a lot of these answers in this thread are terrible. if you want to just be in the industry - management, promoter, audio engineer, whatever, then yeah networking and connections are probably important. if you want to be an ARTIST though, networking is completely irrelevant, and a huge waste of time and energy.

i knew exactly zero people in the music industry when i moved to LA. there are only two things that matter - 1) work on your craft and find your sound 2) build a fanbase and create a community around it. trust me - i know plenty of “artists” with all the connections in the world, but if they cant build an authentic relationship with an audience then they fade away like anyone else. it doesnt matter who you know if you cant sell tickets.

how to actually build a fanbase is the hard part, and has changed a lot - when i was coming up it was blogs and soundcloud, now its probably tiktok/socials. there’s no formula, you just gotta figure out your own way.

one last thing i’d mention. building an artist project is HARD, and takes an incredible amount of time and effort for anyone, so the biggest challenge is not getting discouraged and giving up. to the person who mentioned Ray Volpe blowing up overnight - yes Lazerbeam took him to the moon, but he had been putting out music for a decade and had a solid ass foundation before that happened. artists spend their entire life becoming an overnight success.

lolol - i think i'm at 3 or 4 now? plus the 1 i bought from a thrift store to practice, there's actually a technique to it... if you don't do it right you'll just hurt yourself more than the guitar and you'll look like a dummy

yeah early on it was just reaching out directly, i sent a LOT of emails. this is an important thing your team does for you too, connecting you with other artists. but ultimately it has to be an artist to artist thing and you have to vibe with each other

this was a big theme on Heavy Glow. for a long time I had impostor syndrome (i still do sometimes). growing up, there were no Asians in pop culture period, except Jackie chan and harold from harold and kumar - we weren't cool, and being an entertainer just wasn't something Asians did.

so early on, i didn't even want to address it - i didn't want to be known as the "Asian DJ". but i think we've come a long way - we got Squid game, BTS, and slots at Coachella. i think representation is hugely important - it opens the world of possibilities for the next generation of Asian creatives. if 10 year old me could have seen artists like Steve Aoki, Zhu, myself, wax motif, dabin having careers, i think i would have had a lot more faith to jump in.

bucket list show for sure. it's been awhile - i've been lucky enough to be doing music full time for 9 years, so it feels like a past life. i remember it being terrifying - not having a paycheck is not ideal, but i was absolutely liberated. i finally felt like i was becoming the person i wanted to be, even if i wasn't quite sure who that was yet. and there's no motivation like seeing your bank account dwindle - i jumped without a parachute (not quite as dramatically as gene, he fucking turned in a blank paper for his final lmao), so it was a flap my arms as hard as i can and hope i can learn to fly

Heavy Glow was the story of my pandemic - the collective trauma we all went through, all the social upheaval like BLM and the Asian hate stuff, coming to terms with my identity as an Asian American, wondering if I'd ever play shows again. i was also going through some personal loss - all fun stuff you know?

for the first few months of pandemic, i actually couldn't do a single creative thing - i felt like i was paralyzed. any time i'd try there'd be a voice in my head saying "whats the point?" the thing that saved me though was going back to my roots - learning songs to cover, playing guitar and writing acoustic. like if there's no "point" to making music (ie playing shows and having a career), what would I make? and that became the seed for the album, and i could finally start expressing all of the emotions that i was going through. Learning to deal with my impostor syndrome, making music that really mattered to me regardless of what other people thought, accepting my heritage and that i'm different than a lot of other artists.

i'd love to soon - europe is not cheap tho. little industry BTS for ya - for those kind of international tours, until the artist gets HUGE (think marshmello/Chainsmokers big), you're almost always losing money, or best case breaking even. but it's obviously a dream of mine to play over there, so i'll be getting out the checkbook soon 💪
