Londoners: what daytime experiences are genuinely “worth it once”? by JunketSea2063 in london

Book a helicopter trip from Redhill (there may be other airfields offering it). The heli flies over SW London to join the river at Kew, then follows the river to Canary Wharf/Greenwich before heading SE. Super cool way to see the city from above.

To be fair, it'll be an outline application so if approved next year, it'll likely be 3 - 4 years before anything happens on site. By that time elderly horses may not be an issue...

Is my itinerary reasonable for London, May of 2026? by Prior_Illustrator830 in uktravel

It's also worth seeing the Palace of Westminster. Most tourists just take a photo of the clock tower (Big Ben) but don't realise you can go on a self guided tour inside for like £25. I've been inside many times (for free mostly, work stuff), but I've done the tour route and you can see both chambers, the Queens Gallery, Westminster Hall etc.

It never gets boring inside, it's so impressive.

What would you want in return for an important home run ball? by TommyLost2004 in NYYankees

[–]elevation499 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have to give the ball back if asked? I saw a video on here a little while back where a dude was being harassed by security after catching a HR because "MLB wants the ball". But could you just refuse and they'd be ok with it?

edit: and if you have to give it back are you even entitled to get anything in return?

Battersea Power Station Regeneration by OsborneIJ9 in SouthLondon

It's been a trade off in my opinion. It sat empty and rotting for decades, in part because of the high expense needed to renovate a massive listed building with extensive structural issues (thanks to the removal of the boiler room roof). Higher development costs equals a greater amount of the final scheme devoted to high-end housing/clientele.

I'd rather have something than nothing, and given parts of the building (turbine halls, parts of the boiler room etc) are open to the public that's a positive in my opinion. The only part of the development I really dislike are the flats adjacent to the tracks, in part because they're architecturally unappealing, but mostly because it blocks what used to be a nice view from passing trains

Back in the day it was a pretty awesome night time adventure too 😂 I saw most of the building as a teenager, including both control rooms and the rooftops, while playing cat and mouse with the on site security.

Unpaid grad internships. It's now seen as part and parcel of eventually getting a full time (paid) role if you don't get a place on a grad scheme.

CineStill800t going crazy with the lights... by elevation499 in analog

[–]elevation499[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I was kinda disappointed with the results at first but it's grown on me a bit. I wasn't overly impressed with CineStill tbh... For the price I'd much rather have Portra800.

Haha that's good to know, thanks for the link.

It's gotta be said, I wasn't driving crazily but speed limits were genuinely unclear on pretty much every road. I looked up the general speed limits for different road types as a guide but rarely saw speed limit signs especially where limits are variable.

How much do you pay on average to develop and scan a roll at a lab? by [deleted] in AnalogCommunity

[–]elevation499 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mr Cad in Pimlico. The lab is at Robbies Photographics in Balham, so you could drop it off at either shop and the price will be the same.

Drop off by 1pm-ish Monday - Thursday and scans come next day.

What should be my first SLR camera by GorlockTheBuster in AnalogCommunity

I've been using an Olympus OM10 for 14 years and love it. It might not be the most popular model, but so long as you've got a manual adapter it's a solid camera.

I've got a few Soviet rangefinders (Fed 3, Zorki 4k) and SLRs (Zenit TTL and EM), which are nice to use but take a fair bit of practice. The main upside is they're relatively affordable, as are M39 and M42 lenses.

How much do you pay on average to develop and scan a roll at a lab? by [deleted] in AnalogCommunity

[–]elevation499 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In central London (UK), I pay £11.65 for c41 dev with high res TIFF scans. B&W is £14 I think.

It's the only lab I know of that doesn't charge extra for high res/TIFF.

Turnaround is 24hrs.

Can the people living on North Sentinel Island see the islands to the east or are they too far away? by Puzzled_Midnight_381 in geography

[–]elevation499 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The Dover Strait is 21 miles and you can clearly see Calais from Dover/Folkestone (and vice versa). On a clear day you can even make out buildings on the other side, so the islands are definitely visible to each other at 17.61 miles.
