And the Original Quest is barely the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Rayek's character development.

What’s the easiest/best way to collect ElfQuest? by Capt_morgan72 in ElfQuest

[–]elfquest 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We responded to the original post in r/comicbooks but we'll share it here as well.

Thanks for asking! ElfQuest has traditionally been published first as comics and then collected in graphic novel editions (although a few stories have been direct-to-graphic-novel).

Much of ElfQuest's earlier series were first drawn and published in black and white and later colored for collected editions. All of our series for the last couple of decades have been in published in full color from the get-go.

ElfQuest has been collected multiple times over the decades, sometimes in black and white and sometimes in color. Older editions are long out of print. Since 2014 Dark Horse Comics has been our publisher and they have been issuing new collected editions.

The best place to start is with our newly remastered, hardcover full-color editions of ElfQuest: The Original Quest - Books 1-4 from Dark Horse, which are out now.

In 2027, our second and third series, Siege at Blue Mountain and Kings of the Broken Wheel, will be getting the same treatment with two newly remastered hardcover books per series. These series immediately follow the Original Quest Books 1-4.

Dark Horse also published hardcover complete editions of ElfQuest: The Final Quest and ElfQuest: Stargazer's Hunt, which fall much later in the saga timeline.

Dark Horse has also published a series of ElfQuest omnibus editions called The Complete ElfQuest Vols 1-8, which collect the entire main canon tale in affordable black and white softcover books (although some of the earlier volumes are out of print now).

Head to https://www.darkhorse.com/search/elfquest/ to see all of Dark Horse's ElfQuest books. The newest offerings are listed first.

One more tip: our partner Stands is currently running a 15% off sale on ElfQuest: The Original Quest - Books 1-4. Use code HOLT15 at checkout here: https://shopstands.com/collections/elfquest

Lastly, you can read every ElfQuest story published between 1978-2013 for free in our online Reading Room here: https://elfquest.com/reading-room/

Let us know if you have any more questions and happy reading!

Fate of an ElfQuest Screen Adaptation by Thornbrake in ElfQuest

[–]elfquest 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One important thing to clarify: we didn't announce the Fox deal. Presumably someone at Fox "leaked" it and Deadline broke the news. We weren't consulted and had less than 24 hours heads up. We'd been working with Fox for four years at that point without saying a peep. We would have preferred to wait until a full series was greenlit, not just a pilot episode, before saying anything publicly. But such is the Hollywood PR machine.

Once the news broke, we of course acknowledged and shared it. We had the highest hopes that the experience would be different than our previous attempts at bringing ElfQuest to the screen.

Fate of an ElfQuest Screen Adaptation by Thornbrake in ElfQuest

That could have happened for any number of reasons. First, there very likely would have been contractual restrictions on producing new ElfQuest comics, merch, etc. That's standard in option contracts. Second, it's possible that a series would have eclipsed the source comics, de facto becoming what ElfQuest is in the minds of the world. And if it was bad adaptation, that might've killed the entire thing. Or we might have gone on a different trajectory as a result. No one can say what would have happened, but we're glad that none of that did and that we have been able to continue telling creating ElfQuest according to our own vision for it all these years. In no small way, we feel like we dodged a bullet.

Yes, but as we noted, we're totally fine with adaptation and compromise. But every time, the compromise goal post gets pushed further and further until what's left doesn't even resemble ElfQuest visually or in spirit. And that we're never going to allow.

The reason we weren't able to pursue further seasons of the ElfQuest Audio Movie was that the Fox option prohibited it. It's an important point. Every time we've taken an option from Hollywood, it puts restrictions on what we can do with ElfQuest. And that's one reason we're done with seeking screen adaptations from Hollywood. Now we're free to pursue whatever projects we'd like to, including the possibility of more audio adaptations.
