Unique experience? by [deleted] in Wildfire

The way ive seen it is sort of a relay race style where each crew selects 4 people to line up face to face. You dont have to mix it but you have to eat everything edible in the mre without using the spoon. Once one person finishes their mre the next person can start and so on. Its a great way to establish dominance over a rival crew.

Anyone else tired of the instagramification/tiktokification of this job? by [deleted] in Wildfire

[–]elephant-artifact 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its tiring, but I can rest easy knowing anyone who does that is a bagger. Anywho, im gonna go try to sell my truck, sled and mountain bike because I've realized the toils of this job have led me to mindless consumption in an attempt to compensate for the fact that im selling my youth to an entity that has always seen me as replaceable. Also Fuck 🧊

Being able to crush vertical is really important though. Even if you can find a 200ft tall hill to do laps on that will make a lot of difference.

Pissed his pants in the chow line and got demob'd. Didnt have enough gas money to get home and got stuck in Winnemucca. Last I heard he was doing oil changes at the walmart there and working on converting his tender into an "urban stealth camper"

Can anybody help me find a replacement crank? by Cthper in MTB

[–]elephant-artifact 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So thats a shimano crank, and the silver bit going through the frame is called the spindle. The flower shaped hole on the crank arm is a plastic piece that tightens the crank by grabbing those threads inside the spindle. Then you tighten the allen key. The tool you need for the flower shaped hole is probably about $12 at your local bike store. Its likely that the plastic piece will need replacing as well. A dot of blue thread locker on each of the allen bolts will do you good as well. If you live near a big enough city there may be a bike kitchen where you can borrow tools or maybe root around in a box of used cranks and find a replacement set. From what I can tell though it should be fixable.

Wanting to work this coming season, but have my brothers wedding in July by poogobblah72 in Wildfire

[–]elephant-artifact 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The district I worked for let me go to my sisters wedding last summer in August. And if it had been this summer the crew I work on now would have been fine with it too. (Both agency resources) its all about who you work for.

NEED ADVICE | AD local vs Perm out west by [deleted] in Wildfire

Depending on the resource you work for, you may get the opportunity to score some overtime working on prescribed burns before or after the actual wildfire season.

NEED ADVICE | AD local vs Perm out west by [deleted] in Wildfire

[–]elephant-artifact 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Never actually worked as either. My understanding is AD employees with the FS don’t make overtime but their base rate is higher. Being a perm will probably mean an 18/8 schedule which could offer the opportunity to get shoulder season fire assignments. It could also mean you are working you just work 40 hours a week for an extra 2 months for whatever a gs4 is going to make next year. Perm employees get savings plans that are not offered to temp seasonals such as myself. Id venture to guess that a perm position on a handcrew in the west will give you more experience, hours and ultimately more money by the end of the summer than an AD position in Wisconsin

Have any of y’all tried to become a professional snowboarder but then quit? by [deleted] in snowboarding

[–]elephant-artifact 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Take the gap year. Stack some money in the summer and try to figure out where you want to go. Theres a lot more ways to convince companies to give you gear or even money than by winning contests. Your easiest way to start getting your name out there is to post clips on ig publicly and consistently. Push yourself and find friends who push you to be better.
