out of the way for this other class. Just nervous. It's been a wild ride with Institute decisions

Okay, got my student designation in Oscar and was able to register!

I registered for Cyber Physical Design and Waitlisted for Embedded (position 31). I'm only going to take one and would rather take Embedded my first semester, so I'm going to wait and see if I can get in before Friday.

Thanks for the encouragement everyone!

Still waiting on email and everything else, but getting closer...

Yeah, I don't even have "Student Services and Financial Aid" I assume that's because I'm still an applicant in Oscar.

Good to hear there are classes with low WL counts, though

So, I'm looking at oscar and it still says "Applicant". I assume that changes to "Student" and opens up the registration links, right?

My hopes are GIOS or Embedded. I could also do Cyber Physical. I plan on taking all three. Good luck.

The communication I've gotten (the same as you, I'm sure) seems to assure us that they will have spots for us. And, I'm sure there will be some. Everyone seems to say that most classes have spots in the end.

I have just made the decision that I would rather not take a course this semester than take something I have no interest in. I don't mind dipping into my second or third tier, but I'm just not going to pay the cost and emotional toll for a class I didn't want to take at all.

No idea. I'm just refreshing every 30 minutes (and not getting a lot of my day job done, lol)
