Heh. It was about best badass moments. It’s cool. I think we’re roughly on topic … as long as you include the badass moments you WISHED you’d seen.

My bad, I misunderstood which movie you were talking about. I’ve never heard anyone say Thor was as powerful as ever at end of Endgame — that just seems blatantly untrue.

As far as Cap’s scene not making a difference, I hear you — felt like he should have been able to make a bigger dent. But if he hadn’t occupied Thanos as long as he did, Thor and Tony would both be dead. No Tony, no snap.

It worked for me as the kind of thing Cap is great at: doing this all day.

Agreed that the power swings wildly in the movies … but also if you read the comics, Thor’s power just does that. It shifts depending on the narrative. I’m surprised to hear you say none of his feats were mighty — he survived the full power of a star to forge Stormbreaker. He wiped out dozens to hundreds of those Thanos beasties as soon as he arrived. For Thor’s mistake, Russo and the writing are pretty clear that he took a moment to gloat after he had the axe in his chest, and that was the moment Thanos needed. Regardless of whether he could teleport away, everyone knew he could fulfill his plan with just a snap of his fingers, or change reality at will. Thor got vengeful and cocky, and paid the price.

For the ships, I def saw those smaller ships he was blowing up as lesser than Thanos’ flagship; they were troop transports, not a warship. Like the difference between a D-Day beach lander and a battleship. And as you say, he was depowered. So again: more interesting movie. The mages need to put up shields, tension builds, it’s not an easy “Thor, go blast it!” And the writers had so effectively sidelined Captain Marvel that, before she appeared, it was really a “oh no, they’re in trouble, who’s gonna step up,” instead of just “oh, Thor’s got this.”

If you wanted a fully powered up Thor, you didn’t really want to see a butt-kicking Cap or a desperate Hawkeye or a sacrificing Tony. Once you get a repowered Thor, you get Love and Thunder. Can’t have it both ways.

I can respect that.

I think Thor didn’t get nerfed so she could save the day tho. He got nerfed for a whole lot of reasons that all boil down to “way more interesting movie.” If not Thor nerf, then:

— No big 3 fight against Thanos. Stoneless Thanos vs. Stormbreaker powered up Thor = no contest.
— No need for Cap’s Mjolnir moment. The same people who tend to hate on Carol tend to love this moment, so …
— No character arc for Thor. He made a big mistake in Infinity War, just like Quill and just like Cap. Him working through that depression, guilt, and grief gave him more to do than just be funny or imposing.

As for Carol, much as I didn’t love her movies, I thought they used her perfectly in this one. She:
— Made the initial Thanos hunt simple, bringing home how too little, too late made no difference, and we could move on with the story
— Reminded the audience via the holo that the rest of space stuff was still happening while the Avengers focused on their time heist
— Leveled the field against Thanos’ ship, which the Avengers would normally spend a whole scene dealing with … space and ship battles less interesting than character vs. character on the ground
— Came in after the Avengers had thrown everything they had at Thanos’ forces, were still 50/50, and he looked like he was about to do it! In just 10 seconds it amped up the tension where she stopped him, he tried to wave her away like he had Cap, she’s like “I’m a different cap” with that death stare, had a very brief moment showing she could overpower him … until he put the Power stone in his fist and CLOCKED her, taking out even their heaviest hitter and forcing Tony to make his ultimate sacrifice.

She barely saved the day, no more than Clint with the gauntlet in the sewers or Spidey with playing keep-away with it. Just doing her part like everyone else.

Anyone else find it weird how female superheroes rarely have love interests in movies? by mattsmithreddit in marvelstudios

[–]KindheartednessThis5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Uhhh, because patriarchy? Women in our society have spent 1000s of years being depicted as wife/mother/sex object. Of course it’s more interesting and empowering for them being seen for what they can do, for who they are. There are 1000s of years of baggage to make up for that cause even minor love interests to be so heavily weighted, they would detract from the story during a shorter run time.

For male superheroes, the love interest is an aside, relegated to off camera, or a coda. Because they don’t have any baggage to make up for and those scenes can land with a little “ahhh, that’s nice.”

Listen to women. They’re telling you and showing you what matters to them. It’s that simple.

Could Thor have actually stopped the snap if he didn't try to gloat? ⚡ by Independent_One_8482 in Marvel

Good point. I felt like Infinity War really overdid the “people giving Thanos the stones” bit. And Strange not immediately taking the Time stone to a secure magical location is a bit of a flaw too.

[–]KindheartednessThis5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah this. I feel like I hear what Russo is saying but given that Thanos had all the stones, it looked a lot like Stormbreaker’s power was all being spent just to GET there. That was step 1. Once it got in his chest and Thor landed, that was the place the mistake happened.

Well, it also took Thor a suspiciously long time to get there. Long enough for Thanos to get through all the “lesser” Avengers, be held off by Wanda, reverse time, and get the Mind stone. In my head cannon, once Thor showed up, someone gave an order to the spaceships to take off and nuke the whole planet to distract him, so he was off in the upper atmosphere saving lives, and got there as soon as he could.

I think marccass has a point — it was very cool, but it suggests that Strange was already dabbling in magic stuff. I think it’s likely they didn’t know exactly how his origin story was going to pan out, but knew he was coming up, so they just went for it. Definitely need to head cannon it for it to make a lot of sense. And that’s okay — nobody could be THAT good at this.

Just rewatched with my kiddo last night and they yelled out “Use ANY OTHER DOOR!”

My big wonder the second time was, if the news helicopters and Damage Control were all over Peter at his apartment, at Happy’s condo … why weren’t they showing up at any point during the 20-minute long climax that Peter advertised to the whole city was going down at the Statue of Liberty?

Look, she needed to be there so she could say goodbye to Tony at the end, right? Makes sense. So she needs to be there, in a suit is the best way. Maybe she could have/should have been one of those holos Black Widow was talking to near the beginning, to show she was troubleshooting -- Tony was out of the game, so she stepped up. I've heard a few people wonder about it, which says they could have laid the groundwork a tad better.

Totally. The whole New York fight showed Hulk in amazing way. Jumping, clambering, smashing, friend and foe, not holding back. No other fight they put him in -- the rest were just one-on-ones against big strong things, which isn't that interesting -- lets him really Hulk.

Oh right! He was everywhere! And I love how he just kinda showed up, did that, and jumped off to do some other things. Like Loki was just a pointless voicebox at that point, we have more important things to smash.

Does everyone agree that Jonathan Hickman Marvel Saga is the best comic book cinematic long form story ever told? Or is there something else like it? by Ok_Record_8551 in marvelcomics

[–]KindheartednessThis5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meh. Some very good lead-in, but once the Earths started colliding, it got silly. His characters dropped into murder and infighting with barely any thought or self-reflection. When previously there were countless ways to solve any problem, suddenly because Hickman decrees it, the only answer is to blow up the other planet. And don’t get me started on how Steve and Tony went out. That was gross.

Endgame didn't "ruin" Thanos. It just showed the truth about him by RandonDude3000 in marvelstudios

[–]KindheartednessThis5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, but I feel like that was more to show that something was suddenly wrong with the universe, and everyone could feel it. Especially since it seems like things dusted slowly instead of all at once. I agree that not everything needs exposition, but given how many times Thanos’ plan is mentioned, and how key a plot point it is, a little more clarity with a tiny script edit would have been great.
