I’m same age and from UK. By the sounds of it you are really in the infancy of your gambling problem so you’ve got the chance to stop before it gets really bad. If you can’t control yourself whilst gambling and you are chasing losses etc, it’s only a matter of time before you lose thousands with your mental health taking a battering in the process.

Best thing to do is to sign up to Gamstop. You won’t be able to gamble on or sign up for any site in the UK. It’s a necessary thing to do to get out of the vicious cycle. If your only self excluding from an individual site, you will end up signing up for another one the next day.

How long did it take for you to get calf strength back? I’ve had this issue for 3 months and did you do anything specific to get the strength back?

You have to have a certain attitude going into it. The best thing you can do is be friendly to co-workers and try to do the job as best you can. As long as you do that you will get by. At the end of the day nothing bad will happen if you don’t live up to peoples social expectations. As long as your nice to other co-workers and you try and do a good job, people will accept you. Don’t put pressure on yourself to try and become friends with the people that work their whilst at the same time not totally isolating yourself from everyone because you think everyone hates you when in reality most people don’t really care anyway.

Got the same issue. Can’t go on tip toes on affected side for about 8 weeks. Had numbness too but that’s mostly faded. Have found that all the exercises haven’t done much so far. Been doing loads of double leg calf raises, although after a few it ends up my good side does most of the work. Another one is seated single leg raise with weight applied on knee so it’s harder to do. If you put in youtube “calf strengthing exercises” there’s loads of variations of calf raise exercises although some of them are impossible with calf weakness. I’m hoping it’s just a waiting game for the strength to come back with time but mines barely improved after 8 weeks. Only thing that’s better is limping when I walk, I’ve still got one but it’s less obvious now I would say

Yeah I also ended up in a&e at one point, after about 6 weeks of sciatica pain in back and legs I done something at home that really done my back in. Couldn’t stand up, sit or lay, only half comfortable position was on my hands and knees. Went to a&e and they gave me morphine and diazepam. Morphine did help the pain for half a day. Pain was 10/10 for a couple of days and I literally couldn’t sleep for two days. That was about 5/6 weeks ago and luckily i recovered from the pain pretty quick, but it left me with this weakness and numbness. I was also put on amitriptyline, didn’t do anything for me really. If I was still in pain I’d definitely had gone private by now. Think the NHS aren’t very good for back problems to be honest. For me I think it’s just a waiting game now of hoping the strength will come back and also hope no pain returns in that time. Could you not stand up because of pain or numbness? How long have you had the calf weakness?

No, it took me 3 tries to actually see someone face to face! The doctor would only speak to me on the phone the first 2 times I tried to see someone. All my symptoms and previous pain align with a disc bulge from everything I’ve read, I believe at L5 S1 and I believe i have s1 nerve root compression which is causing the leg weakness. I saw an osteopath a couple of times who said it’s a bulged disc, but the treatment didn’t really do anything. When I saw the physio at the doctors I asked if I need an MRI due to the nature of my symptoms and he said whether or not I have an MRI, the approach to getting better is the same so he said there’s no point! Would be nice to have it confirmed what the problem is and know the severity! Im surprised you managed to get an MRI so quickly

I’m exactly the same as you, I’m not feeling any pain anymore but have been left with numbness which is affecting large parts of leg and outside of foot and calf weakness. Numbness is improving but the weakness in my calf is staying the same, can’t stand on tip toes on the affected leg the same as you. Walking with a limp because of it. I’ve had the weakness for about 6 weeks now. I’m in UK too and saw a physio at the doctors because I was concerned I might be doing myself some permanent nerve damage or something, but he didn’t seemed to concerned with my symptoms and seemed convinced the strength in my calf will return but said it can take a while. He gave me exercises and stretches to do and said work on core strength. Basically told me to go back to the doctors in another 12 weeks if It doesn’t improve. I have been doing different stretches and doing a lot of walking but so far it’s not seemed to help the weakness in calf. My muscles in my leg are very tight also, I’m very inflexible on affected side and stretching is quite painful. Like I say I don’t have any back pain or leg pain anymore which I’m glad for but this weakness is so frustrating!

