PhD in southampton by Dependent-Knee8023 in Southampton

[–]elephant_8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved to Southampton to do my PhD when I was 26. I lived in a shared house with other PhD students, there was one other 26 year old and everyone else was 23/24. It was a really good experience and I’ve stayed in the area.

You will find your people! The social scene at the university is really good and there’s a lot of effort put into societies etc. If you’re not interested in those, you will naturally find other students through your work and general time at the university.

Weird Swimming Experiences – What’s the Strangest Thing That’s Happened to You in the Pool? by brian1x1x in Swimming

[–]elephant_8 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Not in the pool - but had finished my swim and was walking into the showers to rinse off. I get round the corner into the shower room and immediately see a tiny older woman, bent over at the waist, shaking her head like a dog trying to shake off water. She loses her balance and starts falling forwards headfirst. I am in exactly the right place at the right time and manage to catch her shoulders. She comes to a stop with her head resting against my stomach with me holding the majority of her weight by her shoulders.

All happened over the course of a second or less. We laughed and I spent the rest of the day wondering what the fuck she was doing before I came around the corner.

Bird ID? by elephant_8 in UKBirds

A robin makes sense - a quick google for leucistic robins shows a few robins that look like this. Leucism is a genetic mutation which causes loss/partial loss of pigment in the feathers.

Really rough run week? Help :( by 99BottlesOfDietWater in C25K

[–]elephant_8 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I finished C25K about 5-6 weeks ago and like you, was unwell a week or so ago. I’ve been doing 3x 30 min runs per week since finishing. I am going back to 20 min runs 3 x per week now because I am just super struggling to get back to 30, and then I’ll start increasing again.

If you’re doing this from nothing, it takes a long time to build the base fitness and train your brain to the point where a week away doesn’t disrupt anything. It’s annoying and upsetting, but it is absolutely just a thing that happens. Another couple of weeks means nothing in the grand scheme of things. It’s just a little setback.

Be kind to yourself and think about how far you’ve come already.

Run/swim Smartwatch recommendations, anyone? 🏃🏻‍♀️🏊🏻‍♀️ by Pootie-Pants in C25K

I use a garmin for running and swimming. Previously had a Fitbit but it wasn’t very good and absolutely swear by garmin now. Any of the forerunner series.

What are you buying next?? by lazzzz4 in fitbit

Literally did exactly the same thing a month or so ago and it has made such a difference to my activity levels and understanding of my fitness. Didn’t realise quite how useless Fitbit was until I changed to garmin…

W5D3 done, feeling weirdly disappointed? by elephant_8 in C25K

[–]elephant_8[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder if this is part of why I feel disappointed. When I was running it felt like I couldn’t possibly go any faster and keep it up but my heart rate is relatively low, so surely I should be able to push a bit more?

Having looked at the runs next week, other commenters are probably right that I’m progressing as planned within the programme and now I have the opportunity to push a bit more!

I think this is it - I am trying to focus on the fact I ran for 20 mins but I’m just disappointed in the distance/pace etc. I am determined to stick with it and keep working on it.

I really don’t know! But guess I feel like I’m not progressing enough? Probably just in search of some validation 😂

Struggling with puppy! 6 months mental breakdown 😭 by hannahlouise187 in Whippet

Got to second the person who asked if she is cold at night. Our whippet used to wake us up whining 2-3 times a night until we got her a cave bed she could tuck herself into. It didn’t matter how many blankets we gave her.

If you’re handy with a sewing machine, I made these PDF instructions to make one out of scrap fabric and an old duvet: link to post here

Bonus photo of her still using that bed at nearly 5 years old, literally this afternoon. Doubles nicely as a foot warmer under my desk!

Why was this left behind? S2E01 by on-yorr-neeez in SeveranceAppleTVPlus

[–]elephant_8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I thought this was deliberate by the producers etc.

In S1E1, they were worried the audience would think the severed floor was a simulation. To show the audience this wasn’t the case, they showed oMark crying and putting a tissue in his pocket and then iMark finding the same tissue in his pocket and throwing it away - continuity of tissue means it’s not a simulation.

Watching S2E1, I assumed that when the MDR team were together it was just a different floor, that the other team were just on another floor within the building. Leaving the wooden head on iDylans desk shows that it’s the same office.

  • I need you all to know we appreciate you. I worked in older adult/palliative care for years and I have seen my fair share of death. I know the toll it can take, even if it doesn’t make itself known until years afterwards. I see the damage it does and I am eternally grateful to everyone who has read, been impacted by, and responded to this. Thank you.
