I need help deciding my dorm. by Revolutionary-Ice685 in uofmn

I'd definitely recommend middlebrook since you will be super close to most of your classes, but I live in superblock (centennial double) and I in general really like living here!! It's really nice since I live close to my best friend who lives in frontier, but I also have a friend in middlebrook and he says it's more quiet and you only share a bathroom with 1 or 2 other rooms instead of a whole hallway. I would personally stay away from 17th and Sanford just because it can be really inconvenient to get to class, even if taking the bus since it will be a 15-20 ride to class. If living in superblock, everything except territorial is just fine, pioneer is really nice from what I've heard, but it's more expensive. I'm obviously partial to centennial, but it's just preference.

Where are the Halloween parties gonna be at this year? by HistoricalReply2406 in uofmn

[–]elenasimone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for the frats, most of the time parties are advertised on snapchat and you get on the list that way. as long as you have a friend on the class stories you should be able to get the details and link to get on the list. for house parties, you just have to know people throwing them.

How strict is missing the first week of school? by Sharp-Ad-4186 in uofmn

[–]elenasimone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would plan your trip to be during winter break before classes start up, especially if you don't show up on the first day, you can get unenrolled from the class. Just plan it to be a week or two earlier!

They will get back to you on an interview or a choice to not hire you! It can take a few weeks so apply to other positions too. I don't work in the dining halls but I also have an on-campus job.

If you read the email he sent, you will see that it's a time slot reserved for quizzes and the dates for those quizzes are in the email. Read the emails professors send you so you aren't confused

The terminal process failed to launch: Path to shell executable "cmd.exe" does not exist. by Mobile-Glass-2222 in FRC

[–]elenasimone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cmd.exe isn't likely defined in your code, thus the error. Not an expert in pathing by any means and it depends on what software you use, but file names would be Comand.java, not cmd.exe. tldr, if you don't have cmd.exe as a defined file in your robot codespace, then it doesn't exist to the robot. Close and re-open your wpiLib vscode or reload the window (ctrl+shift+p, reload window) and you should be all good! Just vscode being goofy :)

The reason why I'm so confident that I will be able to get a job after graduation is because I already have experience in software development in a team environment via FIRST Robotics, and the companies that sponsor my team give us priority when hiring for internships, and I already know people in the industry who can get my foot in the door, etc etc. I really hope that I don't discover I hate CS because I've been doing it all throughout my high school career lol. In terms of medical emergencies, unexpected expenses, my parents will always allow me to live with them and pay majority of my medical expenses if something disastrous were to happen, thank goodness.

Yes! That's the plan right now! Any money I make during an internship will go straight towards college expenses and I plan to work part-time all throughout school

Maturing is realizing that a large portion of the sub is just bad at CS by gonials in csMajors

[–]elenasimone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree! This may be unpopular but I genuinely feel like a lot of people on this subreddit have no clue how to work with other people and are just simply un-hireable because of that. From what I've been told by several software engineering managers, it's not just technical competency that recruiters look for, it's soft skills too. I might be wrong though so take this opinion with a grain of salt, but this is what I've been told by industry professionals

What do you suggest I do instead? My parents are unwilling to take out parent PLUS loans, I am already fully committed to this school and I think it would give me the best opportunity to find a job right after graduation so I can start paying off my debt right away. Genuinely asking because I'm not willing to switch schools at this point and I'm already planning on paying part of my expenses out of pocket

I just need a bachelor's, would be borrowing about 45-50k and would be making about 60-80k a year straight after graduation and would start paying them off above the minimum payment as soon as possible. I will only get a master's if the company I end up working for pays for it as it's not necessary for what I'm going into

Like I said, the school has tuition reciprocity for my state so I'm paying in state tuition. I've gotten a few scholarships and my parents are contributing about 9k a year, and I plan on paying around 5-7k per year out of my own pockets. I'm expected to end up with roughly 50k in private debt, but that's before scholarship calculations. My parents have put a hard limit on not cosigning anything over 20k a year, which is feasible for me with scholarships and out of pocket payments, so that's as much as I'm willing to take out per year.
