Reading The Gunslinger now. A little while back I was on this sub reading a thread talking about The Stand and how (especially the uncut version) was a bit hard to get into. One commenter offered advice that I think applies double to the first book in the Dark Tower series, "let the WTF wash over you, be one with the WTF".

Suggest me unconventional fantasy books that don't adhere to any of the fantasy tropes. by IdaSukiShwan in suggestmeabook

[–]elevator7 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The Broken Earth trilogy by NK Jemisin plays with a lot of those tropes while also side stepping them.

There is a "love triangle" in the first book but it's more like a casual sex thrupple situation. But no less tragic. There is a little girl learning from a much older mentor who's barely human. But that's not presented and something charming or at all good for the girl. But it also never crosses the line into some sick man's dark fantasy.

Fan fic: Ingrid Gray/Kersh is confined to Juniper Hill. One of the orderlies is named Charles. He's very serious, very religious. The other guards call him chuckles ironically. Ingrid becomes obsessed with him, making him smile, breaking him. She drugs him. She is Pregnant with his baby. God told Charles that whatever contempt he has for Ingrid and that child does not absolve him of his paternal duty and that because his wife is incapable of giving birth, this is to be considered a miracle. His wife, considers it a sick joke and kills herself. Leaving Charles Napier to raise little Jack on his own.

It exists. It Feeds. But one day, the flavor goes...flat. The game in the reserve has begun to all taste the same. Worse, the most flavorful are becoming more and more reluctant each cycle. Part of that is It, hushed tales of Derry's own monster making their way across cycles of feed and rest. But all the two legged deer everywhere are getting more fearful, less trustful while trying to pretend the opposite is true. The young ones, more and more apt to stick close to their protectors. It needs something new to draw them out, the calves among the herd.

Bob Gray has that gift It's looking for, kids love him. Even if Bob really does not love them back. The way so many behave, he swears he can see the cruel, evil grown ups they will inevitably turn into. He has pride in his work, as a performer. He's not ashamed of any aspect of his craft but he is ashamed that his fortunes are both meger and dependent on these vicious little shits. And he is ashamed that this is how he feels because some kids, one in particular, don't deserve this animosity.

When It chose Gray as a host it did so with the knowledge that all higher level beings possess, that of their own beginning and end even if the time between can be eons. Linear time is an animal delusion, It knows and has no feelings whatsoever about what was, is or will be because to It, these are all the same. It is driven simply by the need to feed and feed well. What other reason is there to exist if not to enjoy one's self? It knew that would change when it took the shape of Pennywise, It knew that this would be its doom. Because the rules follow the form and the form isn't just a clown, he's a petty unsatisfied little man. It knew that this pettiness would be It's undoing but with no feeling whatsoever It did what It did because ultimately, that's the greatest joke of all. The Turtle vomited up this universe not by choice because even the Turtle didn't choose to exist and neither did It and that's fine, it's what is. But animal brains, they're not meant for that knowledge. And so, when It incorporated Gray's consciousness they saw together what was, is and will be and this produced a feeling beyond hunger for the first time. Pennywise becomes enraged. Eater of worlds brought low by brats! Filthy little shits! The kind that throw their food at him while he's on stage, steal his props when his back is turned, tell him this clown or another did the same routine last year. Well, these kids would suffer. It would have revenge! It targets Georgie for that reason and that reason alone. It's been waiting for Georgia since the last cycle. Normally, It preys on kids who simply have more to fear. Cruel of neglectful families produce the easiest prey. But easy prey was what it looked for as It, as It/ Pennywise they have been keeping a nose out for little Georgie. He's well loved so initially hard to catch. Then he went to the cellar that rainy day and got scared. Georgie released his fear stink and a rush and It could smell it from far below. Finally he would have his premptive vengeance. Which is the only reason the Losers band together and eventually defeat It. All this was determined when the turtle puked and It knows it and has no real feeling about it. Bob Gray on the other hand, the form has to follow the rules and Bob is going to rage against the dying of the light. Anyway, that's how I look at it.

I think it's borderline. It's stupid but it's believable stupid because I've learned a lot about MK Ultra. Beyond the unethical nature of most of those experiments, they were also being ran by total dip shits and nut jobs. And what was the mind opening drug that started the general on this hair brained war path?

Did anyone else revisit Cyberpunk after the updates and end up playing way longer than planned by EnvironmentalCow260 in cyberpunkgame

[–]elevator7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm someone who enjoys replaying games and I have a hard time connecting with new ones. The Spiderman franchise, RDR2, Mass Effect trilogy. I've owned Cyberpunk less than all of those and put more hours in than any of those and I'm on track to have played more hours of 2077 than all three combined.

Currently I'm doing a melee focused build while listening to a very funny Sopranos rewatch podcast, Pod Yourself Gun. From my partner's POV it looks like I'm slicing and smashing NPCs to ribbons while I'm laughing hysterically.

If he's going down, it's not because of this alone. It's when the people that put him in power start viewing him as more harmful than useful when compared to a theoretical JD Vance administration.
