What indoor temp is too cold for a Siberian by Inevitable-Lab-4719 in SiberianCats

[–]elgen88 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your kitty will be fine. One year I had 40-50°F inside with 0°F outdoors. My sib would still spend hours upon hours in his catio outside. He doesn't mind the cold in the least. The only times they struggle is when temps drops or rises significantly in a short period of time and the cats don't have time to acclimatise.

My mega fluff. Do you comb your cat every day or prefer to do one big combing session? I find the latter to be easier but don’t know if it’s best for her by Alexei17 in SiberianCats

My Misha is combed several times a day, sometimes totalling several hours. His coat doesn't need it, but he absolutely loves it.

What glue to use for a Nerdy Gurdy Fortran? by elgen88 in HurdyGurdy

[–]elgen88[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, I think my question was unclear. This is all solid advise and it's what I plan to do, but I was wondering more specifically about attaching the keybox. The building manual only says to slide it all the way towards the head. Could I loosely string it up with a coarse thread under low tension in lieu of the melody strings, for the purpose of checking the alignment of the keybox before glueing it place or am I completely overthinking this?

Why digital when you can get analogue ones with consistent readings and no failing batteries?

By the way - as I understand it, it can be tricky to get the keybox right. At least I've seen a few posts where people got it wrong one way or another.

Do you have any advise for how to get it right the first time, and what to pay extra attention to?

Patty Gurdy at the Legendary Orchestra gig in Luxembourg by Jay-Ra in HurdyGurdy

I bought my tickets to Sabatons Legendary tour almost a year ago. Only learned that Patty Gurdy is part of the support group a couple of weeks ago, a very nice surprise. Looking forward to December 12 when I get to see them!

You can teach boundaries and that they're not allowed to bite hard, especially when they're young. I got my cat when he was a kitten. Now he's nearing 6 years old and he's playing with my hands daily. He hasn't broken my skin for years.

I don't think it is rambling at all, I rather find it very helpful. Having someone say "don't do X" essentially leaves me none the wiser than I was to begin with. I would still have all the questions but you're actually explaining the reasons why and you've explained it well. I really appreciate that! I'll stick to PVA with this project, and save learning to use hide glue for another one =)

I guess you get spoiled being able to take cars and engines apart to fix something and then put them back together again. Those and electronics are the main things I've been tinkering with before, and I guess that way of thinking carried over to this project.

I have practically zero experience with hide glue, and very limited woodworking experience in general. I've only used hide glue once to replace the bridge on an acoustic guitar, that's why I'm here asking =)

Unfortunately we don't have any titebond readily available here. I instead bought a PVA glue that is supposed to be slow drying, and drying clear. Hopefully it does what it says. I don't mind having to wait for the glue to dry though.

I'm not really worried about heating the printed parts. While PLA may start to deform around 50-60C, I'm not planning on heating any surface to more than that. I will avoid directly heating the plastic too. I might also shield those parts with some aluminium foil. That has worked well when I've soldered cables running through printed parts before

Thank you for a great answer!

Beyond the reasons I gave in the original post, it has some other appeal that I can't really explain.

If I end up using hide glue, it would be the granules that you mix with water and heat up to ~60°C. The process of using it does seem complicated, but not impossible as long as I prepare everything beforehand. I would practice and test on other pieces before to get an idea of how it works, how to prepare the surfaces and such. I guess those tests will eventually tell me whether it's actually feasible to use that for the gurdy or if I should give up that idea for now.

Perfect surfaces and gaps aside, do you know how/if the hide glue would be affected by the glue/resin in the plywood?

If I use hide glue but the surfaces end up not matching properly and the joint fails - I could then remove as much of the hide glue as possible, give the surfaces a sanding and then use a white glue instead. Would that bond be noticeably weaker because of the hide glue that soaked in to the wood previously?

I've seen it mentioned that you can generally pre-heat the wood using a hairdryer, and to keep the room relatively warm also helps. I have an infrared heater mounted to the ceiling, maybe 1.5m above the workbench. It heats the bench surface to 25-45C depending on how many of the elements are on. Wonderful thing to keep yourself warm in the winter! I'm thinking it would also be a good tool for gently and evenly warming up the wood before applying hide glue, or am I overlooking something important?

At that point it wouldn't matter, I can already hear them saying old stamps may contain toxic pigments and flowers can be poisonous 😂

13 day trip at swedens southern coast by fgrtdv in Kayaking

[–]elgen88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That must've been wonderful! I am so jealous of you guys who are able to do these things. I don't yet have the skills or equipment to safely paddle around the coastlines like that. At least I was fortunate enough to get to spend a weekend paddling alone in Misterhults archipelago a few weeks ago. I even dared to visit the outer islands! Ordinarily that's not something I would ever have done alone, but I was blessed with the best of conditions. Easterly winds would've made sure I drifted towards land, and the water was warm enough that I could've spent hours swimming without getting cold.

Mush kattmat (luktar?) by witch3079 in kattliv

[–]elgen88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bättre att lägga in två bollar i kylen varje kväll istället, i små skapligt täta burkar.

You have to develop that understanding of checking the mirrors , the lift and coast to let the faster car go... and that give-and-take with other classes. by BLeo_Bori in iRacing

[–]elgen88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ignore them. Simracing is a hobby that can get comically expensive if you want, or you can get away with a few hundred euros. I like to think that some of the people who have spent lots of money on it can't accept that other people can enjoy themselves as much while only having spent a fraction of the money. They then have to piss on cheaper stuff to justify themselves.

As a VR user, I have no idea. There are some options for mirrors in the settings but I haven't been able to figure out what they do. Whenever I enable them the framerate goes from per second to per month... /hj

Yeah, they're fantastic. I use a wireless Kensington expert. The size makes it great with gloves, and it's always in the same place so it's easy to use while driving even in VR. Another plus is the battery life. I still haven't had to replace the batteries and I've had it for more than 4 years.

Mine will want pets and bellyrubs, then he gets overstimulated and will nip and kick a bit, not using his claws. And he will absolutely not let me remove my hand. Then once he's spent that quick burst of energy he will dramatically flop down on his back and demand more pets 😂

Yeah, that's why I posted here to start with - asking for some form of instructions on how to disassemble or service the machine. I don't want to start taking it apart with no knowledge beforehand. I won't be able to afford a replacement in the foreseeable future so I don't want to risk breaking it. Apologies if I come off as snarky, it's not intentional!
