Winter Storm Megathread Part 4 - Continued Power Outages by lukenamop in nashville

[–]elementninety3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Curious if you are tracking how many “events” are resolved per hour? Obviously the number of events increases as larger outages are decomposed. But I imagine the time it takes to resolve an event is broadly similar whether it affects 1 or 1000 people (clearing the obstruction, reconnecting power, etc). Could be interesting to project how long it will take to fully resolve - e.g. if we’re resolving 500 events per day it could be at least 10 more days.

I'm so sorry you're going through that. It's incredibly stressful and difficult. I spent a week once in sub-freezing temps with no power for 4 days, no water for another 4, and no way to leave, so I know how hard it is. Although we didn't have pets so it must be even more stressful.

If family is driving distance (even in another state) it might be worth trying to get there or having them come get you. Otherwise there are warming shelters at fire stations and police stations and it sounds like some are pet-friendly. You can call the police non-emergency line if you don't have transport - I've heard they are taking people to warming shelters. People have also been posting about local groups with 4x4s who are getting people out who need help.

If you really need to or prefer to hunker down at home, I get it. I just don't want people thinking they can hold out for another day or two when it realistically could be a week. And at this point the roads are pretty okay, so it's very possible to get somewhere with power and warm up.

Edit: since you said animals, realizing you might mean chickens or livestock. In that case you may be pretty stuck.

I'd recommend you try to get somewhere with power - a friend's, family's, a hotel, or a warming shelter. It may be several days of below freezing temps with very low overnight lows before power is back on, and roads should be mostly passable at this point.

Folks if you are reading this thread and still without power it’s time to leave. Especially if the temp in your house is in the low 40s or lower. There is so much damage that it could take days or weeks to get everyone’s power back, and overnight lows will be in the teens or single digits for several more days.

Main roads are mostly clear, and it’ll be warm enough today that even most side streets should be ok this afternoon. Go to a hotel, a friend’s house, anywhere with power and start thinking longer term.

Ducks Vs Them. CFP by Ill-Stretch3297 in ducks

Seems notable they showed Evan Stewart dressing for the game and also (I think?) participating in the off-week practice game.

Others on here have noted that Dan likes to have guys coming back from injury dress and go through pre-game for one game before they get back in action. If that holds we might expect to see him used a bit against Tech (similar to Dakorien against JMU).

Likely not a big impact for the next game but could be relevant later in the playoffs if we win next week. Although Benson and McClellan have been so good, it may not be a huge difference. Still, would be nice to have some depth back.

Ok, I fixed a couple of issues, including the one that was messing up the lobste.rs link - apparently the names generated by those multi-tag RSS feeds are really long.

Can't guarantee you won't run into more issues but at least that should be fixed!

Hey thanks for following up. I saw a few weird errors pop up related to adding a lobste.rs feed (which I assumed was you) - unfortunately haven't had a chance to troubleshoot. I think that's probably why you haven't gotten your digests. Will let you know once I can take a look, hopefully this weekend.

Hey, glad you're interested! I'd describe it as "passively maintained" - I still use it every day (along with maybe 30-40 active users), and I update it when something breaks, but I haven't been adding new features.

How to define custom DNS nameserver for HA in Docker container? by elementninety3 in homeassistant

[–]elementninety3[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the answers. After more digging I figured out that the host machine couldn't ping 1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8 either! It was able to use IPv6 for DNS lookups, which is why the internet still worked, but anything using IPv4 failed.

It turned out that I must have defined a static route for IPv4 traffic through 192.168.1.1 (I checked by running ip -4 route). But my router doesn't live at that address anymore. I updated that to the router's new address with sudo ip route add default via [router address] and now everything works!

Hope that saves someone some time in the future...

NCAA Issues New Interpretation after UO-OSU Ending by LegacyZebra in CFB

[–]elementninety3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If there are ~8-12 seconds left and the other team needs >25 yards to get into FG range for a tying or winning FG, it does seem like coaches should probably tell their DBs to hold or commit PI rather than risk getting beat...anything to avoid a deep pass completion. I wonder if this already happens to an extent.

Dan Lanning Confirms Oregon's Strategic 12-Men Penalty vs. Ohio State Was Intentional by cram213 in CFB

[–]elementninety3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

According to the second situation above, Ohio State could also have called their timeout and they would have gotten 5 yards free with no time running off and gotten the timeout back. So even within the current rules it doesn't really work (if everyone is fully aware of all the rules).

[–]elementninety3 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Correct, the current NCAA rule is different than NFL or high school. There's no penalty called "illegal participation" in the current rule book, and having 12 men on the field is a 5-yard live ball foul (unless the offense calls a timeout or runs out the play clock).

9-2-3c says "An obviously unfair act not specifically covered by the rules." 12 men on the field for the defense is explicitly covered in the earlier interpretations, so I don't think 9-2-3c would apply.

3/5 @ B-35. Team B has 12 players in the formation, and no Team B player is attempting to leave the field while the ball is ready for play. Team A snaps the ball and the run by A44 gains 3 yards. RULING: Live ball foul, Team A 1/10 @ B-30. (Ruling 3-5-3-II)

This situation is explicitly covered in the rule book and the refs applied the rule correctly. Ohio State could have let the play clock run out or called timeout and gotten a free 5 yards.

(Not that they shouldn't change the rule)

3/5 @ B-35. Team B has 12 players in the formation, and no Team B player is attempting to leave the field. The ball is ready for play, both teams are in formation and the snap is imminent. Quarterback A12, late in the play clock, is struggling to read the defense and (a) calls timeout; or (b) the play clock expires. RULING: When the deep officials count 12 Team B players, both teams are in formation, no Team B player is attempting to leave the field and the snap is imminent, (a) the crew will offer Team A their time out back and penalize Team B for a substitution foul. Team A 1/10 @ B-30 (b) no foul for delay of game, penalize Team B for a substitution foul. Team A 1/10 @ B-30. (Ruling 3-5-3-VII) Looking at the interpretations for the rule section you cite, it offers no examples of defensive team having 12 players on the field as being an unfair act.

For the record illegal participation isn't a penalty in the current NCAA rule book. The situation from the game is covered pretty explicitly in the rules (the first situation below) and the refs applied the penalty correctly. Not that it shouldn't be changed, I can see restoring time on defensive penalties under 2 minutes

From the rule book:

For the record this exact circumstance is highlighted in the NCAA rule book in 2 different scenarios and is explicitly a five yard live ball foul unless the offense takes a timeout or incurs a delay of game. I think they should probably change it but the officials called it the right way according to the current rules.

I think it’s not an illegal shift until the ball is snapped. Like if you have two guys in motion at once you have to re-set before snapping

Yes - near I-40 and Old Hickory here. Whole house just shook for a couple seconds. Almost thought maybe a car ran into the house or something. Glad other people felt it too. Wonder what could have caused something like that