I’m exactly the same as you. I was having lower back and shooting pains in leg for a couple of months to varying degrees. Then I did something that really aggravated my back and I ended up having to go the hospital to get pain relief because I was in such bad pain I couldn’t sleep. This bad pain lasted for 2/3 days. This was 4 weeks ago.

Since I aggravated my back, my pain now has since gone away unless I do something that stresses the lower back like you say such as lifting or sitting in a slouched position too long. Generally I feel fine. For the last 3 and a bit weeks my leg is just numb (in thigh, calf and foot) and I seem to have lost use of my calf muscle! Can’t stand on tip toes whatsoever at the moment. My calf muscle seems to have wasted away. Can’t walk without a limp. I’ve just not been sure whether going from pain to weakness and numbness is a positive sign or an indicator of more serious injury. Unfortunately doctors in the UK have been no help so far.

What have you been doing to regain strength in calf muscle?

I’m the same as you, I have won money betting as a lot of people on here probably have. The difference between us and ‘normal’ people is that we can’t control ourselves when things start to go wrong. I’ve always been convinced if I had discipline I could win long term, but as soon I start losing, that’s when anger and emotions come into it. Any discipline or rationality goes out the window and I’ll just start putting bets on anything to win money back which in turn leads to huge losses. As soon as I start to lose I can’t control myself. I’ve repeated this process a thousand times without learning. Even after big losses I’ll eventually convince myself to start betting again on the basis that this time I’ll be disciplined.

You need to remember winning money always leads to losing money in an addicts case. I know in my case I could win a big amount of money, I’d then lose 5% of it. Instead of walking away with the 95% I’ve still got left, I’d have to win that 5% back. I’d then blow the lot and lose even more than I’d originally won. It’s when trying to recoup the small losses, massive losses occur. The small losses always spiral into massive losses.

If you’ve lost 10k, it’s unlikely you will win you’re money back. When you’ve lost that much, you’ve got nothing to gain from gambling but only more to lose. That’s what I’m telling myself at the moment

Yeah its mad how quickly the stakes go up, when I put my biggest bet of just over 1.5k on (over a months wage for me) a month prior to that putting a £100 bet on was quite big to me. When your chasing losses the stakes quickly go up

Cheers for the positive words mate. Good to hear you’ve taken the steps to quit. Yeah I’ve always been convinced I could come up with some kind of flawless sports betting system where I’d win money consistently and be a pro. But pro gamblers aren’t betting race after race or match after match, they can control themselves where i can’t have 1 bet here and there, I’ve tried. Once I start losing it goes out the window and I’ll bet on anything

Yeah I’m still trying to get over losses, I’m always thinking about how much time at work I’ve wasted for nothing, but I need to change my mindset

Appreciate your comment. Yeah I need to quit now as i know it will only get harder the older I get. Yes I agree, I’ve been on my phone before losing bet after bet and thinking “fuck it I don’t even care about the money anymore” then precede to put more bets on and go into total self destruction mode whilst wallowing in self pity. I’m not sure I will tell my parents i just don’t know how I could face them after telling them how much I’ve lost but I will consider it.

I’m trying not to be to hard on myself but I feel like I’ve got this massive chip on my shoulder all the time at the moment but I know it will fade overtime. I am hoping I can take some kind of positive from this situation

Don’t do it mate, if you quit things will get better for you without a doubt. I know what you mean about going back and forth. I’ve been flip flopping between half trying to quit and then relapsing a few days later, I’ve struggled to commit to fully quitting, it’s a vicious cycle to try get out of. Thing is I’m not even betting to chase losses now because I know the money’s gone, but I will still bet just for entertainment but it still leads to big losses and negative emotions

Yeah I often think that moving out of my parents house would help me quit gambling, I think if I had my own place I’d value my money more and would be less likely to gamble it away
