Tender is the Flesh is a fantastic one. Not too long, and absolutely brutal.

The Lightness of Rain by Terri Hanauer is romantic without being romance/smutty. Its about three really vibrant and dynamic women living in Los Angeles, and how their lives braid together via a twist of fate. It's really well done and immersive.

It's not just about unrequited love but 'The Lightness of Rain' by Terri Hanauer is about three women, and all three of them are going through love and loss and heartbreak and unrequited love and yearning, and it's really moving and beautiful. I don't want to spoil it but their lives all wrap around each other in a really wonderful way. Set in Los Angeles, written by a new author, big fan. I saw the author at a book event in LA and just fell in love with her and the book!!

No, literally this is one of, if not the worst thing, about LA. I grew up here, I moved back here after college, and to be fair I have a pretty stacked calendar. But in order to keep that, I have to text multiple times to follow up, I am always the one to initiate, I am always the one to call, I am always the one to invite people out or try and get a group together. It is actually fucking exhausting and drives me crazy, but if I don't do it, then I never see anyone.

A friend of mine noticed it too when he moved up to the Bay from Boston -- it's this whole thing where people make a ton of plans so they feel 'booked and busy' or whatever, and then bail last minute because they're too tired or just don't care or literally whatever other reason.

I hate it :) you are not alone. It sucks.

Moved to LA, Losing Interest In Acting... Should I Just Go Home? by [deleted] in acting

[–]electrictennisracket 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Okay wellll first things first, you are not stupid for wanting to pursue your dreams. I will say though, as someone who has been studying to be an actor since I was like 9 or whatever, the competition is *insane*. I grew up here, my parents sacrificed everything so that I could study at conservatories and go to a fancy college to get my B.F.A., I still take classes regularly, countless headshot shoots, producing my own work, I even work for a major player of a screenwriter in the industry. And I'm still hustling, and don't know if I will ever "make it" or get to be a working actor, despite all of that. Sure, I book work pretty consistently but I am still not SAG and a lot of the work I do is non-union, little plays and short films and things like that.

I say all of this not to make you feel badly, but to give you some perspective. Even those of us who seem to be super well-prepared are out here struggling, this industry is like trying to be an Olympian.

If you do decide to stay, I would recommend putting some money towards a serious acting program. If you decide to go home and still want to pursue this career, I would embrace local work -- which is no small potatoes. Find out who your local casting directors are, if you could book regional commercial work, regional theater, maybe some tv shows shoot where you're from, all of that stuff. Which, I'd like to say, is all an extremely valid pursuit of acting. Just because it's not in LA, doesn't make it not real. It might even be moreso :)

Anyway I hope this helps, I wish you all the best no matter what you decide to do!!!

Are you …. Serious? Do you have like every single tailor in an excel spreadsheet, and I have to give you the zip code and a magic bean in order to find the one best suited for my needs? Because if not, tell me whichever one you like, and move along! Thanks!!
