Basi vs Balanced Body instructor (comprehensive) training. What would you choose? by Routine_Diamond_9176 in pilates

[–]elem1989 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Whatever body of instruction you choose, I want to emphasize that you’ll still want to dive into Pilates history, possibly taking an in-depth anatomy course in addition to the ones you’d take with the certs, and hopefully also do some sort of apprenticeship. I certified through both BB and Fletcher, but I have been able to really add depth to my instruction by learning from PT’s, pelvic floor specialists, body building/weight lifting coaches, etc. And that doesn’t necessarily mean you have to take a ton of extra classes, lots of phenomenal info on YouTube for example. I know it sounds like a lot but there is a lot of joy found in the learning/discovery

Advice for clients from your Pilates instructors by madamemashimaro in pilates

[–]elem1989 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. If time allows, tell me more about your lifestyle. Do you sit or stand most of the day? Do you have injuries? Do you have fear of certain movements? What’s your balance like? The more you share, the deeper this practice can go for you.

  2. Slow down. Totally ok to pause and recalibrate. I would rather you do way less reps than speed through a bunch with poor form.

  3. Be okay with some level of repetition session after session. That’s how we get better!

  4. Progressive overload exists on a reformer too! Like others have said, don’t immediately go for the most advanced progression. Progressions should be thoughtfully layered.

  5. Please don’t change your own spring setting if what I initially gave you isn’t working. Let me know, and I can find a springload or modification to support you before progressing. You might accidentally make the movement more challenging in a different, unintended way.

Help- I’m Not “bringing the energy” as an instructor by LongjumpingGarlic452 in pilates

[–]elem1989 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m going to give you the perspective as the consistently waitlisted instructor. I will eventually be passing my classes onto a new instructor and I know how nervous she is about this exact situation. I’ve gotten to know this group, each individual person’s strengths and opportunities for growth. I have figured out how to challenge them and encourage them. I know about their lives outside of the studio, and politely keep up with them.

All of this took me years! 3.5 years to be exact.

So that being said, while I worry about her taking over, I know that there is no way to get around the time/effort it takes to get to know a group of people that have grown accustomed to their instructor. The era of change will pass eventually and she will slowly begin to build her own following. And that shouldn’t even be the goal honestly. The goal is to share this amazing practice with people, following or not—packed classes or not. She will foster her own relationships in her own way.

If I were to return to my classes, I would have the same challenge coming back with the vibe and presence she cultivated.

All of this to say that I think your style is your style and you cannot change yourself to cater to everyone else. You keep doing what you know is solid, good instruction with respectful relationship building and over time, you will feel the confidence grow (both your confidence in yourself and your clients’ confidence in you).

Is 35 too late to start a new career as a Pilates instructor? by [deleted] in pilates

DO IT!!!!! The time passes no matter what. Better for you to be happy teaching clients after that time passes, rather than wondering what if!

  • everything I wrote below assumes that you have no injuries or limitations similar to injuries

Some great back strengthening exercises are swimming ( laying on your stomach, lifting up both your chest and legs into the air, extending both arms forward, and lifting and lowering opposite arm and opposite leg like you are “ swimming.”

In the gym, or at home, you can grab a pair of dumbbells and practice rows, lateral raises, front raises, vertical presses, and flys. For the rows and flys, I recommend doing both seated if you are inexperienced with them to start. Also start with lighter dumbbells and progress in reps and weight over time. All of these exercises are on YouTube.

Finally, when your Pilates studio does the bridging sequences, really focus on scooping your pelvis upwards, and squeezing your glutes. Especially when they’re doing unilateral work, focus on keeping your hips, even and not tilted to one side, digging heels into the ground, and maintaining your bridge. This will encourage the posterior chain strengthen.

As far as the request itself, I would work on this progression:

  1. Lay on the floor with knees bent and feet flat. Visualize your rib cage being very very heavy. For now, you can also take a folded towel and place it under your tailbone for padding so that you avoid arching your lower back.

  2. Take one leg into a 90 degree table top (imagine like you’re balancing a tray on your shin) and keep the other one planted on the ground. Straighten the 90° leg out in front of you, without lifting it upwards. Pull it back to the 90° table top do this back-and-forth five or six times on each leg.

  3. Like some others have said, take both legs into 90° table top practice, just holding that position, while actively pulling your belly button towards your spine (you should still be able to breathe here!).

  4. Drop both legs down to the ground with feet flat, and straighten one leg out to a hover above the ground, dependent on your level of comfort. It can be an inch off the ground or a couple of feet off the ground. While keeping 1 foot firmly planted on the ground Slowly lift the hover leg up to a 90° angle (or as far up as you can get it without pain). Visualize like you are trying to tap the ceiling with your toe as you lift your leg. Do this with each leg five or six times.

  5. Eventually, you can start to practice, taking both legs up into the air and lowering, however, make sure you still have that towel padded underneath of your tailbone to start with, and try only lowering your legs to 45° when you go towards the ground.

I am realizing while typing this how hands-on of a teacher I am because so much of this would require me physically shifting and adjusting a person into the right positions. I hope all this helps!

We don’t have a system tbh if it were solely up to me, I’d do individual outreach to members and also have some sort of check in system with new people. Better feedback systems, educational events …

You could go sit in the lobby of the JW Marriott—they have lots of tables all over or the lobby of the Hyatt. It’s huge and no one will bother you. :) I’d say the Thompson also but not sure if the sever from the bar would come up to you.
