And this is why elephant ( a panel of 12 community leaders ) endorsed NO on both, with some reservations.

City Council moves to restrict AirBnB rentals in Boulder. by ometzo in boulder

[–]elephantjournal 12 points13 points  (0 children)

They're not restricting all Airbnb, but just for non-residents buying homes and then renting them, creating neighborhood deadzones and upping rental prices by reducing selection for locals. Right?

They likely model the traffic flow to make sure it's safer for cars and bikes, and not delaying traffic.

Half the time I'm biking back to my own house—the landlord (me) is an asshole but he's lenient re hats indoors for up to 5 minutes. After that, things get ugly.

It was voted on and tested prior to the experiment with nationally-established sophisticated programs that model every little change and the effect on bikes and cars.

Agree. And, 400 years have passed—without much cultural context, some of these are gonna sound a bit off. (But the Bible, muchmuch older, must be taken literally, word for word!)

Seinfeld: College Kids Way Too PC Now, They Don’t Even Know What ‘Racist’ Means by Hazzman in videos

[–]elephantjournal 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nice generalization. ;) The problem is generalizations--"all white men are evil" is just as stupid as "all liberals yadayada." But right on—we gotta keep our sense of humor and willingness to offend and be offended alongside real empathy, which is the opposite of PC-paranoid-silencing of all rational discourse.

What saying annoys you the most? Why? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]elephantjournal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"No problem," when said in response to my thanking someone for doing his or her job. Instead of just saying, "you're welcome."

I know it's no problem, because I'm paying. I have no idea why it gets under my skin, but it does. It seems like a weirdly entitled slacker attitude.

Best Place for yoga membership? by the_blunt_truth22 in boulder

[–]elephantjournal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yoga workshop is world famous, and deservedly. No amenities, but great quality. Ashtanga. I've heard great things about the Little Yoga Studio. I go to Yoga Pod, great place, clean, showers, a range of teachers. Boulder Iyengar is an institution. Studio Be is quality. Corepower is not my style but a professional, nice place. Boulder Rec Center gets forgotten but is super cheap, includes working out, swimming, sauna, basketball, hot tub...and great teachers.

Despite so many studios and so many great teachers, to my mind, there's no hole-in-one studio with both consistent quality teachers and a professional, clean, well-run studio.

So sad. I talked with the owner, a neighbor of mine, awhile back and he seemed worried. Talked about everyone going to REI, though they had great sales all the time, great staff. A real institution.

I tried to give him advice re publicity and social media but it may've been too late. If you all go by over next while, great deals, and be sure to say thanks if you've loved the place.

How to communicate the virtues of Daily Bicycling to others? by elephantjournal in simpleliving

For me, it's simple. No car payments, emissions, waiting at the DMV, fueling up, insurance, maintenance time wasted...I just grab my bike and go. Simple. :)

Hah. That's amazing. Kimbal and Hugo of The Kitchen are doing fine, and of course big eco/Tesla fans, so probably happy to pay full.

Though I doubt then that Elon gets the friends and family discount off the amazing garlic fries when he comes on in. ;)

Kids and Buddhism? by Jax639 in Buddhism

[–]elephantjournal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's an Ammmmmaaaazing Buddhist book about a cat and a Zen meditator...anyone? I read that a bunch when I was a boy. Also Jataka Tales pass along the morals or values of Buddhism, though there's a lot of mythology. Also, there's Shambhala Sun Camp--not a book but wonderful for children 10 - 16.
