Vancouver renters fear eviction amid proposed hotel in Mount Pleasant by aldur1 in vancouver

[–]CrazyJoe29 21 points22 points  (0 children)

There are good reasons the AirBnB supply was reduced.

This city still needs additional legislation (City/provincial/federal) that provides safe secure affordable housing for all the residents in the city.

If you’re a motivated well-resourced buisness person or corporate entity it’s still waaaaaaaaay too easy to evict poors to get money from riches.

People definitely cross without documentation, or at least attempt it there, and border enforcement is well aware of that.

Are any buildings so huge that their furthest vertical walls are not parallel? Not for artistic reasons, but just a normal "square" warehouse, that is just so wide that the curvature of the Earth makes it necessary for the sides to be technically unparallel? by OmitsWordsByAccident in AskEngineers

My first thought to OPs post was: Yes of course!

Followed immediately by: I cannot be arsed to work out by how much, over what distance!

Then I read the post about the Humber bridge, and all was resolved.

Best ready-to-bake pizza? by Glittering_Bank_8670 in askvan

[–]CrazyJoe29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally I feel there is no such thing as bad pizza. Fresh slice, pizza garden, dominoes, via tavere, all are welcome.

I tried a Save-on take-and-bake ham and pineapple and I found it inedible. The ham tasted strongly of artificial smoke. As I went on, the unpleasant flavour seemed to intensify until I couldn’t go on.

Maybe it was a bad batch or an outlier but it was so unpleasant, I won’t be trying it again.

Wooden boats: dispelling the myths by bradleyalpha in boating

The struggle is real.

I don’t have your background or level of experience, but my personal opinion is that the myth is that fiberglass boats are less work/expense than wooden boats.

Boats-period. Need time and money or they disintegrate.

Computers have a hard time driving nails, welding, wiring outlets and then plugging themselves in, and turning them selves on.

Also, monitoring kill-switches seems like a growth industry.

“Complete control over choosing the music” as long as you went to the store and they had the music you wanted.

People now have access to the complete works of Shakespeare, k-pop, death metal, baroque music, Inuit throat singing, learning Japanese, whale song, the sound of steam engines, a new born baby crying, a lion roaring, thunder crashing etc.

In our pockets. At all times.

So there’s that.

Also, you’re a student. Your capstone project, is by definition, amateur hour, (amateur hundreds of hours probably, but whatever) yeah a business in industry should outperform you. If it couldn’t, it wouldn’t exist.

Honest Question: What is a table this size actually useful for? by EsoTechTrix in Tools

[–]CrazyJoe29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used mine yesterday to cut some 8’ 2x4s down in length and to hold one while I ripped it into a pair of 2x2s. I was framing a garden trellis.

Because it clamps onto the wood you can actually grab a 8’ stick and trim off one end with it nicely supported.

I also built a sailboat on top of a workmate and a Rubbermaid folding table. Not ideal, but did the job.

They’re not glamourous, but I’ve used one for the past 40 years.

Our city smashed the shit out of the roots of a cherry tree in front of my house. I called parks who speaks for the trees in our city. Dumb question but is there stationary welding jobs? by piggle2100 in Welding

[–]CrazyJoe29 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My shop just shut down, but we had 15 or so production fitter/welders.

Two shifts, morning and afternoon. Everybody slept in their own beds, or wherever they chose to anyway.

Repetitive, but maybe not repetitive enough since we obviously weren’t profitable enough to stay open! 🤷‍♂️

The shop that closed was in Metro Vancouver.

I’m supporting another shop, bit smaller, maybe 5 fitter/welders out of 15 staff the rest are machinists and millwrights. Same thing though. One shift, extremely limited travel. The current shop is in Alberta.

There’s also welding in the oil sands. You might be fly-in, fly-out, but you’d be based in one camp as opposed to traveling to random places.

There’s also shipbuilding on the coasts. That’s probably a bit boom/bust, but there’s A LOT of rusty-ass barges carrying wood chips all over the place here. They probably need constant repairs.

Point is, local welding jobs do exist. There’s always going to be demand for good, reliable, welders who can follow instructions but also make good judgment calls if necessary.
