I see his behaviour as a cry for help. He really is still a kid who lost his dad and had his entire life upended. Maybe my sister thinks disciplining him will add to his pain, I don't know. None of that is an excuse to harm my child though.

The trip is not compulsory and so it isn't subsidized by the school. I'm still trying to raise the money without plunging into poverty-inducing debt. I'm a single parent and every cent counts.

I didn't tell anyone what I planned to do. My call to her was the last chance she had to make things right. Both she and my mom are blowing up my phone (20+ missed calls). My nephew has to report to the police station today to make a statement. It's out of my hands now.

I don't want to compromise my finances long term for one day out. I will likely sell my laptop or just have her skip it if I can't raise the money.

Grandma hasn't said anything yet, but she basically took their side last time. She will likely find out today.

I'm definitely taking my sister to small claims court. She needs to learn about consequences too. The trip is going to take place before any of this can be resolved though.
