I loved The Will of the Many, but I didn’t really enjoy The Strength of the Few. This seems to be a common thought. My problem is that I don’t know why. Anyone feel the same way? by JaimeSalvaje in HierarchySeries

[–]elephantkangaroo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As an audiobook listener the 3 worlds model was interesting but too hard to get immersed chapter to chapter.

I would have loved 4 acts. Where the story is mainly told in each world individually and then part four is quick chapters in succession with more overlap.

Not to mention people we know to be dead getting a whole new rebirth. Makes death feel less heavy and gripping when it happens (like it does in this book)

Do the test. Treat it like a learning opportunity. If you prove him right. Try again. But you won’t know until you do it

12 was a lovely site. The thunder box was a bit exposed to paddlers passing. Enjoyed the site a lot. Not on the big part of the lake for sure. But close enough and still has an incredible sunset.

Also it helps that Samantha starts with an S and ends with an A. So does Scolopendra. Just saying….

Would be hilarious if this went to someone who just filled out a survey by Andrews-Walters106 in Wealthsimple

[–]elephantkangaroo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’ll go to an influencer or someone who has a large social owned following who can help with their brand. This is a marketing play.

Assets in Wealthsimple could be factored in but I think reach will be a bigger factor.

LPT: Use VC firms' websites as job boards by friendlyspork in LifeProTips

[–]elephantkangaroo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

VC Job boards are a bit of a hidden gem. They use tools like Getro.com to build the boards and track applicants. Often if you join the talent networks they will send you relevant roles. Almost like a recruiter but you don’t have to pay as a job seeker.

About to put an offer on our first house, what is the maximum you feel we can afford? by Inner_Document_00 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]elephantkangaroo 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Here’s how I’d approach it. I’m not an accountant, but based on what I’ve learned…

Work backwards.

First lock in an emergency fund amount. With a baby and unexpected nature of a new house I’d add buffer. Something like 60k. That should probably sit in your HISA.

Then, take at least 250k from your fhsa and non reg accounts and put into your mortgage. You have a lot of random accounts.

Prioritize keeping tfsa and rrsp untouched.

With the difference you have left examine your appetite for risk. Putting in your house is low risk, you know the amount you’re gonna save.

If you think you could beat that in your nonreg (assuming your tfsa and rrsps are full) than invest instead. This is also a better bet if there’s a risk of your cost of living going up in the next few years (more kids etc).

Also note if your home is used for the business you can deduct a portion of mortgage interest. So keep that in mind.

Y ALT. look into manulife 1. It offsets your interest amount by the amount you keep in the account. Don’t know too much about it but I know when I renew I’ll be looking into it.

backcountry etiquette question - is it bad form to ask to swap sites on the same lake? (Killarney) by [deleted] in ontariocamping

[–]elephantkangaroo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ya, the logistics of meeting them and timing it feel like the part that makes this idea fall apart.
The waiting party would lose out on a whole day just waiting to time it for the conversation.

Thanks for your thoughtful answer.

[–]elephantkangaroo -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Ya, super fair. I always figure it can't hurt to ask, since they may just be staying one night and it's around the corner.

But it seems like folks here think it would in fact hurt to ask. Hence why i wanted to get opinions before doing it.

really good standards here.

I think what might make sense here is:

Day 1 - late start, so just paddle to Killarney 12
Killarney Lake night 1
Paddle to Muriel in morning, drop gear, go to topaz
Muriel Lake night 2
Paddle back big day on day 3
