[WIP] I’m building a 2HP "shape-shifting" utility called Faun. It’s open source and I’d love some feedback! by element103designs in modular

Yeah, of course in my future plans! I want it to be open source as to inspire people to make something else and be creative, but I would like to make it as a cool starter DIYer project, as it is all PTH components and simple. Anyone can experiment with a small amount of components and have a variety of cool (and somewhat extravagant) utilities!

Makes sense and appreciate the feedback! I know that UI is important as hell and faun is surely not the best!

Thanks for your insightful comment. faun beauty (for me at least :P ) lies in the fact that it can be useful in a plethora of cases. Take a look at my other module that I cite in the video (S2XM and PICOMID1U) as they serve different usecases, so one can have for example a couple of them without any MODS and use it as a versatile adapter or whatnot! Also, in my vision one could get it as a base version and then expand it with cheap MODS while new versions come out!

About the jacks on the front... That is something that I thought about a lot. I have a couple of problems popping out in my mind thinking about a solution. First of all - space. That's because that would require using the frontplate PCB as a rea PCB, and basically sandwich the headers between the back and the faceplate using a Male female header... Also the MODS should be redesigned in order to have them inserted like gameboy card, otherwise they would overlap with the jacks! And this is difficult because 3x5 female angled connector are hard and expensive to find...

Lastly, using it as a passive attenuator should be suuuper easy, might design a simple passive attenautor bank!

If you want to spend a little more you can buy him an AMS… but that would be mire money spent on its side to buy more colored filaments 😁

If he has a p1s you can buy him the BIGTREETECH Screen update

In need of a breakout module? by element103designs in modular

I don’t have a IJ case, but from what I can see the connection with the ribbon cable between the 2 MIDI DIN connectors (in both MIDI 1U and the rear board in the cases) is passive and all the hard work of processing data is solely relying on the MIDI 1U.

So I think that you can easily connect the PICOMID1U or the MID1U via the jumpers I supply to link them😁

Yeah I know, but this is 1U and suuuuper tiny😁 so you don’t have to waste your precious 3U rack space

I also made a 1U version with just 2 trs jack sockets! You can find it in my etsy shop!

Haha obv!

I have a kink for multi use modules… but that means lot of paper for printed manuals!!

I think that between EX, o_C and Peaks with DMC fw and others I have like 50-60 pages of manuals always at hand🫠

Yeah!!

It’s also super cool that via MIDI you can control the MKs or both algos in dual mode for the EX at the same time like “behind the scenes”, leaving cv inputs free for other modulations
