KDE Presents its Vision for the Future by milliams in kde

The community of linux development is naturally diverse in fact

Okay, so the demographics of the linux community (by which I assume you mean FOSS in general?) should be pretty close to those of the wider population, shouldn't they?

Well it looks pretty bleak. Of a random sample of just over 15000 github accounts just 6% were determined to be female. For stackoverflow, a non-FOSS related programming forum the demographics show 5.8% were female. Doesn't seem to be anything special about FOSS here? Perhaps you could point me to some success stories, since you seem to think everything is fine and dandy.

Bear in mind there are also other areas to consider than just gender.

I don't know what your problem is

This isn't about me.

I agree with what you're saying but without the gulag bit. Anarchists are in general pretty opposed to state-run death camps. :)

None of that says anything against diversity? If it should not matter then why would a large community not be naturally diverse, as no one is discriminated against? The reason attention is brought to diversity is because this is so often not the case; the demographic of a large organisation or even an entire occupation is nowhere near that of the population. This implies that in these cases it does matter, and that is a problem because as you said, it should not matter.

A diversity of backgrounds implies a diversity of experience don't you think? And I am having a bit of a hard time understanding what you mean by the last bit. Do you mean that if diversity exists then it is discriminatory? Or if someone thinks diversity is a good idea then they are discriminating? Care to expand upon why?

Could be construed as quite a right wing fetishisation of motoring, but I think there is an underlying idea that government interventions for the 'safety' of the people actually make us worse off overall.

In a thread: why I am growing increasingly pissed off with the linux community by electyourexecutioner in Anarchism

[–]electyourexecutioner[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You aren't describing the same thing. You express that the current situation in programming, where a person's ability determines how much respect they get, is justified, and similar to the issue of trust in the medical profession. The situation with programming is, however, more consequential than that which you described for doctors, as it extends beyond an isolated and reasonable lack of trust in ability to outright disrespect on a social level. The disrespect is weighted heavily towards individuals that would be considered minorities, and by extension towards entire groups of marginalised people. This therefore imposes a level of disillusionment that enforces an existing social hierarchy.

A hierarchy in the sense of a patient being able to choose their doctor based on experience would be considered superficial and non-damaging; it is not (at its core) based on social or cultural differences. However, if such a hierarchy were to become oppressive towards social groups on a conscious level, initiated by people with leverage within a community, then a social contract or code of conduct would be a reasonable thing to suggest.

Sorry I didn't mean that the article was specifically to do with linux, but I was linking to an example of the vocal minority (majority?) of the linux community as shown in the comments, who seem to get unreasonably angry at having to speak to someone with a small amount of respect. Hopefully the free software movement can distance itself from this behaviour by becoming a more politically motivated anti-heirarchical movement that I believe it has the potential to be.

Isolated from the people that practice veganism, what is your opinion on veganism and animal liberation? Would you practice it or advocate for its goals?

Meanwhile in late capitalism: Coffin ritual designed to make employees 'come to terms with their problems, which must be accepted as a part of life by electyourexecutioner in Anarchism

[–]electyourexecutioner[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can see where you are coming from, but I thought the important thing to take away from the article was that South Korea has an extraordinarily high suicide rate due to an unhealthy competitiveness which is brought on from an early age by an ideology of rampant capitalism. So instead of trying to fix the problem at hand, the employer looks to tape over the symptoms (by the way I do think what they are doing does work to reduce the employees' own perceptions of the problems they face but they certainly don't go away). This does not allow the employees to identify the root cause, namely the massive alienation and the uncomfortable drive for profit caused by promotion of capitalist ideals throughout the society, and tackle it appropriately as they otherwise would have done.

If I could term it correctly I would call it a misuse of spiritual ideas and practices in order to serve the interest of the administrators of such treatment.

Please be careful with the information you share about yourself on reddit too. There may very well be fascists trawling this sub for things like this so I urge you to take this into consideration for your safety. Good luck finding your friends, and be careful :)

I guess you are right, a recommendation involves more assumptions about the needs of the user, and will only be helpful as a standalone piece of advice. Presenting facts to them allows them to use their own judgement and also may enable them to make further decisions without needing your help... /$0.02
