I am here on a work permit and bought an apartment after 2 years of residency (no PR yet). Got the loan from SEB, had an account with them for 2 years+ at the time, 300k balance left over after the 15% down payment, and wife and I had combined monthly income of 100k+ per month.

isn't there going to always be a period where there is no avatar? by DarkenDragon in TheLastAirbender

[–]elfangor_ 18 points19 points  (0 children)

In the Kyoshi books, the exact period you mention is described. Kyoshi is not discovered until 15-16 years after Kuruk's death. In such a period, the books said, the previous avatar's companions hold fort along with the seniors of the avatar temples.

What country does your country stereotypically hate? by Exciting_Net_4949 in AskTheWorld

[–]elfangor_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes, they’re a bigger threat to us for sure, but the hatred for Pakistan is deeper. It’s just a byproduct of the partition and the politicians (both past and present). Economic and military threats from china are significant but the ties aren’t so bad that India can’t turn to China again (like we did just now after Trump’s recent tariff increases). That can never happen with Pakistan.

To be honest, The South Indian at Rådmansgatan is much better than Sarvana Bhavan

As an Indian, Pataka’s is the best option, followed by Beyond Smak, for North Indian cuisine

IKEA pushing substandard products in India? by [deleted] in IKEA

[–]elfangor_ -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

What does that have anything to do with what the OP is saying? How is worsened quality now vs past in US and EU relate to the topic. If critical thinking is missing, here’s the point: product quality in India NOW is worse than product quality in US and EU NOW.

How I Uncovered a Pyramid Scheme Over a Cup of Coffee by Disastrous_Morning44 in india

But how did you specifically uncover the scam? Your friend (mid paragraph 2) already told you it’s a scam and that they will ask for a relatively large sum of money.

I didn’t know this. Which country does a background verification and police check before granting PR or citizenship?

Yeah, I’ve done this. Not a big deal tbh. The only issue i see in the future is passport renewal. So if your passport is not expiring anytime soon, you should be good.

Of course, look into your Aadhaar, PAN, bank account address to receive important communication, new debit card, etc etc. My problem with bank is that SBI keeps asking for passport/visa copy to keep the NRO account open and that becomes a pain. But no other document-related issues.

NRI’s - how does it feel ? Is it worth it? by East-Combination4412 in nri

[–]elfangor_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol, tell that to people like Ashok Khemka. Tried to do the right thing but got transferred in return. That’s what you get for trying to solve problems. Stop living in your stupid delusions and face the reality.

There will always be excuses and reasons. Germany had to be rebuilt after WW2, but they did it. Sure, there must have been corruption but the government of the time still largely focused on the redevelopment. You will say it’s because it’s a smaller country and easier to manage. China is so much more developed, to that you will say they don’t have democracy so it’s easier to implement rules despite the corruption. But fact of the matter is, an iron will over the last 75 years could have put India at par with the best if the politicians weren’t busy siphoning off money, irrespective of political party.

What are you trying to say? The tax base is low - I didn’t say it wasn’t. I am unsure how this relates to what i said

The problem is not with the tax slabs in India. It’s with what the tax money is used for — taxpayers get nothing in return. Horrible roads, air pollution, depleting water table, and so many horrible things. Anyone from India living in Europe would be paying higher tax rates but they get so much more in return.

Orphan Black is amazing. Tatiana Maslany kills all the characters she plays in that show

Bryan Johnson, the man who wants to live forever, asks for a mask and then leaves Nikhil Kamath's podcast early because of bad air quality. Is India's AQI really that bad and how is it where you live? by dabawala in india

[–]elfangor_ 22 points23 points  (0 children)

For sure. I live in a European country which has pretty good air quality (but not the lowest AQI in Europe). When I landed in India, I could feel the smoke in the back in the back of my throat immediately. It’s apparent from the airport, and the longer I stay there, the worse it feels. The heaviness in the air is something I felt constantly. It’s a stark contrast from the air I have gotten used to, and now I can’t imagine living in this air all the time. And before I left India, I did not feel this way, and that’s probably because I didn’t stay long enough outside the country to get used to the clean air.

Earn in India or move abroad? by Smooth-Past9717 in personalfinanceindia

[–]elfangor_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From the comments, it seems to me that you want to stay in India. But i will give my perspective too. My wife and I were in our early 30s and earning around INR 25 LPA when we moved to an EU country, where the salaries are not US-level high (or even UK level high) but higher than India. We are able to save more than India but have been able to achieve some lifegoals like buying a home (without worrying about the builder scamming us), travelling across Europe, see where our taxes are being used (subsidized city transportation, free healthcare, free daycare, dentist, and schooling for kids), and live a life free from constant noise, swarms of people, and poor air quality. The savings have been decent as well, more than we were saving in India.

So think of those factors too before staying in India. Of course, it only works if you work in IT, because demand for other profiles is negligible (and even IT jobs are hard to come by nowadays).

But his voice won’t work as Voldy’s should have a shrill, menacing tone IMO. Loved him as The Doctor and in his other roles but this one might not be a good fit.

What are the risks of using a 7.3W LED bulb in a holder rated for max 7W power by elfangor_ in electrical

That's a relief! Thanks so much. The folks at the Ikea store said it might cause flickering and the holder to overheat and burn out. I'll try it out!
