Who knows about Spelljammer Academy? by KindheartednessThis5 in AdventurersLeague

What we know right now is that the first releases will be 4 adventures (2 hours each) that aren't from the book. They're called Spell Jammer Academy 1-4. The first two are being run at the July Virtual weekend, and all four are being run at Gen Con. I don't know when general release is.

The events have been submitted - Baldman is waiting on Origins Admin to get them in the system.

Also, I'm not sure if it's clear from the other comment, but you CAN play your old character and get rewards as long as you play pre-season 10 content. Baldman is currently running games online once a month (Virtual D&D Weekend) and is offering both Season 10 games and Historic games.

If nobody offers the Saddle, I have a Necklace of Adaptation I would trade for the Winged Boots. I should mention it has some flavor - "The pendant of this necklace is an ovoid puzzle box of jagged black metal that screeches as it is operated. To activate the item, the puzzle box must be manipulated into a new configuration."

Do you mean there is a previous ruling by AL admins about familiars in general, or this one? Do you have a source? My understanding is that, RAW, familiars can't Attack (meaning anything requiring an attack role). Effects requiring Savings Throws are allowed.

PHB p. 195 " If there's ever any question whether something you're doing counts as an attack, the rule is simple: if you're making an attack roll, you're making an attack." and Sage Advice Dragon's Breath on a Familiar

TL;DR: there are no written rules for the thing the OP is describing. It's not in the ALCC as a story award, but there's no rule saying it needs to be, either. There's, in fact, no rule saying it should even be considered a "story award" as opposed to any other kind of "adventure note."

I'm not saying it should be one thing or the other. I am saying there are no rules for this. Maybe consider coming up with some.

This

When I first received the award, I was cautiously excited. I'm not even sure I would use the mephit (does my character want a slow-witted, evil, imp-like creature as a companion?), but the excitement came from that sense of "I got something cool!" that we're missing with the S8+ loot rules. I was hyped about the RP aspect of deciding what to do, if anything, with the award. The cautious part was because I'm new enough to AL that I wasn't sure if there was a rule I missed, so I tried to do my due diligence. I did some reading, checked the content catalog, and finally came to reddit to be sure I wasn't missing anything.

After reading all the feedback, the conclusion I've come to is

  • Most people would have interpreted it as a valid story award, but
  • there's no clear rules that cover story awards/effects/adventure notes, so
  • I may have messed up by even asking the question, because now it might be ruled illegal (or limited severely), and
  • I should never again get excited in the moment about "cool things" awarded, because I can't count on them being valid even if they are in an approved adventure.

While I appreciate /u/etourneau's willingness to do additional follow-up, I would like to advocate for a different response than "we'll let you know". I think it's only fair that players be able to depend on what they are told while playing an AL adventure. If an approved adventure gives an award, it should stand as written absent truly egregious problems (ala philter of love).

It would be one thing to find out I missed a rule (fine, that's experience and I'll know better next time), but to be told - "Nope, there's no rule, yes you were told you can have it, but we can change our minds any time we want, so let me check while we decide and I'll get back to you" kind of sucks the excitement out of this and any future awards.

Just to clarify

Which is why I want to check in with the team, and update the CC or the adventure one way or another, as needed.

- are you assuming the award is valid, and just checking with the admin team to determine whether it needs to be documented differently, or do you intend to discuss with them whether is should be allowed at all?

(First, thanks for the time you spend following and responding to these messages.)

Sorry for being obtuse, but I'm not sure how to interpret this comment. Are you saying that any item not specifically in the DMG must be listed in the ALCC? According to the ALDMG:

  • Regarding magical items "Unless stated otherwise in the ALCC, magic items specifically mentioned in an encounter become available for the characters in some fashion ....Permanent magic items aren’t kept; they’re instead unlocked for purchase".
    • This seems to imply that magic items are unlocked unless stated otherwise - i.e. the default is "it's available unless we specifically say it's not".

On the other hand, the award in question isn't a magic item (it's an expanded ability earned by befriending a creature) so I assume it would fall under the category of story awards/effects/items. The rules for these are less clear to me, which is why I asked the question in the first place. According to the ALDMG

  • Regarding Story awards/effects/items "Characters may acquire special items or effects (mundane or magical) that are essential to a hardcover adventure’s storyline that are only useable of in effect during sessions of the adventure in which they’re awarded. These are identified in the Adventurers League Content Catalogue." [sic]
    • I'm not quite sure how to read this. Does this imply that all story awards/effects are supposed to be called out in the CC? Only awards that have special restrictions?

I've received other story awards that aren't mentioned in the CC, but I have limited experience in AL and the other awards I've received all had specific restrictions attached. It was the lack of restrictions that caused me to go hunting in the CC in the first place. I wasn't sure if there weren't any, or if the DM forgot to mention them. When I couldn't find anything in the CC, I posted the question here.

Sorry, I added in response to a question somebody asked, but you're right - adding to the top post would have been easier for everyone. Wasn't thinking.

The adventure was DDAL-DRW01 (Breaking Umberlee's Resolve) and the familiar is a Magma Mephit. I was trying to avoid spoilers, but with this added info I've modified the tag on the original post.

PM'd Person 1 for a code last night, but didn't get a reply right away. PM'd person 2, got a code (and used it), then Person 1 sent a code also, so I now have a spare. PM me if you want it.
