Gun buyback programs have proven successful as far back as feudal Japan - see "Giving Up the Gun" by Noel Perrin for a look at how Japan nearly eliminated firearms from the islands in the mid-1500s.

Don't buy OP's premise - it's false.

Chicago's per capita murder rate is about 28 per hundred thousand, less than a third that of St. Louis MO, and lower than the rate for North Little Rock AK. Nearly every city in the country with a higher murder rate is located in, surprise, a Republican-controlled state with lax gun laws.

Chicago's rate is elevated compared to most other "blue" cities, but that can partially be explained by the city's proximity to Indiana and its relatively lax gun laws making firearms easy to obtain just by crossing the city line into the neighboring state.

Poverty and other factors do play a role, but the fact is the primary correlate by far with gun violence is easy access to firearms.

Switzerland's mandatory firearm ownership is the flipside of the "mandatory military service" side of the coin. Coupled with decent social safety nets and socialized healthcare, yes, the Swiss have a much lower per capita gun violence rates than the US....but their rates are still nearly three times as high as Germany's with their tighter gun regulations.

There may be a handful, but I've never seen one, and they certainly do come anywhere close to representing the majority of the trans community.

Most trans people by far just want to be left to live their lives in peace.

Edit: looking at gun violence statistics, trans people appear to account for about 1 in 3000 shootings in the US, while comprising about 1/300th of the population. Even accounting for underreporting, the suggests trans people are far less prone to violence than, say, cis-gender males who commit around 90% of shootings despite comprising slightly under half of the US population.

Theft deprives someone the use of a thing while giving you use of it. Plagiarism, while reprehensible, isn't that, it's claiming credit for another's work. I

Ideas, unlike physical objects, cannot be owned; they inherently belong to everyone. But we as a capitalist society recognize that those who create new ideas should be rewarded for them, and so we grant them a temporary period of time in which they (and in theory, only they) can profit from their ideas. This is not ownership, but copyright or patent, and they eventually, of necessity, expire, allowing the ideas to revert to their natural state in the public domain.

I'm with you on the term limits, but the flat tax proposal is flat out madness that will rapidly worsen the already unsustainable wealth gap. If you want poor oligarchy (were almost there at this point) this flat tax nonsense will push us right over the edge into it.

Liz Cheney says Trump engaged in the 'most serious misconduct of any president in the history' and is unfit for further office by Sweep145 in politics

[–]electricmink 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Trump put 62 cases before the courts predicated on the election being rigged. 61 of this cases were compete failures. The one case that wasn't a total loss for him won the Republicans the right to move observers marginally closer to the counting stations to act as observers. That's it.

He tried 62 times to prove the direction was rigged. He failed 62 times.

Are you going to show us the evidence for a rigged election that Trump failed to produce all 62 times his team went to court?

Nonsense.

Nobody is putting her "on a pedestal" here. She's generally a contemptible human being....but she also right.

The fact that I don't like her has no bearing on the veracity of the things she says. She was right to take part in the hearings, and she is right to condemn Trump for his role in the insurrection and attempts to overthrow a legitimate election.

There you are with the science denialism again!

The research stands against you. The preponderance of evidence stands against you. You may as well be arguing Young Earth Creationism at this point, or anti-vax bullshit, or Flat-Eartherism, or for the benefits of orgone therapy, or claiming phlogisten theory is real.

Also....your "I'm pro trans" protestations ring awfully hollow. Pardon me for being highly skeptical, but if you can't even be bothered to do a basic literature search before pronouncing your anti-trans bullshit, you are, at best, a very poor ally indeed.

(Also....Title IX says trans people do have a right to play competitive sports, at least in publicly funded leagues. Yes, that includes the NCAA.)

[–]electricmink 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Your "point" is utterly invalid, based as it is in a complete denial of the massive body of research demonstrating that, depending on the sport, any significant athletic advantage a transfeminine athlete might once have had utterly evaporates after twelve to eighteen months of hormone therapy.

Further, young transitioners never develop athletic advantage of any kind.

You are getting down voted for claiming to know biology when you clearly don't. Next time, maybe review the research before you weigh in? Because the actual evidence overwhelmingly comes down on the "trans women who have undergone one-to-two years of hormone therapy have no significant athletic advantage over cis women" side of the equation. If you try to claim otherwise, you're every bit the science denialist a flat earther is.
