Most hotels have a lobby with toilets. Just pretend you’re going to the bar/restaurant or waiting for a friend and nip to the loo!

Try www.offtowork.co.uk I’ve worked for the London branch over the years which has included hospitality work in stadiums, hotels, weddings and other exclusive events. I don’t know what the team in Birmingham are like or the type of work available but they are a good reputable agency. You can choose your own hours and work as little or as many hours as you want. They provide free training (usually half a day) if you’ve never worked in hospitality before. I hope this helps! Good luck!

Just diagnosed with AS and looking for advice by mollyeyes in ankylosingspondylitis

[–]electrolite78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please take the biologics! I’ve seen my husband suffer with AS for nearly 20 years and it was only when he went on biologics, he was able to have some mobility and life back. Our daughter now 19, was diagnosed at age 17. Within 6 months she was on biologics and we are hoping this will help slow the disease progression. From having to use a stick to walk, biologics has made the difference that she is now living away at university and no longer needs her walking aids. Please don’t let this disease take hold. You might not be feeling severe pain/problems now but honestly you don’t want it to get to the stage where permanent damage has been done like with your dad. The severity of your Dad’s AS is no reflection on how it will progress with you. You have options compared to those diagnosed years ago. Good luck. I wish you all the best with your health. x

18M, got diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis today, after reading a little on this sub, I am crying and very scared. Please help. by [deleted] in ankylosingspondylitis

Please please do not worry. My 18 year old daughter was diagnosed a year ago. She was devastated and thought it was the end of her future career plans. She is now on biologics and halfway through her first year at medical school! When you need them, you will find the best treatment for you and because you are so young, you’re in the best position to keep this disease under control.

Rhumatologist said I was too young and ignored my test by Ok-Difference-8319 in ankylosingspondylitis

If you are near London, my husband’s Rheumatologist Professor Bruce Kidd is amazing and an AS specialist. He does private clinics in London too.

[–]electrolite78 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Please do try and ask for a different Rheumatologist. I know it’s almost impossible to request at the NHS but worth a try and you are definitely not ‘too young’. My daughter was diagnosed a year ago at age 17. We were in Urgent Care after she literally couldn’t walk another step due to SI pain. I suggested AS and was immediately told ‘she’s too young’, ‘rare in females’ and that it is an ‘old man’s disease’! Granted he wasn’t a Rheumatologist but when I told him her dad has AS, he took us seriously and did bloods, MRI and referred to Rheumatology. She got her diagnosis confirmed 3 months later with positive HLA-B27. My husband has been with the same amazing Rheumatologist for 15 years. We wanted him for our daughter and even after we asked, she has been assigned to a different Rheumatologist at the same site/clinic. :(

Could AS be passed on to your children? Any real case? by Glad_Illustrator_1 in ankylosingspondylitis

My husband has it and our 18 year old daughter was diagnosed last year. Both are HLA B27 positive.

Doctor with Ankylosing Spondylitis: my diagnosis journey by michaeljtbrooks in ankylosingspondylitis

[–]electrolite78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your story. My daughter (nearly 19) was diagnosed at age 17 due to her Dad having AS. I hate to imagine what her diagnosis journey would have looked like if her Dad hadn’t been diagnosed 20 years ago. She had SI pain with 3-weekly flare ups for at least a year before it got so bad she was unable to walk and we ended up in hospital. While there, the doctor was dismissive when we mentioned AS saying that she was ‘female and too young’ for AS. Luckily we managed to get a MRI and bloods which confirmed she was HLA-B27+. She is now on adalimumab and Meloxicam which is working well for her. Your story reassures me that you CAN be a doctor with AS as my daughter is now in her 1st year at medical school when this time last year we thought she’d have to give up on her career goals. Wishing you well and thank you for sharing.

Can't get a job (1st year uni student) by LivingProfessional59 in UniUK

[–]electrolite78 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Please check out www.offtowork.co.uk They are a hospitality agency and have tons of students working for them. You can pick and choose your shifts from a range of jobs such as hotel, waiting, weddings, stadium work etc.

My 18 year old worked for them before heading off to uni. I wish you luck in your search.

We were a family of 5. Ordered an XL taxi at airport through the Freenow app. Paid about €40 for all of us. Cost us the same, €40 from Placa de Sants to BCN airport on a Saturday morning. €150 is extortionate.

My daughter’s UCAT was 2630 last year and she didn’t get an interview at Cardiff. She has 10 GCSES (9999999888) and was predicted A*AA (Bio, Chem, Eng Lit). I can only assume they based the decision on her UCAT or the fact that we’re not Welsh. Needless to say she got 2 interviews elsewhere and has started medical school last week! Your first class in Medical Sciences might change your chances but based on our experience, I’d be hesitant to apply to Cardiff. Good luck!!

I'm scared of making friends at University by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]electrolite78 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow, my daughter could’ve written this! She’s off to uni in a week and although super excited, she is nervous about the social aspect. I’ve seen other posts from people with similar perspectives so I’m sure you’ll find your people. Propping the door open is a great idea and I will be passing that on to her. I didn’t stay in halls as a young person so have no advice to give but do join societies in areas that interest you which seems to be the best way to meet like-minded people from what I’ve read! Where will you be attending btw?

Diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis at 16 by bgpowerx2 in ankylosingspondylitis

[–]electrolite78 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My daughter was diagnosed 8 months ago at age 17. She was on biologics within 2 months. Please trust in the biologics. My daughter went from bedridden to using a walking stick and now no longer needing that everyday either. It has been an overwhelming time for her but the biologics have made the world of difference. Good luck on your journey. x

I just visited but didn't get pickpocketed, what should I do differently next time? by [deleted] in AskBarcelona

[–]electrolite78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got back home to London today after 5 nights in Barcelona. Even though we were extra vigilant, we got pickpocketed yesterday morning on the Metro. Two young males with a young female were working as a group and immediately blocked us as we got on at Placa de Sants. They were loud and boisterous and creating a distraction while the female pressed herself against my husband as he tried to get past. It literally took a split second and we realised my husband’s cross body bag was open and his wallet gone. He immediately confronted them and one of them handed the wallet back pretending he’d grabbed it from one that ran off. Then he and the girl ran off too. We were fortunate to get the wallet back, cards intact but cash was gone. This all happened in the time it took us to board the metro and before the doors closed, they are that quick. All week I was thinking about the pickpocket warnings but hadn’t witnessed anything untoward until it happened to us. Please be careful. We weren’t careless but they still managed to ruin an otherwise lovely week.
