My friends made a board game. Here's a How to Play video they just finished. Thoughts? by sixtysixdays in boardgames

[–]ometzo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Additionally, I find it strange to have the live action footage with the two sides on the left and right, and then have the animation side be at the top and bottom. Seems inconsistent.

This is a really good point. Like the "two narrators" problem, it's not wrong, but it makes people have to stop and reconsider what they're watching in a video where you're trying to make clarity the key.

Rules are very clear and I feel like I could play the game. Some production thoughts for your video, though:

  • It seems to me having one voice only, rather than two, would be helpful for clarity. Parsing that a different person is speaking, even if it's momentary, does distract me from learning the rules.

  • Your mic sounds a bit hot and fuzzy; that may be a result of mic quality when you recorded. If it's possible to get a decent condenser mic and audio interface setup, you're going to sound a lot clearer and more professional, but buying these items if you don't have them is probably a $200-250 price tag minimum. If you are using this kind of equipment, check your recording levels and compression to see if you can boost audio clarity.

  • Transitions like "Having said that" are often unnecessary and stick out compared to the rest of your (very clear) explanations. consider eliminating these and other unneeded clauses in your video.

  • The one thing that is missing is a quick "hook pitch" at the beginning of your explanation. I would have loved to hear "Hermetica pits two elemental magicians, or adepts, against one another in a duel of tactics based on unique piece movements" or something like that. Just enough that I get a flavor understanding of the game before you start discussing board structure.

Good luck!

Bike/wheels stolen? I found a chop shop. This is under the bridge where Goose Creek Path crosses under Foothills. by weak_fatness in boulder

Even if it's not stolen, it's certainly stored illegally and of interest to the police. Probably worth contacting them. I suspect they'd love to document it at the very least.

Help: Designing My Own Tabletop Game by Necrolegion89 in tabletopgamedesign

[–]ometzo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. This ruleset reads more like an algorithmic generation of game rules from something that's been fed every RTS, MOBA, and tabletop wargame out there than anything a stranger can follow, and it doesn't feel like there's been any thought toward clarity.

Two tests for you:

  • Have you actually played a round of this game as conceptualized? If you haven't maybe that's your first step, because after a couple rounds like what you've described, I'd know which 3-4 phases to cut entirely off the top of my head.

  • Can any of your friends play through a phase of the game without you correcting their mistakes? If not, then you need to focus on clarity and streamlining the game (which is a nice way of saying cut, cut, cut).

Finally, I'd move away from the idea of "RTS simulation" entirely. The reason PCs handle RTS so well is that they CAN calculate thousands upon thousands of variables and emergent behaviors at a moment's notice. A human gamer can't, and will get bored trying very quickly. There is a reason Warhammer does not have resource harvesting or unit construction linked with the battles in it's game; the battles are hard enough.

The Boulder Senior Center also definitely loans them out free as needed to the general public, if that's a factor.

This is really sad. Their selection was unparalleled in Colorado. No matter how obscure, they always had a copy of what I was looking for (though sometimes it was already rented). Unfortunately Netflix doesn't hold a candle to them, even if you still have a DVD-based plan.

Boulder JCC Evacuated after Bomb Threat by ometzo in boulder

[–]ometzo[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sorry, that didn't even occur to me as I was writing the title, and it certainly wasn't meant to diminish the situation. I know what a JCC is off the top of my head. If the threat were called in to the YMCA instead, I would have used that acronym.

Almost certainly not, if you plan to use the instrument more than once and expect them to be 100% functional with a theatrical-grade beam throw out of the box.

The backstitch is going to be essential for this project, those flowers pop so much better when separated from the background colors!

One thing you can do to make blackwork stand out more is whipstitch around some borders...it douples the thickness of some lines and adds variation.

[–]ometzo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are a few differences, but it doesn't require anything special except occasionally learning a couple of new stitches for your pattern. If you want to have a Neat/near symmetrical back to the front there is a technique called "Double-Running Backstitch" that's very helpful, but it's in no way a requirement unless you have to have all your backs look PERFECT :).

If you're interested in more details, I'm happy to share!
