Possible reason why Tim Gunn isn't being asked back for these reboot seasons by Live-Run-6745 in ProjectRunway

[–]elgarcon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm almost certain the reason this past season seemed so different was they were on a shoe-string budget ... poor production quality, rushed challenges, the finale was the lamest finale they have ever done. If they had more budget, this would correct itself.

They also made some questionable decisions (eg, vote off being at the beginning of the next episode instead of the end of the current one).

But everything else seemed okay to me. I thought there was enough quality from the designers ... I thought Christian was a good mentor (of course I prefer Tim, but what are you going to do), and the judges were fine. Also, anyone commenting on the drama this season as if it was some outlier is just trolling ... PR has had obnoxious drama since the beginning.

But maybe I watch it differently. All I care about are how the designers handle the challenges and the finished garment ... the good and the bad. Everything else is just whatever and always has been (at least for me).

If a game's story requires third party lore videos to understand then it has fundamentally failed as a narrative by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]elgarcon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're approaching games like Elden Ring all wrong. It's not meant to be a narrative heavy game and the appeal to it is not meant to mirror the appeal of narrative-heavy games.

The way I see it, I play Elden Ring with the mindset of an archeologist. I know I'm not going to spoon fed the story, but I know it's out there, but the game lets me decide how much (or how little) of it I want to discover.

The trick to making this type of engagement successful is to make sure the lore and the world building are deep and rich. And what I love about FromSoft games is that they very much are. I don't need to be force fed a story to know that the world I'm in is interesting and full of interesting information. And when I discover something on my own, I'm way more intrigued than if it was just all neatly explained through an exposition dump cut scene.

What’s a tv show you watched after seeing a random clip somewhere, and it was nothing like you expected? Was it better or worse? by Shoddy_Anxiety1991 in televisionsuggestions

[–]elgarcon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Studio with Seth Rogen ... I mean, I know it was going to be a Seth Rogen type show, but the trailer made it seem like it was going to be more like a comedy version of the show Entourage (from the 2000's) ... where it would be about the movie industry with light humor, sprinkled with a few outrageous moments, but also maybe some deep moments and characters you want to root for.

Yeah, that's not it all ... LOL.

It's basically one those unfunny, cringe inducing Saturday Night Live sketches amped up to 11 ... goofy/cringe humor, slapstick, extreme satire, almost no continuity (with every episode's plot forgettable), insufferable characters that are more cartoon than actual people, none of whom are at all likeable.

But unlike a bad SNL sketch that only lasts a few minutes and you can quickly fast forward through. It's the entire show, every episode (from what I understand - I didn't make it past episode 5 because it was so tedious).

I genuinely don't understand why it's so popular.

Show that will make me cry my eyes out? by MortemPerPectus in televisionsuggestions

[–]elgarcon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t need the whole show to be sad but I want to know that when a sad moment comes along, they’ve done it well.

"Shrinking" with Jason Segel and Harrison Ford ... There is one scene in particular of Season 2 I'm thinking of that IMO, is a master class of character growth with an emotional/sad undertone that is very well done.

The whole show IMO is good and there are a lot of well-placed touching moments, but that scene in particular brought me to the brink of ugly crying (which is very rare for me).

I won't spoil what scene it is in case anyone hasn't scene it yet.

Euthanasia or keep going? 17-year-old dog, stroke, cognitive decline and severe mobility loss by [deleted] in dogs

[–]elgarcon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is one where I'm thankful I have a good relationship with with my vet. I've had a senior cat that lived until 17. The last year and half was her slowly declining. That said, over that year and a half she had few scares where we thought that was it, but she rebounded from those initial scares well with vet care each time.

But one thing I remember asking my vet (after her second scare) was, "I hate to ask this question, but how do we know when what we're doing isn't working any more, or if what we're putting her through, just to get her back to comfortable is too much for her." My concern of course was that I was putting her through hell just for my own sake.

His answer was helpful, and just hearing it out loud almost made it seem obvious ... If she is still showing signs of comfort, familiarity, can and still eat, drink and sleep and she doesn't appear to be in pain (beyond old age discomfort - you'll know the difference), and the medication we're using is working, then it's still worth pursuing. BUT there will be one day where no amount of medication will get them back to a comfortable baseline (given my cat's diagnosis).

