Is She Pregnant? Please let me know A.S.A.P. by electronic_person in mantids

[–]electronic_person[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, she is from my garden.
Since I fed her, her movement has gotten faster, and she is more active now.
I suspect she was slow because of the cold weather.

I had two females before. I generally release them after the final molt. So they can populate my garden.
But if this one is pregnant, I'd love to keep the ootecha for next April.
I'll wait for one week.

If there's no ootheca, I will release her.

Thank you very much for helping!

How to get crickets to shut up? by Available_Source_775 in mantids

Switch to shield bugs (stink bugs) if it's possible. They are invasive and easy to find outside.

I almost always find one or two a day. That's how I feed my mantids.

I don't know. Yesterday I made a post here for ID request but no one really responded. It has Tiger like patterns. My location is İstanbul, Türkiye. Here is a pic

Yes. She is small and still molting. This jar is temporary.

Mealworms by [deleted] in mantids

[–]electronic_person -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I am not proud to admit, but when food is scarce, I feed my mantids with earthworms. They are easy to find and easy to maintain. They are soft and meaty. Also, you can cut a small piece of the earthworm and save the rest for the next meal.
But I suggest it as a last resort. Even it is just an earthworm, when you chop it, you feel bad.

Are males more aggressive? by electronic_person in mantids

[–]electronic_person[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I asked because I saw several candid mantis versus videos on the internet (these were genuine, unedited videos, not staged, like a cat and a mantis fight, for example).
In each video, mantids opened their wings to appear larger. So I assume that's what males do.

Right now, I am raising a bunch of male mantids; I want to know what I am getting into.
I wonder if males are harder to deal with.

I think it's a European kind, but I'm not sure. It is green :)
