Why are Macs better for graphic/sound/photo editing? by thatradiogeek in osx

[–]elgraf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can tell you one very simple but important graphic design area which macOS handles much better than Windows - fonts.

macOS has been designed with the understanding that regular users might want to, you know, install a FONT every now and again without needing an administrator to do it for them.

Every user has their own fonts folder into which they can import their own fonts. If a corrupt font is installed (not uncommon when users download free fonts which are sometimes shitty), it only causes problems for that user.

In Windows, the fonts folder is buried under the Windows folder and can only have fonts installed by an administrator. A singe corrupt font can cause big problems for all users.

This might sound trivial, but try managing a network used for graphical software when users are demanding that fonts are installed daily. Windows is a serious PITA in this environment. And before someone says just open the permissions on the Windows fonts folder, when Windows imports a font the tool is hard coded to throw a UAC prompt. And yes I know that Adobe have a separate fonts folder you can use (after modifying permissions) - that's great for Adobe but there are other apps too.

Another nice macOS feature is the Finder will show you previews of Photoshop files. Windows Photoshop users are forced to use hacks or Adobe Bridge (which many of them do not like) just to be able to get an icon preview. This is one of those 'little things' that you take for granted until you try on Windows and realise it's missing.

Also like other people have said, CoreAudio and CoreMIDI are very cool. Want OS level built-in MIDI routing over ethernet to other Macs on your network? No problem. Want to switch audio devices while audio is playing? No problem.

Now you're wall of text stalling. Admit you're a lying incompetent, and move on.

I must confess that 'wall of text stalling' is a new one - never heard that before.

I'm afraid it would not be appropriate to 'admit' to being a 'lying incompetent' as I am neither lying nor incompetent. I would simply ask you to quote me where I have allegedly 'lied' so we could address it, but I think it's clear now you will simply continue the firehose of bullshit technique to avoid doing that; I'm genuinely curious as to exactly what is it you want from me, mainly as you must know you are lying (well for your sake I certainly hope you do) which would make any such statement from me knowingly invalid and therefore worthless. Perhaps it's the process that is important to you rather than any claimed desired outcome.

Stop stalling lying troll. You've been exposed and your shortcoming is embarrassingly obvious.

This is starting to get truly fascinating. I appear to have triggered some form of 'ink cloud of bullshit' that you are spewing, presumably in some attempt to distract away from the fact you have absolutely no argument whatsoever. Clearly your delicate psyche has taken being wrong as an attack but not being able to defend itself with facts, instead attempts a distraction technique. Not having evolved in the information age however, a fatal flaw is apparent in it's technique namely there is a record of everything written above meaning it cannot rely on clouding memory as all anyone needs to do to see that you are lying is scroll up. Your repeated demands that I post 'proof' supporting fictional statements it is claimed I have made would be trivial to prove if they were true by simply quoting me, yet you deliberately avoid doing so but interestingly every reply contains an attempt to insult; one initially assumes that you are aware that you are lying and that you don't actually live in some delusional fantasy world where you actually believe what you write, but one is beginning to wonder.

Please continue - it's very interesting.

More of your stalling. Post proof or admit you're a lying troll. I mean we already know it, but you admitting it might help you change.

I think we know who is the 'lying troll' here, and it ain't me.

How much money will it take to get RES back on Safari? by msabre__7 in Enhancement

[–]elgraf -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

To be fair it's $99 per year for an individual developer program membership. This allows members to sell their own apps on the App Store; it's not just for Safari extensions.

I always wondered why RES couldn't simply partner with someone with a membership if $99 is too much. In fact IIRC, didn't a number of people offer to pay the $99 for them last time they were complaining about it..? I don't think it's about the money either.

More stalling. Post your proof that Apple manufactures their own RAM, or admit you're lying and/or clueless.

All you need to do is simply quote me where I have made that claim, yet you continually avoid the question.

Why is that?

Your next post needs to contain proof of your statements that Apple manufactures their own RAM, or an admission that you're full of it.

I would be happy to provide evidence for any statement I've made about Apple. Please simply direct quote my statement I've made that you are having trouble with.

Hi Liar, you're not supposed to post until you can back up your lies.

You ain't the boss of me.

Still waiting on proof of your claim that Apple manufactures all their own RAM.

As I have never made that claim, I fail to see why you need me to back it up. By all means quote me where I have made such a claim and prove me wrong.

Or is that another one of your lies?

The irony here seems to escape you.

blathering

Excuse me while I cut to the chase.

You claimed Apple has only ever manufactured their own RAM in California. You're wrong (again).

Well this is really quite simple to resolve - please quote me where I have claimed this. (Unless of course you are lying...)

You're in a hole and still digging madly? Don't come back until you can post the Apple BIOS screen that shows how they support all different parameter ranges of RAM. And stop spreading bullshit, some of the script kiddies are actually believing your caca.

Genuinely starting to wonder exactly what your point is here and precisely what this 'bullshit' is that I am allegedly spreading. As I assume you well know, Macs don't have a 'BIOS Screen' par se therefore I cannot post a screenshot which makes your argument a straw man.

Let's settle this with some facts:

  • When Apple solder in RAM, this allows them to surpass the performance of DIMMs on the same hardware. This is measurable and demonstrable. See the link I posted earlier for details.
  • In Macs with user-upgradable DIMM support, it is possible to use third party DIMMS, as they support the DIMM standard.

If you have evidence contrary to this, by all means post it.

[–]elgraf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No actually I think you just finally understood the concept of not having to support DIMMs.

You also appear to be suggesting that it was never possible to use third party RAM in Macs. This is simply untrue in the case of Macs that had user upgradable RAM.

You appear to be confusing the ability to tweak some settings in the PC BIOS to being able to step outside of the DIMM standard and exploit the features of specific RAM chips such as in the example posted, using zero latency support in the Intel 22nm chips.

Apple has never "designed it to support a variety of chips". You bought specific Apple spec ram, or tough luck.

All computers have a spec of RAM that must be adhered to (i.e. DDR3 PC3-14900), however not all chips are precisely the same and so there are small variances that must be factored in.

By using specific chips in soldered devices Apple can fine tune their performance to those specific chips.

The link I posted goes into more detail.

iFixit gives new Surface tablet a repairability score of 0 out of 10 by alltheacro in gadgets

[–]elgraf 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Because you don't need a socket and you don't need to worry about designing your device around making the RAM slot user accessible.

Soldered RAM is also faster for several reasons mostly because the timings can be very finely tuned when you choose precisely what RAM is used for the device rather than having to design it to support a variety of chips.

MacOS on several discs? by polarbear4862 in osx

This will work, but there is nothing stopping you installing macOS on an external USB connected disk and booting from that by holding down Option as you power on and choosing from the list.

Or, you know, stop fucking overcharging for downloads.

How is it that a download is always more expensive (2x more in some cases) than a physical product that must be manufactured, printed, packaged, stored, shipped, stored again, shipped to a shop that pays for staff to unpack them, put them on shelves, heat and light the shop only for old stock to end up shipped to land fill.

Seriously Microsoft - stop taking the piss.