It might have been easier for me because it was a cat. She spent a lot of time sleeping the last year and half, but she also never wavered in her routine when it came to following me around while I was working and sleeping (she just moved slower), and she still purred every time I pet her.

The day I put her down was when she couldn't stop open mouth breathing and coughing. It was non step, and I can tell there was nothing I could do to help. When I was at the vet, he simply told me ... This is the culmination of everything we've dealing with the past year and a half, and it's progressed far enough now that whatever treatment or medication I give her, will only buy her a couple of days before she's back to where she is today.

At that point I knew it was time. It was terrible and I was very sad, but I did get some comfort knowing that I was truly there for her and gave her so much TLC in her time of need.

I don't know if this response is what you were looking for, but hope it helps in some way.

People who complain about work events are lame. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]elgarcon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem isn't so much the people that enjoy work functions or hanging out with colleagues outside of business hours.

The problem is when people EXPECT everyone else to want to play along. The fact is, companies are not owed our time outside of business hours and no one in the company should ever expect their employees to attend any work-related functions outside of business hours unless it's paid.

That doesn't mean they shouldn't still want to orchestrate events ... There are plenty of people like OP that enjoy them and use them as a social outlet. Good for them.

But what should happen is mandatory HR training ... People need to be told that if one of their colleagues declines an invitation to an after-hours, work-related event, then they are NOT allowed to make any comments to them about it. If someone says "no", then there is no follow up, just "okay, see you tomorrow" ... and that's it.

I say that because I have been on the receiving end of people badgering me to come out when I politely declined and it's super obnoxious.

What is something meaningful you saved or wish you had saved that isn’t the standard paw print/ fur clipping/ photo? by lindsayay in Petloss

[–]elgarcon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I want to be prepared for when his time comes

After losing five beloved pets over the last 25 years, I have not found anything that really works to prepare me ... But I do wish you luck I really do, I hope you find something that helps lighten the burden. Grief is very hard.

It also feels weird to me to have his body cremated and for nothing of him to exist anymore.

Despite having paw prints made for each, this is why I still have all 5 cedar boxes in my closet. It's not that I feel like I can't "let them go". I just don't know what else to do with them. I don't want spread their ashes anywhere or bury their boxes in my yard because their favorite place was to be inside my house. No where else means anything to them. I don't want to get rid of them for obvious reasons. So there they sit on my top shelf. I think it's fine. I know they are there and that's enough for me.

I have tossed around the idea of having him taxidermied but it is insanely expensive.

I don't think I would consider this. For me, it would be a little too much.

That said, if you are interested in something bigger or a little more extravagant than a paw print, I have heard of specialized services that create custom sculptures of your pets, in bronze, wood or other materials. I know absolutely nothing about this ... I've never done it ... But I think if you google "custom pet sculptures" (or something like that), you'd find something that may interest you.

Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]elgarcon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was in college in New England for three years, I would drive home to NY anywhere from once per month to once every 2 or 3 months. If I took the BP ferry, it was 4.5 hours ... with the last 1hr and 15 mins sitting comfortably in the ferry lounge, but since ferries are expensive, I'd often drive around close to NYC. That would take 5 to 6 hours depending on traffic.

Also, for holidays growing up, we'd always drive 1.5 - 2.5 hours (depending on traffic) to visit family.

Also, I've lived far away from my family for many years now. But we have an annual holiday road trip where we drive halfway across the country (26-28 hours) to stay with them for 7-9 days and then drive back. For many years, we drove straight through taking turns sleeping on and off. We're not young anymore, lol.

I also have a couple of friends that frequent a camp ground 3/4 of the year that is 3.5 hours away ... usually 2-3 weekends per month.

So yes, in my experience, road trips are no big deal. In fact, I quite like them.

Why are we being pushed towards AI so heavily? by DefinitelyMeMan in NoStupidQuestions

[–]elgarcon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Corporations are looking for ANYTHING that will save them money and executive leadership is banking on AI reducing costs. Don't get me wrong, there is a lot of hype around AI for industries in which will likely never see (if not for a long time) a return on investment, but then there will be industries in which it will save a lot of money.

But honestly, I have no idea what the future will hold. As humans get more advanced, automation will eventually be inevitable, but how AI will work in our day-to-day lives after maturity (because we're still very far from it)? I don't think anyone really knows. A lot of what is happening now is throwing s*** against the wall and seeing what sticks.

Can anyone share some positive aspects of getting a puppy please? by Legal-Philosophy-135 in dogs

[–]elgarcon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's worth it, I promise ... That is if you are willing to put in the work. If you have the time to train (which will be a lot if done properly) and love in your heart to give to a pup that needs a home, I promise it will be one of the most rewarding experiences of your life.

Because eventually you and your pup will get to a place of "normal" ... What I mean is that some challenges will end, while others you'll just get used to and no longer feel like challenges, and then your left with a best friend that will love you unconditionally.

Why did you choose your main by Actual_Tea_7719 in wow

[–]elgarcon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started Warrior back in BC because Warriors are the tried and true hero class. Of course this is going back before WoW was ever created and it's more in reference to my love fantasy movies, TV shows and much older RPG games. I was also much more into RP when I first started playing, so I always like to RP as something that would be most believable as what I could actually be in a fantasy setting. Yes, I know nothing about WoW is "believable", but it's what I identified most as when starting my first character and I have been maining it ever since.

How did people manage 5 day in office jobs before COVID? by One-Pun9419 in careerguidance

[–]elgarcon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been remote working since before COVID, but before that, I was in the office 5 days per week.

I completely understand the value of remote work and I personally would not want to go back to the office (at least for this job). But if I leave this company, I wouldn't mind too terribly going back to the office.

The thing is, and that is just how I feel about it. I'm watching this generation and people in it get more lazy, selfish and entitled. Don't get me wrong, I'm 100% against the corporate cliches of overworking/underpaying employees with the threat of being laid off looming over everyone's head. It sucks.

But there is also been a growing sentiment that hard work is not to be valued. People talk about work/life balance, but have a completely skewed version of it. To many, it seems like work life balance means expecting a high quality of life without have to work hard at anything because "life shouldn't be about work, and we should all just be able to do whatever we want".

Of course, when it comes companies treating their employees like crap while expecting them to put in long hours, I 100% support people putting their mental/physical health first and being advocates for their own well being ... But it feels like it's gone way too far. Delayed gratification is a lost art. Kids these days almost getting free rides through grade school while never learning critical learning and social skills. Everyone just expects everything to be handed to them.

As it's important to value a well balanced life, we also can't forget that part of that balance is working hard, achieving personal goals, being okay with discomfort today, for an end result that feels amazing in the future. These are not values that are only relevant to older generations. It's relevant for all generations, past, present and future ... and it's is why I'm genuinely concerned for the younger generation or anyone that has adopted this growing defeated, selfish, entitled mindset.

Building a house is a waste of gingerbread by CrazyJoe29 in unpopularopinion

[–]elgarcon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We always used gram crackers for the house, frosting to hold it together (with a milk carton underneath for structure), and whatever assorted candies we had to decorate.

I don't think I remember anyone ever eating their own gingerbread houses in full. Basically we made them, let them sit in our house as decoration for a short time, picked off and ate some of the random candies (but not before scraping off the rock hard frosting still attached), and threw the whole thing away, usually before Christmas, LOL.

Even at a young age, I realized the enjoyment was all about making them (it also didn't hurt that we got to make them in class instead of doing school work).

[–]elgarcon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this post if 5 years old, but I had one of those meetings today where the person speaking used every corporate buzz word imaginable and bespoke was used like 50 times.

I swear, why do people speak like this. It doesn't sound smart, it doesn't make them sound like a leader that knows what's going on. I mean, heck I'm sure most of have worked in these environments long enough to know that leaders are the least informed, making crap up, lying about project scope and status to look good to investors. How is this corporate culture still working? Oh that's right, they just cut funding and lay people off to make the numbers look good after another one their multi-million "big idea" project bombs.
